The only thing effectively led from behind is a retreat, for in that direction you are already properly positioned to lead.

In concert with President Obama’s just ended sideshow on “violent extremism” that once more diverts attention from our true enemy, John Kerry writes (here) that the solution to the global assault is really a jobs program for disaffected Muslim youth.  In the process the whole purpose is to convince America’s gruberized that “a more prosperous and safer future requires us to recognize that violent extremism can't be justified by resorting to religion.  No legitimate religious interpretation teaches adherents to commit unspeakable atrocities, such as razing villages or turning children into suicide bombers.  These are the heinous acts of individuals who distort religion to serve their criminal and barbaric cause.”

This is about as good a testament to hopeless denialism as can be fashioned.  In reality, the violent extremists (aka ragheads) are undeniably the most sincere, dedicated, and committed of faithful hordes that have ever gathered to spread and enforce their vision of Man serving God’s will.  The grievously useless idiots in Washington and elsewhere actually do believe that people will travel long distances to suffer privation, bleed, and give their lives for some gratuitous “criminal and barbaric cause”!  They also believe that such people will be persuaded to put down their weapons by some government jobs program in the Middle East.  Were that to be true, we would be witness to an historical shift in human nature, instead of a reprise and continuation of the war between Islam and the world of infidels it seeks to conquer and convert.

Islam divides the world into the ummah – the global community of Muslims – and infidels – the non-believers who must eventually either accept Allah or be dispatched.  As part of their missionary zeal, the Quran permits and encourages the use of taqiyya if it will advance Islam.  In the face of this our leaders are telling us that it is they who are the final word in interpreting the teachings of Muslim scripture and attendant historical commentaries like the Hadith and the more recent and widely influential writings of Sayyid Qutb (1906-1966).  Today the rekindling of Islam’s war on the west has been and continues to be preached throughout Islam by prominent clerics with followings in the millions.

Yet we in our capitals loudly deny the deep religious and spiritual influence that fundamental Islam has on bringing more and more young Muslims and converts to an epiphany that gives meaning to their lives and sets their course of action.  Designating these young men and women who enthusiastically place themselves in danger, suffer hardships, and willingly give their lives as common criminals and thugs is the height of contemporary western hubris and dangerous ignorance.

When Islamists amass into forces numbering in the tens of thousands (more?), who then conquer, hold and administer territories the size of sovereign nation-states on multiple continents, whose call attracts more tens of thousands from across the world while offering no riches but only relevance and deliverance, then history and reason dictate that they no longer can be labeled criminals and thugs to be dealt with the tools and institutions that our civil society has traditionally mobilized against such enemies.

We will be successful in countering fundamental Islam only when we recognize and respect its adherents in our midst and on the battlefield as a zealous and courageous people, completely dedicated to the teachings of their prophet and god, and willing to give their all in attaining the cosmic goal in which they believe and to which they are charged.  To deny the power of fundamental Islam and do less than that is to yield our principles, traditions, and values to a social order that to us is beyond words reprehensible and atrocious.

Obama has the advantage must of us posters here do not have. He sees America through the eyes of the Muslim world due to his upbringing in Muslim countries coupled with the strong views of his very anti-colonialist father and Ben Emeryisque mother. “The sweetest sound he ever heard was the call to (mosque) prayers.” he wrote.
Some of us, if not most,, on the other hand see a jobs program as the solution to poverty and believe economic opportunity as the solution to society’s ills. These ills most certainly include abject poverty which fosters crime, unrest, discontent, and Revolution in the streets. Lack of economic opportunity results in what the Rolling Stones called “Street Fighting Man”.
This is where Dr. Rebane’s post hits the mark. Those signing up to join the ranks of ISIS include doctors, lawyers, businessmen, and countless from the middle class and the affluent from North Africa and Europe among the po folk. They have joined a cause bigger than themselves and greater than their countries’ boundaries. They are on a mission from God. Period. They cannot be bribed, bought, or brought to the peace table. A Marshal Plan is not in their goals. Total Western withdrawal from their lands is not their goal. Their sole aim is The Caliphate.
In a way I can relate. I hold some beliefs that no amount of economic opportunity, negotiations, talk, or being slammed by those with opposing ideas will ever ever change. These are core beliefs I hold dearly and suspercede the law of the land.
We are fighting those who hold certain ideas greater than themselves and being 100% religious in nature, and they, like Hebrew hot dogs, are following a recipe handed down from a higher calling.
Obama still longs for the days of his youth when he heard the sweetest sounds he ever heard. Unfortunately, his boyhood childlike impressions of the sounds coming from the mosque does not include the sounds and rhetoric going on inside the mosque. Thus his constant outreach to the Muslim Brotherhood, the group his father cherished. Obama is simply behind the times and purposely turns a blind eye to today’s realities.

