[OK, it's that time of the year again for the major entertainment event of winter (and here you thought it was SuperBowl) when President Obama tells us again how the country's ills will be cured by taxing the rich and redistributing to the poor, er, middle class.  Tomorrow night's the night, brace yourself with an abundant serving of your favorite adult beverage.  And not to worry if you miss it; we are told that the half-life of a State of the Union speech is about five minutes.]

Obama’s ratings have risen as the price of gas and diesel have fallen, putting more money in peoples pickets. The interesting thing is he had nothing to do with the falling price of oil, that is driven by the oil glut on the global market. That glut was the result of fracking technology, which is not being used on Federal lands. In fact Obama’s EPA has done everything possible to inhibit the use of fracking technology. So, O’s rating are going up, for reasons outside of his control. One major oil disaster, natural or terror related, will rapidly drive up the price of oil on the global markets and O’s rating will go down, down, down.

Thanks for the link Todd. In the polls cited yes indeed Obama is at 37% with Reuters but all the other Polls in the RCP link shows him in mid or high 40’s. Either way he’s having a bit of a surge lately. Care to compare his numbers to Bush? It’s pretty ugly. bush dipped into the high 20’s in some of the established polls.

Just thought I’d refresh you on what a really unpopular President poll numbers are. This is from Fox.
“President Bush’s job approval rating slipped this week and stands at a new low of 33 percent approve, down from 36 percent two weeks ago and 39 percent in mid-March. A year ago this time, 47 percent approved and two years ago 50 percent approved (April 2004).

Paul, I don’t care what anyone says about the humanitarian George W Bush. I will always have a soft spot for him. Always. When Bush was Governor of Texas, he pardoned me, sealed all my records, and made a phone call and got my name changed to begin anew. Thus I ended up here in the foothills as mild manner blogger Bill the Tozer.
In the old days it was called “unlawful flight to avoid prosecution”, another felony. Since Governor Bush stepped in, it is now called “a change of scenery”. The only thing BubbaBubba or any employer’sbackground check can find on me is a change of address from a non-existent address in Colfax. I love Bush and his lovely librarian bride: “Now George, everyone deserves a second chance.” I love Laura.

BillT what a great story. Paul Emery has Bush Derangement Syndrome so his opinions are simply tainted and I could care less. Sure Bush made errors in the job and there are always people to point them out. But when someone like the Emery’s do it, it is a hoot. Many little African kids and many women are alive today because of his gifts to them regarding AIDS. The good always gets a passing by the libs. Antway, I just crack up when he gets on his BDS.

I have no problem with being a student of history but a significant difference between The Bush and Obama poll ratings is that Bush’s ratings are history and therefore likely to have ittlr, if any, effect on the present and the future. Obama’s ratings, on the other hand…

MichaelK 805am – Quite true. But in light of the travesty of Obama’s presidency, the Bush2 presidency is like an irritating itch that has to be continually scratched. And since there has been little success since 2009 (the economy is struggling back in spite of Obama’s nostrums), and even fewer prospects for his remaining time in office, what more can be done by his supporters than an attempt to divert attention to the past? ‘Pay no attention to the accomplishments of the man in office …’

Well, I must say that Arnold and Jerry at least had a piece of paper to sign before hiking our gas tax to build low income housing and a Choo Choo to Button Willows, the famous truck stop know for its prositutues on the outskirts of Bakerfield.
Looks like the Governor of Washington is taking a page out of of the Obama playbook and don’t need to sign no stinkin’ legislative papers to sign. We should be grateful that we live in The Golden State instead of The Evergreen State. Always a silver lining.
But, like CA, the new gas tax hike will not fill one pothole nor resurface one single street. With gas prices so low, nobody will notice, right? Nobody will notice until gas climbs up to 5 bucks a gallon in a few years and we can all blame the evil fossil fuel industry and demand the Great Fathet in Washington open up the strategic reserves.
Lower gasoline prices puts a smile on every middle class and poor folks’ faces, but a big frown on our Defenders of Mother Earth’s contorted faces.

PaulE 1010am – The answer to your question solicits the revisiting of what were the causes of the Great Recession which struck during Bush2’s last year in office. We have circled that barn too many times in these pages, and you (and everyone with modicum reading skills) know what my position is.
And scratching that irritating itch has nothing to do with the history of the recent Mideast ‘wars’. They could have been better fought and then administered, but the precipitous departures architected by Obama clearly devalues the sacrifices we made in life and limb. Why don’t you and other liberals talk about the coulda/woulda/shouldas of wiser policies that Obama could neither generate nor execute? That is more recent history which is still unfolding and could perhaps be improved by today’s president.

