In the 11jun15 sandbox a left-leaning reader pointed out the recent speech (here) of a California conservative assemblywoman who believes that God has intervened to bring drought upon our land as a corrective to punish us for our legalized practice of infanticide and abortions.  Another similarly leaning reader weighed in with his opinion that such expressions by Republican politicians will drive away the independent and undecided voters from Republican ranks.  How curious?

Apparently Democrats do not suffer from such interpretations and utterances by their politicians.  The long record of RR is overflowing with examples of one-sided blindness by our progressive commenters who send their fabled CCC (Collectivist Cricket Corps) to respond when they are reminded of leftwing politicians who think Pacific islands will tip over if over populated on one side or the other.  These extremes are daily joined by others of their ilk proposing patently insane social and economic policies that have never worked and cannot work because they fundamentally misinterpret human nature.  Yet when these are pointed out, not only in advance but also in their aftermath, our neighbors of the socialist tinge again respond through the good auspices of their CCC.  It is as if they are absolutely blind to the impact of their own nostrums, potions, and lotions which they hawk and apply to our body politic.

In contrast, the assemblywoman gave a perfectly plausible causal explanation in the context of her belief system, a belief system the verity of which science cannot disprove no matter the level of sneerage bestowed upon it from the secular humanist Left.  It was nobelist Richard Feynman who made that strong assertion years ago (here).  However, disproving the perennial prescriptions of progressives is a pursuit readily handled by middle-schoolers not yet cognitively castrated by public education.  No matter, the progressives go forward in their pursuit of elitist governance bestowed on democratic masses as if they had a solid record of accomplishments in their public policies portfolio.  We recall that Einstein perfectly labeled such dedicated repetitions perennially bereft of anticipated results.  And once more, they send the CCC into the breach.

The sad part of this tale is that such a liberal mind is now shared by an ever larger cohort of Americans during the new ‘post-intellectual’ age (e.g. Post-intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy, D.N. Wood, 1996).  The progressive elitists have created a perfect voting class that has little knowledge of how things work and even less of the world around them.  The dilemma of such a successful strategy is that the same class of the clueless are more and more difficult to employ with each succeeding year.  Then who will be the ‘other people’ whose money socialism requires to run its brave new world?

If someone makes a buck off prison labor, it’s fine by me. ( don’t like it? though… Don’t do a crime that get’s you sent there.) There have been plenty in the news lately that are not in jail that should be.

I think what really annoys those that don’t like programs like A.C.E. is that the children that are in this program are more literate and productive when they are adults. And it doesn’t cost the tax payers a dime. If I had only the choice of a govt school or A.C.E. for my child, I wouldn’t hesitate to go with A.C.E.

Actually Patricia I am in favor of “chain gangs” being reconstituted in America. Since it costs the taxpayers on average about $54,000 a year to incarcerate these lovelies, why not get something back? So, as far as the “slavery” claim, it is not slavery if the are being paid. At least they generate something beneficial for society.
The Salon article is by a liberal atheist I am sure and so why should we care? It is the same when liberals tell us conservatives how we should be to get votes. Why would they do that? They want to lose? Jeeze liberals are as dumb as a post.
Regarding Trump, what is the problem you libs have with him? You say he is all those goofy things and he can never be President so why the vitriol about someone? Maybe you actually fear his candid musings? That would be my guess, along with the usual liberal jealousies of a self mad man. That pollutes the liberal narrative when there is a very successful capitalist. You libs are so transparent, and I want to thank you for that. LOL!

Todd, chain gangs? First you demand I prove my statement about prisoners working for 30 cents an hour*, then when I do, you decide you are OK with the policy. You have failed to address any of the points I made. The money isn’t going to the State from the goods these prisoners manufacture. They are going into the pockets of private companies while taxpayers pick up the expenses for housing them.
I have to laugh at your assumption that the author of the article is a liberal atheist. Even if that were so (and you have no imformation to support your claim), would that change the facts? You are so biased!
Since prisoners are making so many military items for private companies (for pennies), wouldn’t it be interesting to see how much they are charging the military for these things? I somehow doubt they are passing the savings on to the gov’t.
    * Turns out I was wrong, It’s 25 cents an hour, not 30.

PatriciaS 245pm – while not an expert on the commercial use of prison labor, I am aware of a couple of states’ programs (e.g. Florida). And none of those allow the capitalist to walk away with labor costs so low that the prisoners’ upkeep is not covered. For example, the manufacturer will pay the state $7/hr while the state pays the prisoner $0.50/hr, keeping the rest to cover the costs of incarceration. Do you have evidence to the contrary?

I think the >25 cents an hour is way too much money for incarcerated people. I think we need to utilize more prisoners in the labor pools for many things. All this angst about murderers, rapists and molesters having to do some labor is hilarious! Hell, a murderer can kill twenty people, dismember them, eat them and get LIFE!. Three square and a roof, medical care and a friggin law library. No Patricia, we need to get tougher on these scofflaws and don’t get our panties in a wad about their “labor” expenditures. $54,000 a year for each prisoner should be spent on the overpass at Dorsey, not the transgender operation of some murderous fool.
Chain ganfs sure would get some attention wouldn’t they?

    George R, today, 3:19
What you are missing is that it is private companies not the state that are profiting from this arrangement. We taxpayers foot the bill to guarantee the beds are filled in these private prisons. We have to pay even when the population falls below a certain percentage (usually between 90 – 99%) which of course is not the case in state-run prisons. These companies pay the prisoners 30 cents a hour (the rates vary) and they pocket the profits when they sell the goods.
I still want to know how much the military is being billed for the items produced by prisoners. And Walt, I don’t condone Starbucks or Victoria’s Secrets using this cheap labor, but it is taxpayer dollars that are used to buy their goods which is why I picked on the industrial military complex.

If the family wants to live in a shack while they save their own money, they can.

The evidence I would have enjoyed was a link to some report that had been researched with data from such relationships. But for now, let’s just take your statements at face value.
Since the state arranged with private prison corporations to incarcerate prisoners, and since working prisoners is not against the law (state prisons have done it for centuries and continue to do so today), then what you are complaining about is a financial arrangement between two private enterprises that involves the lawful use of prison labor. As a leftist, you naturally will attack the private enterprises and accuse them of not meeting your arbitrary standards of fairness and social justice. However, if you don’t like what private prisons are doing, don’t you think that the proper targets of your wrath should be the governments that contract with them? Perhaps I’m asking too much from a liberal mind.
