[The old sandbox is overflowing again. In the effort to evaluate and/or design alternatively powered vehicles that was initiated in the 27apr15 sandbox, it would help for our more environmentally concerned readers to recognize that the energy to move a given mass (say, automobile) from point A to B in time interval T requires a certain minimal amount of energy, regardless of the power source employed. A commenter in the last sandbox summarized it nicely in a restatement of thermodynamical non-negotiables. gjr]

Two gunmen ‘carrying explosives’ attack anti-Muslim art contest in Texas: Suspects dead and security guard wounded at ‘draw Muhammad’ event that offered $10k prize
Two suspects were gunned down after shooting the guard in the leg outside the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland
Building and surrounding area was placed on lockdown by a SWAT team with around 100 attendees still inside
Reports suggest the pair were carrying explosives at the time, and another two bombs were discovered nearby
The American Freedom Defense Initiative event offered a $10,000 prize for the best caricature of the prophet
Involved a keynote speech from far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders, who has linked the Koran to terrorism

Mr. Bessee. I don’t know where the ACLU is on this matter, but I do know Hillary Rodclam has valiantly served with them in the past. She was been rather busy lately, but still has found the time to be quite the disorganized opportunist. Like watching a jayhawk getting a big acorn stuck in its throat. Greedy little thing she is.

Mr Boardman is the latest community voice to point out the idiocy practiced in Nevada City by its tin-eared city council, planning commission, and other do-gooders of known ideological hue. I realize this is off topic, but i would like to extend an invitation to all of you to attend an informational seminar this Thursday, May 7, at the Empire Grange, from 1:00 – 3:00pm. The Grange is located at 11283 Grange Ct. off La Barr Meadows. Sue Taylor, the only person licensed by the State of CA to teach seniors about the benefits of medical marijuana, will host a workshop, Aging with Grace.
The purpose of the seminar is to inform seniors how cannabis can oftentimes replace harmful pharmaceutical drugs, improve the quality of their lives, and how to nagivate the requirements to obtain medical marijuana legally and sfaely.
This is a free event and is open to the public. I know some of the RR readers are MMJ users (and others could definitely benefit from cannabis) so I hope you will take this opportuity to educate yourselves.LikeLike

Now that a good Texas cop bagged his limit of radical Muslims, maybe we can send their heads back marked “return to sender”, with a note, “Here in the U.S.,, we shoot back”.
Seems the event had a good suspicion that some nuts would show up. They hired their own SWAT team. Looks like the event was some good bait.

Global Labor Glut Sinking Wages Means U.S. Needs to Get Schooled
The long-sought rise in American wages is being suppressed by a global labor glut that is undermining policy makers’ efforts to wring slack from the U.S. job market.
The most effective way of combating this oversupply is to promote increased training and education of U.S. workers so they can provide skills unavailable elsewhere to employers, according to experts who have studied the problem.
Who is going to do this training, the Union controlled teachers in our K-12 schools? The liberal college professors, who are more interested in creating more low information voters then training thinkers who have “skills unavailable elsewhere”? If you train thinkers, they will see through the liberal brain dead mash. No, we are all screwed by a broken education system.LikeLike

News on the Ca. pro pot game. Now the Union wants in on the action. Yup unionizing “trmimmigrants”, and the pot industry in general. That should keep the price of weed good and high. Just wait till local 420 strikes for higher wadges. If you grow your own, will you by law need to have union labor “harvest” it for you?
Union thugs going door to door just to see who has a plant or two? ( unions have those special rights where no warrant is required. You can bet Ca. will give them that.)