Want to have some innocent fun? Google up “photos of Obama and Frank Marshall Davis together.” Eye opening, some pure BS, some rather thought provoking…

For an expansion of the ideas presented in my post, please see Graeme Wood’s piece in The Atlantic which is drawing a lot of national attention.

Columnist Peggy Noonan in the 21feb15 WSJ asks ‘Why won’t the president think clearly about the nature of the Islamic State?’ and gives you a thumbnail of Wood’s article.

The depth of the article in The Atlantic provides an excellent picture of ISIS’ goals and dogma. I found it interesting that a more aggressive approach in 2011/12 could have thwarted the efforts of ISIS, which in time could cause ISIS to collapse under its own weight due to lack of rapid territorial expansion. In this regards, it would seem that the best option would not be an outright war (which would play into ISIS propaganda), but rather limiting its territorial increases would in essence “starve the best” in due time. The Saudis have recognized this chink in the armor of ISIS’ propaganda machine, and thus have taken excellent steps to secure their borders.

In conclusion, the article makes the best argument thus far on how to handle ISIS, and can best be summarized in 3 points:
    1) ISIS is a legitimate and developing threat with deep rooted religious and ideological goals (this is the 1 point that our current administration fails to acknowledge on a variety of levels)
    2) An open war with ISIS would play into their hand, thus increasing the rate at which they garner members to advance their cause
    3) The best option would be to limit the amount of conquered territory by ISIS, which can be achieved through US-backed airstrikes and strict border enforcement by neighboring countries.

KeenO 157pm – Yes indeed. However the best option is unavailable in any near-term because the Iraqi army is incompetent, which characteristic it will demonstrate in the upcoming pre-announced spring offensive to recapture Mosul. In the meantime, you can bet the farm that ISIS is not sitting on its butt, instead it is consolidating, rearming, and training its new recruits. There is a lot of land left to conquer in Syria and Iraq.
Our hope is that its fundamental refusal to adopt the Westphalian norms (e.g. recognize borders, adhere to non-agression treaties) will ultimately stiffen the backs of its Muslim neighbors.

Some thoughts from the Diplomad 2.0 on Mari Harf and Obama’s Extremism Summit.
Dear Mari, it’s not a profit that drives the ISIS thugs, it’s the “Prophet.”
Too hard on the Deputy Spokesperhubeing? Probably. She, of course, is crippled by an elite education; we must take that into account. Worse, however, the inane insanity she spouts is THE OFFICIAL LINE. Yes, Dear Mari had not strayed off her talking points. At his pathetic little Extremism Summit, the President once again took to the podium to remind us that his teleprompter tells him that we are not war with Islam. Even he, however, has a problem coming up with non-Muslim terror in his pathetic little speech. Once he starts dealing with specific examples, guess what happens? They’re all examples of Muslims killing people in the name of Islam. He admonishes the Great Unwashed that despite that, we should ignore the news cycle’s portrayal of Muslims and that we should stress our success at diversity. In the midst of his speech, the “Leader” of the Free World, spends a lot of time berating Europeans for not “embracing” their Muslims.

More here, worth the time to read:
