Todd, 6:17am. Why do you keep asking for things that are impossible to produce? Paul E’s point is that only two senators have read the TPP BECAUSE IT IS SECRET (although 600 corporate lobbyists have had input in the provisions of the treaty). We need another Edward Snowden to release the treaty to the public. The fact that they want to fast-track it, taking away the ability for amendments, says volumes. If the TPP was a good thing, they would be heralding the treaty from all corners.
I read something disturbing yesterday that really ticked me off about Obama and the TPP. It seems a resolution passed in the Senate that could force Malaysia out of the TPP because of their horrible record on human trafficking, but Obama wants to make exceptions for this country.
From the HuffPost: Last month, the Senate Finance Committee approved a Menendez amendment that would bar the administration from fast-tracking trade deals with countries that tolerate human trafficking. The State Department has long included Malaysia on its list of countries with serious human trafficking violations, as its government effectively tolerates slavery, including sex slavery. Forced labor is particularly prevalent in the Malaysian electronics industry. The White House insists that including Malaysia in TPP would improve the country’s labor record (although they have not made any moves to stop these practices). Sorry, the link was too long to post here.
We need to call out our parties of choice whenever they deviate from their stated platform. The “my party, right or wrong” attitude is crippling our country. I’m saying loud and clear, Obama is on the wrong side of TPP.

The TPP won’t be secret when actually up for a vote, the procedural machinations to date aren’t the main event.
I fully expect there will be something to hate for everyone once the office of the President decides foreign negotiations are complete and secrecy is no longer appropriate.

Seems to me that Seperate But Equal is alive and well. Because of our wise Department of Justice’s all knowing color blind extreme pressure, the Fergensen PD will now have all the black officers patrol the crime infested barrio beat (black neighborhoods) and the white cops are being pulled out of there and are to patrol whitey neighbors. And never the twain shall meet.
Boy, that sounds like segregation of the police force to this humble observer. Plus, it is not fair or equatable. The blacks cops will be working their tails off chasing down folks running through back yards and scaling fences and being attacked by angry protective dogs all night long, while the white cops will be sitting in their patrol cars guarding gated security alarmed houses waiting for some action besides trying to come up with a four letter word for “extinct bird” to finish the crossword puzzle. It ain’t fair! Not what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. envisioned.
At least Eric Holder was right. America is a racist nation. He should know. He ran a racist Justice DepRtment.

Flippin out? You should be to! The fact that the senate has Fast Tracked the bill without having read it with the provision that it cannot be amended or altered when presented for a final vote is indeed distrubing to me as it should be to you. Obama, whom you hold in great disdain, has been given the green light without congressional oversight to draft the agreement for an up or down vote is totally wrong and virtually without precedent.
The TPP was negotiated in secret by corporate lobbyists and government lawyers. Even Congress doesn’t know what’s in it because they havent read it, but TPP is to be hustled into law through a super-rushed, rubber-stamp process called “Fast Track”.
The only way the bill can be read is by a Senator with no aides for a limited amount of time in a secret room. They are forbidden to talk about or openly debate details of its contents. It was opposed by the Progressives in the Democratic party and Libertarian and Tea Party Republicans, not sucn unlikely bed partners sharing their concerns about secret deals. It waspushed by McConnell and Obama because they represent the heart of the Republicrats who will differ of social issues and enough stuff to make them look independent but know how to bring home the beef to the big money interests when the chips are down as they definatly are in this case.

Just wondering which passage that had a bee up your bonnet, Joe:
“After four years of increased use of the Northern Sea Route by vessels going in transit between Europe and Asia, 2014 saw a steep downturn. The amount of cargo transported in transit dropped 77 percent compared to last year.”
    http://barentsobserver.com/en/arctic/2014/12/northern-sea-route-traffic-plummeted-16-12
Hate to break it to you, Joe, but Arctic ice melts in the summertime, and that passage has been explored going back to the 1600’s. It’s far from being the ice free zone you’re imagining.

Joe Smith@03:10PM That was in summer of 2013.
Northern Sea Route Primarily Carries Oil, Much of the Cargo Involving Russia
Cargo shipping volume through the Northern Sea Route is rising as Arctic ice melts, according to a new report.
The opening up of the Arctic for commercial cargo offers a faster route for some shipments between Europe and Asia, and holds the promise of increased trade for once icebound ports in the High North of Arctic countries such as Russia, Norway and Canada.
However, much of the new traffic through the Northern Sea Route is one-way shipments of fossil fuels from Northern Europe to Asia or is between Russian ports, according to a report to be released Friday (Oct. 31) by the Arctic Institute, a Washington think tank.

Paul Emery, regarding the TPP. No one has read it publicly and my understanding is when it is ready it will be in the open for debate etc. I am optimistic that the free trade will bring jobs to our country and not the giant “sucking sound”. The “corporations” you so hate employ millions of Americans and maybe they care.
Oh, Paul, can you give me the links that tell us that “corporate lobbyists” and government lawyers negotiated this? I assume a trade deal is between nations and logically there are many in the negotiations?

This is a pretty good summary of Tea Party concerns from the venerable Liberty Under Fire website.
Tea Party supporters oppose the treaty primarily because it violates two of its core values: constitutional limited government and the free market…………Amplifying the concern over secrecy and deception is the president’s push for fast track status, meaning an up or down vote of both houses of congress with no debate or amendments. This is blatantly unconstitutional as it, in essence, voids them as the sole architects of law. They have a function far more worthy than merely approving or disapproving law made by benefiting corporations.

