In the 11jun15 sandbox a left-leaning reader pointed out the recent speech (here) of a California conservative assemblywoman who believes that God has intervened to bring drought upon our land as a corrective to punish us for our legalized practice of infanticide and abortions.  Another similarly leaning reader weighed in with his opinion that such expressions by Republican politicians will drive away the independent and undecided voters from Republican ranks.  How curious?

Apparently Democrats do not suffer from such interpretations and utterances by their politicians.  The long record of RR is overflowing with examples of one-sided blindness by our progressive commenters who send their fabled CCC (Collectivist Cricket Corps) to respond when they are reminded of leftwing politicians who think Pacific islands will tip over if over populated on one side or the other.  These extremes are daily joined by others of their ilk proposing patently insane social and economic policies that have never worked and cannot work because they fundamentally misinterpret human nature.  Yet when these are pointed out, not only in advance but also in their aftermath, our neighbors of the socialist tinge again respond through the good auspices of their CCC.  It is as if they are absolutely blind to the impact of their own nostrums, potions, and lotions which they hawk and apply to our body politic.

In contrast, the assemblywoman gave a perfectly plausible causal explanation in the context of her belief system, a belief system the verity of which science cannot disprove no matter the level of sneerage bestowed upon it from the secular humanist Left.  It was nobelist Richard Feynman who made that strong assertion years ago (here).  However, disproving the perennial prescriptions of progressives is a pursuit readily handled by middle-schoolers not yet cognitively castrated by public education.  No matter, the progressives go forward in their pursuit of elitist governance bestowed on democratic masses as if they had a solid record of accomplishments in their public policies portfolio.  We recall that Einstein perfectly labeled such dedicated repetitions perennially bereft of anticipated results.  And once more, they send the CCC into the breach.

The sad part of this tale is that such a liberal mind is now shared by an ever larger cohort of Americans during the new ‘post-intellectual’ age (e.g. Post-intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy, D.N. Wood, 1996).  The progressive elitists have created a perfect voting class that has little knowledge of how things work and even less of the world around them.  The dilemma of such a successful strategy is that the same class of the clueless are more and more difficult to employ with each succeeding year.  Then who will be the ‘other people’ whose money socialism requires to run its brave new world?

Todd, 10:14. Wow, it must really surprise you to know that the largely conservative medical profession has actual professionals devoted to diagnosing and treating those types of issues, and they get paid for it too! Many even vote Republican.

From the 15jul14 Washington Post on the size of the “massive chunk” – “Less than 3 percent of the U.S. population identify themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday in the first large-scale government survey measuring Americans’ sexual orientation.”
Now it’s plausible to accept that a person finally declaring him/herself to be transgendered has gone through some considerable mental trauma. What is the clinical assessment for such people before they are considered eligible to have their plumbing rearranged? Does it vary by state? What are the rights of normal people in their dealings with transgendered people?

Todd, challenging others to state whether they are gay is out of bounds. Makes me think you might be a closet case yourself, along with “Jon”. STIFLE.
“Jon”, I guess the glossy advertser isn’t keeping you busy today. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) of the American Psychiatric Association has a separate chapter for Gender Dysphoria. It is a mental illness; to say otherwise is to admit you stigmatize mental illness. S/he’s got real problems. My choice in general is not to make things even worse for people with real problems, except for a chosen few like Pelline and Frisch who are asking for it.
Regarding the number of gays and lesbians, it’s pretty clear the actual numbers are below 5% and I wouldn’t be surprised if 2% isn’t damn close. The problem “Jon” has is dealing with the Tea Party having 10 times as many adherents than such a major force within Democratic Party politics.

The issue of mental illness in these people who want to be the other sex means the responsibility to fix the brain is up to them. So far they have been unable to convince scientists and doctors that it is immutable. We see the drinking lobby has now made alcoholism a “disease” which qualifies it for ObamaCare.

Todd, this might be a new one for you but there was a study that measured arousal of men viewing porn (it’s OK, prudes, it was for Science!). Gays responded to gay porn, Straights responded to straight porn, and there was some crossover. But the self identified straights who were openly hostile to homosexuals also responded to gay porn, big time (or little time as the case may be).

Gregory, I would say for many diagnoses of diabetes, cancer and heart disease, there certainly WAS a choice before the behaviors and symptoms got out of control. The choice to smoke, or consume 10,000 calories per day in sugary processed foods come to mind. But as you can confirm, words have meaning and whether we like it or not, alcoholism is a disease, no matter what led up to the diagnosis.

On the subject of narcissism, political LOSER Donald Trump got some of the base all roiled up today with red meat comments about Mexican Americans. Ah to be a Republican Spokesperson. No, his comments were not exactly helpful to a Party desperate to grab a decent share of Latino voters. Thanks Donald!
“Hours after Donald Trump launched into an anti-immigrant tirade during his presidential campaign announcement and claimed that Mexican immigrants are rapists and drug dealers, a top Republican party official has done nothing to denounce those comments.
    Unreal.
Sean Spicer, the Republican National Committee’s Chief Strategist & Communications Director, told CNN that Trump’s comments were “not helpful to the cause” of making the Republican party inclusive to Latino voters. But almost immediately, Spicer pivoted to the topic of improving border security”.