Todd,
NBC wants access to the Clinton’s, especially if Hillary becomes President. Don’t you know that the news is now under a for profit business umbrella instead of a public service to gain rights to the public airwaves? Profit motive doesn’t always make for the best product/ service.LikeLike
-
I think the NBC lovefest was all about being simpatico with their favorite people. One must be very naive to forget the liberals own most of the press and have all my 64 years. Now they have to make a profit to stay alive but if they were going to be concerned with money making they should or would all become conservative organizations. Liberals fail at making money and are usually inheriting it or getting freebies from grants from the government.
As Bill Clinton said the other day, ” We did not “knowingly” cheat on our taxes” or something like that. I mean come on, Hill and Bill have never had real jobs but are worth a gazillion bucks. How is that possible?LikeLike

Walt, no one has ever died from using marijuana and I’m not telling seniors to ditch their pharmaceuticals for pot! In fact, I didn’t tell them anything as I wasn’t the speaker, but Sue Taylor started her talk by warning seniors to discuss using MMJ with their primary care giver first and to NEVER stop taking medications without their instruction and approval.
I was very happy with the turnout as over 100 seniors showed up to learn about MMJ despite that we only had four days to promote the event. In fact, we are scheduling another follow-up workshop as they had more questions than we could answer in one session.
Maybe if you had attended you could make an intelligent comment rather than talking through your hat.LikeLike

Seventy years ago on this VE I was a little boy in Liederberg, Germany just having been liberated by a combined arms unit of Patton’s 3rd Army. Although I spent WW2 with a target on my back, I was happy that my parents had the good sense and fortune to get us to southern Germany so that we could welcome America’s greatest generation into the ruins of the Third Reich.

But pretty much overlooked by the whole country, on this same day tens of thousands more GIs and Marines were fighting the greatest battle of the Pacific War on Okinawa, having just executed the world’s largest (bigger than D-Day on Normandy) amphibious landing. They too need to be remembered more on this day than they were in 1945. In that 10-week battle alone we lost over 14,000 killed; over 77,000 Japanese died defending Okinawa. That was war.LikeLike

Dr. R. you are so right, lest we forget. That operation was a taste of what we were going to see when the full invasion took place. The navy took a beating, especially the radar picket ships from the kamikazes. When a lefty guilt tripper starts talking about the immorality of dropping the bomb they display their lack of understanding. The use of the bomb in fact saved Japanese lives when you consider the civilian casualties (including suicides) on Okinawa. My step-dad managed to survive a number of Marine operations in the pacific as a mud Marine. God Bless em all!

DonB 814pm – You are exactly right. To date the nuclear bomb has been an overwhelming life saver ever since we dropped them on Japan – there it literally saved millions of lives. And without nuclear induced MAD during the years since 1945, we would undoubtedly have had another European war as the USSR sought to bolster its failing economy through conquest of western Europe.

Interesting article on Yubanet comparing Nevada County to the other proposed Jefferson counties. It appears that Nev. Co. has very little in common with the others and would probably have to carry the economic load for the rest. Many of those counties are bottom feeders and would fold without government employment, unemployment, benefits, etc.

Elections have consequences. The lefty global warmers were soundly defeated in the latest UK election.
The Conservative Party’s victory in the UK General Election means that it will be able to put its own man in at the top of the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The result of the election should help to move forward the establishment of an onshore shale gas industry in the UK as the Conservatives are fully behind drilling for shale gas in the country.
—David Cameron, 10 Downing Street, 13 January 2014
A key part of our long-term economic plan to secure Britain’s future is to back businesses with better infrastructure. That’s why we’re going all out for shale. It will mean more jobs and opportunities for people, and economic security for our country.
How if we could get a similar regime change in California.LikeLike

so George, if I am decoding your cryptic message correctly, what you are saying is that somehow the low employment and poverty that afflicts most of the Jefferson counties will be taken care of and all the “government” jobs that now pretty much supports those counties will somehow be replaced by the new regime? Just how will that occur especially in the transitional phase from counties to statehood after the funds from CA are discontinued?
Todd–I sense that you are somehow blaming “government” for the lack of jobs, etc., and while this is the typical conservative response, the timber and mining industries that previously supported those counties depend on infinite resources for long term success. That is not the case. While timber is renewable, it is no longer as plentiful and would soon be gone as clear cutting would probably be the MO due to no gov’t regulations. And what about national forest lands? How would Jefferson get around those regulations? Mining is a bust because it too will eventually (if not already) be exhausted and then what? Maybe Jefferson could legalize prostitution and become the “hooker state.” That would require very little infrastructure investment other than seizing a few fleabag motels via imminent domain.LikeLike