Paul Emery, I baited you and you took it. Tell me how it is that since 1992 the country has seen 20 million Mexicans and others from south of the border sneaking into the USA. If all the jobs headed out because of NAFTA it seems strange these illegals would have stayed ion their home countries to take advantage of the huge transfer of our businesses and jobs.
Rodd Perot turned out to be a nut anyway. He had moments of coherency but when he said the CIA was trying to upset his daughters wedding I knew he was a nut. A rich one though.
JoeK, hey you are really incorrect about the sea ice. I suggest you read Russ Steele’s blog about these things.

I support almost nothing emanating from Washington….I support even less that is supported by this White House and I am certainly no fan of this republican senate except when it manages to thwart the goals of the Chief Executive. I find your terror of the TPP simultaneously ironic and hypocritical in these days of Omnibus spending bills….already largely written by special interest lobbyists and crammed full of delicious pork for things like Obamaphones, aircraft the military doesn’t want, and 500K for new media centers in Nevada City. Not to mention laws like Obamacare that was sold as a tax that wasn’t a tax except when it was and championed by a lying scumbag like Jonathan Gruber. As mentioned previously Obamacare was conjured and sold for the benefit of health care companies and to increase the reach and scope of the federal government and other than hearing you say that it doesn’t “go far enough” don’t recall any complaining from you about the machinations required to pass and implement it.
So….am I in favor of TPP? I can’t say as I haven’t read it. But like all things that empower the government further probably not.

JOY PULLMANN: The Civil Disobedience Charles Murray Wants Has Already Arrived.
The federal do-gooders who framed No Child Left Behind back in 2001 never envisioned that parents would take exception to their mandate that every child in grades three through eight (and once in high school) face annual math and reading tests. So the law is entirely silent on what happens if, as is happening now for the first time, thousands of parents across the country pull their kids in protest.
It’s hard to convey just how extraordinary this is. So here are a few snippets from just the past week’s news. In Germantown, Wisconsin, 62 percent of public-school students are sitting out tests. The district has been a hotbed of Common Core opposition, with a local school board among one of the handful nationwide to reject Common Core and decide to run with its own, higher-quality, curriculum. In Maine, “Cape Elizabeth saw 32 percent of its eighth-graders, 18 percent of its seventh-graders and 64 percent of its high school juniors opt out. There are many examples of high opt out rates across the state, but a reliable statewide tally isn’t yet available.” A bill to secure parents’ right to excuse their kids from mandatory tests recently passed the Delaware House 36 to 3 after a blaze of opt-outs left local schools scrambling. “A wide-ranging bill that would eliminate [national Common Core] tests in Ohio and limit state achievement tests to three hours per year passed the House 92-1 on Wednesday,” reported the Columbus Dispatch.
This is nowhere near a set of isolated incidents. In Washington state, every single junior at Nathan Hale High School (natch) refused state tests this spring. Somewhere around 200,000 children refused tests this spring in New York and, contrary to race-baiting from U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, substantial numbers of these defiant parents were not white rich people. FairTest, a lefty organization not keen on rigorous data, nevertheless keeps compiling an impressive number of similar news stories each week.
What does this mean? Does it matter? While the opt-out numbers are unprecedented in American history, they still represent a very small proportion of U.S. schoolkids. I think they do matter, and that they signal many Americans are ready for Murray’s civil disobedience project.
    Are you ready?

Much greater control over that 12% of the economy….government lives for that. The insurance companies wanted the guaranteed income resulting from the compulsory purchase mandate. I can’t wait to watch them jump ship or screw uncle stupid for more money later! Best part of all…..they’ve barely covered any of 33 million uninsured that the law was supposed to help!

Depending on whose numbers one wants to believe, the range for Obamacare uninsured enrollment runs between 5 million on the low end to 16.4 million on the high end.
“Government wanted it…..the healthcare companies were happy to go along.” Yes, government wanted it, so the US would not be the only developed country in the world without some kind of public healthcare plan and it has been a Democratic party priority since the Clinton days, but we all know that Obama is a corporate goon, just like the Clintons, and every mainstream Republican. But I think that if it would have been a pure gov’t plan it would have been “single payer”, which was never seriously on the table. It should have been called “republican care” but that is another story.

I am dumbfounded (and I realize I am leaving myself wide open with that choice of words) that more of you aren’t outraged at the fast-track process for approving TPP. You say you’ll wait until the details are released before you state an opinion. By then, it will be too late. The whole point of “fast-track” is that there will be NO discussion and No amendments.
These trade deals allow corporations to skirt US labor laws and avoid environmental protections (no wonder you aren’t upset about this). Corporations rove the world looking for third world counries to exploit – and when the workers get “too uppity” by demanding living wages, they move to the next unfortunate country. This is modern day slavery.
With TPP, they won’t have to move. They can simply sue a country for loss of “potential” profits if they raise wages.
BTW, 88% of fast food workers are over 20. As American jobs keept dwindling, entry level jobs are all that is left which is why so many people are working two or three jobs. You would have to work a 250 hour work week to afford an averaged price 2 BD apt in LA, a 350 hour week in SF makin minimum wages. What is wrong with this picture?
Shouldn’t it be enough that Obama wants it for you to oppose it? It’s kinda funny that you conservatives are siding with Obama, while progressives oppose him on this issue (because we base our opinions on principles, not personalities).
