“I do not believe, and I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America,” Giuliani said during the dinner at the 21 Club, a former Prohibition-era speakeasy in midtown Manhattan. “He doesn’t love you. And he doesn’t love me. He wasn’t brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up through love of this country.” (Politico, 18feb15)

Mayor Giuliani’s recent remarks about President Obama’s character and values has caused a national kerfuffle on the Sunday talk shows that to me seems more than a bit silly.  The Mayor said that he didn’t believe Obama loved America in the way most Americans do because of his upbringing and the society in which he traveled.  He was brought up by parents and grandparents who were socialists and communists, and who evinced little love for our country.  And as an adult Obama was constantly exposed to and worked with people of similar sentiments (“God damn America!”, Rev Wright).  So his honor pulled that together as a picture that described the man in the attempt to explain away his unfortunate pronouncements and disastrous policies.

The lamestream, of course, went ballistic and even pulled in some mainstream Republicans to assure everyone that they never ever talk about personalities, but only the person’s policies.  Not only that, but it now appears that the politically correct way to deport oneself when discussing other people is to limit yourself to what they did or were supposed to have done.  To delve into what possibly made them do it has become a no-no.

Well, that’s not the way it was, and truth be told, is not even now.  But you have to be careful when you start trying to dig under a politician’s policies to discover what made him do it then, what he is doing now, and importantly, what he might do in the future with issues yet to be resolved.  Such studies, of course, have been the sum and stuff of analyzing the world's leaders and prominent people since age immemorial.  Humans are by their nature critters who seek to understand and organize their environment by constantly attributing cause – ‘why did he do it?’, ‘why might he do that next?’.  Nowhere is that endeavor more prevalent than in politics, and to hear politicians seriously deny that they ever abstract or talk about someone’s underlying personal traits confirms that when a politician’s mouth is open, he’s most likely lying.

So today, to point out that Obama’s murky past included heavy doses of anti-Americanism in his younger years is held by the Left as being out-of-bounds, prejudicial, and racist.  Today we should only judge him by his public policies, period.  Of course, that was not the case in the treatment of Bush2, Clinton, and other American leaders.  Tomes have been written over the centuries dissecting the personal lives, character, foibles, and values of prominent people to understand and explain their behavior.  Today the CIA and other security services develop and maintain extensive personality profiles on just about everyone in the public eye so that they can explain why they are doing what they do, and can predict what they may do in the future.  It would be utter foolishness not to devise such personality models of important people.  So why can we not explain to others the conclusions we have drawn about what in our opinion makes someone tick?

[26feb15 update]  Listening to comments by Ron Fournier of the National Journal on Fox this afternoon piqued an inquiry of our readership.  Fournier’s dissertation on Obama’s latest charitably labeled missteps jibed with much of what is reported these days.  Many of these missteps have been purposive policies and actions which the overwhelming fraction of Americans would agree have hurt our country.  But Fournier, like every other reporter and commentator today, since Giuliani’s famous statement, has hastened to add the obligatory political correctness that he wasn’t calling Obama unpatriotic.  No, no, no.

Well, I have not been accused of being politically correct, nor do I want to stand so accused in the future.  So I would ask Fournier, and more importantly the more conservative commentators on Fox (e.g. Krauthammer, Riley, Hayes, …), to present evidence that Obama is in fact a patriotic American.  Make two columns on a sheet of paper and title them ‘Unpatriotic Acts’ and ‘Patriotic Acts’.  The column of Unpatriotic Acts has been overfilled for some time now.  The question is – what would these politically correct commentators put in the other column to give evidence of Obama’s patriotism and give balance to the lists?

There is an acronym some people turn to in times of decision. Called ACE for accept, change, or eliminate. Don’t think Obama chose the A.
About college transcripts. Obama attended one year at tiny Occidential College which is not even a beep on the radar. I immediately took an interest because I have two cousins that went there, a high school teammate that was recruited by Occidental College and later I hired a helper who was an Occidental grad. No one can tell us what courses Obama took, his grades, his roommates, etc. Yes, there was one professor who said he remembered him.
Not the end of the world, but it sure raises my eyebrows. We know Al Gore roomed with Billy Joe Thorton , or Billy Ray Something and what Hillary said and wrote in college. We know Bush’s grades in college were better than Gore’s. We know too much…except for the Current President. No one no where no how can find even one paper Obama wrote in college including the Harvard Law Review. No outside insight on his thoughts and formulation of his beliefs except for what he chose to disclose in his books. Historians will have to dig deep.
So, we are left with his actions, current statements, and who his friends are. Another one of life’s unsolved mysteries. Actions speak pretty loud though. ACE? You decide.

Giulani’s remarks make logical sense. If Obama actually believes of America the things he says, why would he like this country, much less love it?
OTOH, if he doesn’t believe them, then the conclusion is the same. L

I think Mr Crabb has actually nailed it. Yes, he does have some (read: a lot) of affection for the place. The place of office – lots and lots of power. And the physical place called the USA. The physical place has lots of hard working white Euro-descent folks to take from and room for millions and millions of non-white non-Euros to give to.
What he has no affection for is the original idea envisioned by our founders that a fed govt would exist solely to protect it’s citizens and ensure our liberty and civil rights. He firmly believes in a govt that will be the decider as to who pays what and who gets what. He does not have any affection for the idea that the USA should be or ever was any better than any other country in the world.

And if the children of thugs cause no wonder in becoming Republicans, what similar succession avoids wonder if they become Democrats?

Them New Yorkers have a different way of doing things. They are not so laid back like us on the Left Coast. Take Anthony’s Weiner for example. Or the Dem hard nosed prosecutor turned Governor who had to leave office for itty bitty teenie weenie indiscretions with Ladies of Ill Repute, or escorts of the evening if you prefer. How quickly we forget all about them. Was his name Elliot or something?
Now, if you want a no nonsense direct reply, just ask a Jersey man. He will tell ya a thing or two in a most straightforward manner, using the fewest words allowable to get his/her point across.
I do like Paul Ryan’s playlist. He ain’t secretive about it and like Gov. Christie, we know everything there is to know about his past. Easy research for future historians, unlike the person referenced in “Pay No Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain”.
Does Obama love America? I don’t know (which in and of itself says a lot). Does his heart beat to Red White and Blue or does his heart throb to Red White and Green? Hard to say. But with friends like Obama, who needs enemas.

He’s just a political hack with nothing better to do, and would have nothing at all to do if Fox News didn’t keep giving him a thin layer of credibility. When Rudy made his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, he bailed out after he lost his first primary. Cut and run seems to be his game.

Dildo Debbie? I prefer the term battery-operated-boyfriend (BOB) except I guess she is gay so maybe she would prefer another term. How did she come by that moniker? Did it have anything to do with Texas?
    Villareal vs. State
    Facts (from the court’s opinion)-
On June 25, 2004, Corpus Christi Police Officer Adrian Dominguez was working undercover when he visited a business, called Friends 4 Ever, to determine if it was selling obscene materials or devices. Dominguez was aware that law enforcement agents had previously informed the business owner that the business needed to cease selling certain items that were considered obscene under state law. Appellant was at the business working as a cashier and sales clerk. During the visit, Dominguez purchased a vibrator from appellant; the vibrator was called “Lick it Lover” and resembled the male sexual organ. A few hours after Dominguez’s purchase, police officers arrived at the business, where they executed a search warrant and placed appellant under arrest.

Brad, indeed the moniker goes back to Texas last election cycle. After the female canidate for Governor and other congressional female Democrat candidates saw they were trailing in the polls, they took the abortion debate to a new level. “The Republicans are going to take away your sex toys!” Of course Debbie from Florida was/Is the head of the Democrat Congressional Election Committee and picked up this and sent mailers out to the Carolinas, Kansas, and the sisterhood in Texas. Thus the moniker. That and being so scary looking, a nice MX Missle shaped Thermos from Starbucks is as close as she will get to the real McCoy.

It’s a matter of being smart, with a wee bit of luck. Ever do something like speeding and the guy behind you got pulled over? Nothing to do with fairness. The readon the stout burley Scots wear kilts is because the darn sheep can hear a zipper 100 yards away. In Missouri, the good rural boys practice safe sex by spraying a big orange X on the sheep that kicks. See, it’s all out being quick on your feet, improvising, and being smart. They just want a piece of ewe. Nothing to do with fairness, but I have strayed off topic.
Obama just goes around critizing the good ole USofA endlessly like Brother Ben. Blame America first. Sure, the British colonists roughed up his grandpappys and threw him in jail. And his papa really hated the Jews. So it makes sense that Obama treats the representatives and Ambassors from Israel and Great Britian so shamefully (for a President of the USA to treat our closest allies) Secretary of State Hillary drove it home when she declared that France is our closest ally. Yep, France did help us kick the Redcoats back across The Pond. Couldn’t have done it without them. Actually, the Aussies are possibly our closest ally as they have joined with us in every conflict in the last hundred years.
Can you really say Obama loves this country? If he was like me, he would say “I love my country but I fear my government.” Good luck ever hearing that from Mr. Bigger Government Is Better.

It all sounds very Christian of Obama to take the “let those without sin cast the first stone” stance regarding who are the bigger evil doers. I think he is merely pointing out that the US and all religions have done things that might seem now as over the top (Crusades, Dresden, Hiroshima).
The mention by Obama of the atrocities of the Crusades as compared to recent ISIS publicity stunts is just that- a comparison. Heck, Lincoln (the Great Emancipator) mass-hanged over 30 Indians (I guess they felt emancipated as their necks snapped), so he has ISIS beat-so far.
    http://www.unitednativeamerica.com/hanging.html
Speaking of medieval behavior, the Middle East seems to be kind of retarded in that medieval way and stuck in the old tribal/religious past, probably because of sleep deprivation due to those guys chanting from the minarets across the land every 5.5 hours.
They seem very macho, and the society very male dominated (kind of like Texans with their dildo prohibition- what’s next, the vegetable isle of the grocery store?).
Over the centuries, the Mid East has been overrun by various groups who have carved the place into territories. After the World Wars, a lot of lines were drawn in the sand over there by the victors without, I am guessing, consulting the locals. Seems like more than a few are still pissed off about it.
Could ISIS want to create a new ‘country’ based on religious and cultural homogeneity – kind of like America used to be after we killed the Indians and before the Muslims and illegals arrived?

re RLCrabb 756am – Since their development during WW2, the nuclear weapon has arguably been the greatest savior of human life outside of vaccines and antibiotics. The lives lost in wars between countries since then have been a pittance, since all such subsequent wars have been constrained in duration and scope due to the fear that they may escalate into civilization destroying nuclear exchanges.
The biggest killers have always been governments killing their own in planned mass murders that had no limits on duration and scope (one of the downsides of the Westphalian order). The latest and greatest killing of over 100M Chinese occurred during China’s Cultural Revolution – totally self-contained, ignored by the world, and still politically incorrect to talk about due to the new economic prowess of China.
As per ScottO’s 824am, governments all over continue to be the distillations of their people’s worst spirits. They have always extracted a terrible price for providing us with the vestiges of social organization. And as popular dumbth has become endemic, so has the ability of governments to manufacture and project evil. Our Founders knew this.
But big government has bred its own massive congregations of worshippers, promising economic salvation and social justice for those who would only believe and comply. As more and more serious observers and writers have started puzzling about the state of affairs between the worshippers and skeptics, they conclude that there is no middle ground to be found. The Great Divide is not only real, but wider than ever.

You are mistaken, it is corporate America (especially financial, pharmaceutical, military complex, and energy sectors)that control the Democratic and Republican Party’s who in turn control our government. It is working out great for them and lousy for the rest of us.

Wrong Ben! Without the mechanism and threat of force backing government the entities you cite would have far less control over our lives.
So Walt is correct, it is government.