Most of the union literature that was passed out where I worked always loved to get the Grubers fired up about how evil some one was with out any real facts as to what the person had done or said. Alcholism is a choice. If a person wants to be in a drunken stupor no one is stopping them. Alcohol is a legal product on the shelves of most stores. A person can choose to buy it and they can choose how much they want to consume. If they continue to consume large quantities and don’t stop, they have a addictive problem. It is not a disease. The idea that it is a disease is a most recent opinion.
Regarding homosexual porn. I have never watched any such thing. But to those who may have an issue they try and say hey, If you are against it you must be a clandestine consumer of it. That is just a bunch of hooey. Anyone that believes that is unhinged.

Jon, this is hot off the press. You probably have been away from the 12 Steppers for awhile. Disclaimer first: I have not drank or tasted or even inhaled one drop of booze in many a year. And yes, I am so dry I am a fire hazard.
With yaddy yaddy said, I heard from someone in alcoholism research just Sunday that alcoholism just got renamed a disorder, not a disease. Something like “alcohol intolerance compulsion falling off the bar stool crawling home to the wrong house during broad daylight every darn day disorder.” So, if Todd says it is not a disease, he happens to be in the know. Personally, when nice folks sincerely ask me if I would like one of their special made good stiff drinks or a gallon and a half of vino or even a refreshing cold beer on a warm day, I always reply with the same line. “No thanks, I have had enough.” Disease, disorder, whatever floats those pocket protector wearing, clipboard holding, coke bottle glasses adorned pointy heads’ boat over in the Fruit Loops aisle.
You have to be deeply disturbed and have some serious issues to ever get in the nuthouse field. I am done with my alcoholism research, along with my cocaine, crank, crack, rock cocaine, gambling, sex addition, pull my finger research, knock on wood.
No thanks, I have had enough. And I done as well with craft time in the ward on Wednesdays. I had enough of the Lithium Scuffle as well. I may be crazy, but I ain’t stoopid.

Kleptomania is such old news, jonnie. It’s been several years now since the klepto debate was settled. Many moons ago, an employer fired an employee for stealing everything not SuperGlued down. The employee sued and won a handsome settlement. Seems that kleptomania is a disability recocognized by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Da Man wrongly fired a disabled person solely cause they were disabled with kleptomania, a violation of Federal Law..
That was a long time ago. Just about the time a Navajo working for the State of New Mexico suited and won another handsome award for being wrongfully terminated from his State job. Seems his religionious practices included smoking lots of peyote buttons, which or course, let to his victory before the bench. Being high of peyote at work is not really coming to the job hallucinating or doing drugs. The pious soul was merely practicing his ancient Native American religious ceremonies, quite frequently as a matter of fact. Oh, in case you were wondering what the aggrieved did for the State of New Mexico (the state with the motto “Land of Enchantment”), why, he was a drug counselor of course. The Liberal Mind is a vast untapped resource.

PaulE 230pm – Ah, another person who knows what a “humane wage” is, better than the person working for the inhumane wage. Now the inhumane wage payer has no obligation to even provide the worker a job, let alone one that he is willing to take. You always have to remember that the worker at whatever wage is working the best available alternative to him. But that may be a too complex concept in behavioral economics.
How about this? Paying increased “humane wages” will increase the cost of products, a cost that will be passed on by the manufacturer and everyone else in the distribution chain. It’s easy enough to estimate such increases in the price the end-user will pay. How about all the people who are truly concerned about minimum and other humane wages take it upon themselves for contributing the marginal price increases to the poor or those receiving inhumane wages. Such contributions can be handled by a private 501c3 clearing house that would identify worthy recipients and manage the cash distributions.
With such an approach, the truly compassionate progressives would not have to reach into pockets other than their own to bring social justice into our economy. They would not have to promote yet bigger and more intrusive government in achieving such good feelings from their altruism. And who knows, such organizations may catch on with enough people who could voluntarily banish inhumane wages from our economy. And good people like you could even start contributing a capella, and enjoy those good feelings before things get really organized everybody starts doing it. What do you think?

Because they are including Malaysia as one of their partners without stipulation.
    Here’s some documentation.
“WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama’s effort to include Malaysia in a major pending trade pact has baffled human rights advocates, who see it as a reward for a regime with one of the world’s worst human trafficking records. But the myriad interests involved in the trade fight include some very large American corporations, which are currently padding their profits with labor costs kept low by modern-day slavery in Malaysia.
Major U.S. electronics brands, including Intel, AMD, Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments and Dell, have relied on Malaysian manufacturing for years — either in their own factories, or through facilities operated by their suppliers. Computer processors, hard drives, smartphone parts and other consumer electronic devices are all part of the slavery system — more than one-fourth of all workers in the Malaysian electronics industry are victims of forced labor, according to a damning 2014 report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Labor.”