Here’s another sandbox entry for the day… propane prices. They are continuing to drop.
Just called my current supplier … I own my tank, purchased when I bought my house 20+ years ago, the 500 gallon tank cost me about $500 then. Price is $1.75, but would be a buck more a gallon were I one of their captive customers, using a tank they own and only they can legally fill. No, I won’t identify them but all the propane companies that rent tanks play the same game. Some are better than others.
Here’s what the current propane inventories look like…
    https://marketrealist.imgix.net/uploads/2015/01/us-propane-stocks.png?w=660&fit=max&auto=format
I expect the midsummer price will really be in the weeds.

I should mention the one local propane company that has a clean and fair pricing structure is Ace Propane
    http://www.acepropane.net
They sell tanks, they lease tanks at an above board rate (not built into a big overcharge for delivered propane) and they ostensibly charge everyone the same price (though they have given me a half decent break on their published rate when I’d fill the tank and cut a check on the spot). In fact, the guy who started the company (then called Acme Propane) round when I bought my house had a business model of selling tanks for not much more than cost so he could fill them; his service was also very prompt, but only because he didn’t make people wait for when he was servicing that area, which in the end, ran him ragged and killed his profit margins. Ace does a nice job balancing both.
I should really try to have them give my my summer fill.

The difficulty for the Pubbers is how they are going to keep the party unified with their likely shift towards moderation in their nomination of a Pres candidate. If Obama is able to maintain reasonable poll numbers, to which he seems to be drifting, it will be an indication that the Party needs to be cautious in their direction and not be very far off center. The Ted Cruz types will raise a fuss for sure but the Center is where the money is and that carries the day for sure.

PaulE 258pm – That may be a “difficulty” for Repubs. However, the counter argument for not running in the middle is that they tried it twice – ’08 and ’12 – and it didn’t work. And according to the pollsters that was because the middle candidates didn’t excite enough of the Repub base which didn’t vote in droves.

I think the shellacking the Republicans gave the dems in November is being misread by Paul Emery. The people want a conservative push. Illegal immigration, balanced budget, less regulations, pass the XL etc. Those issues are far from extreme. Now that the Islamo terrorists are running rampant around the planet we see an even greater degree of desire by the people to counteract them. Obama’s numbers now are meaningless.

That’s a very real issue for both parties, how to energize the base. Also, the Repubs have to please the big money cats (Chamber of Commerce etc) which called a time out when Cruz was strutting his stuff. They made it very clear they would withhold their dough if that faction gains too much power. They will absolutely not support any candidate who does not support fast tracking the TPP which is by far the biggest issue for big business support. It would be supremely hypocritical for ANY Tea Party supporter to support any candidate that supports the
TPP so there you have the dilemma. Of course any Dem candidate would support it. Here you have the Republicrats settling on a middle ground to keep the bucks flowing.
In my view both bush and Obama should have been fired by the voters after their dismal first terms. If they were first round draft picks in the NFL they would have both been gone in fours years. The Parties deney us that choice which is why I wont vote for either party.

    Paul, easy answer.
Let the French do the killin. They are afterall our declared closest alley per our former Secretary of State Hillary. France as already banned the ugly black drab unfashionable burka (bad for France’s excellent fashion reputation) and since we lead from behind anyway I nominate the French. If it breathes, it bleeds. Kill them all, then take John McCain’s song to our lips and Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran.
First hit the low hanging fruit. Hit the Sunni mosques at prayer time. The places will be packed full and there will be a lot of twofers so we can use less ammo. Then hit every Toyota pick-em-up truck that moves, another opportunity of more twofers. That will teach them not to use Fords, the number one selling pick-em-up truck in the world.
We should let the Aussies in on the party as they have a score to settle as well.
We should leave Afganstan intact and not waste good American made projectiles on the cavemen there, with the exception of dumping Agent Oramge on all the poppy fields. That will put the hurts on the Taliban big time and have them throw their shoes at us and shake their fists at the sky.

Construction-equipment maker Komatsu Ltd. has plans to solve a potential shortage of construction workers in Japan: Let drones and driverless bulldozers do part of the work.
Tokyo-based Komatsu said Tuesday it planned to use unmanned aircraft, bulldozers and excavators to automate much of the early foundation work on construction sites.
Under Komatsu’s plans, U.S.-made drones would scan job sites from the air and send images to computers to build three-dimensional models of the terrain. Komatsu’s unmanned bulldozers and excavators would then use those models to carry out design plans, digging holes and moving earth.

This is what happens when you force a small business to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. Others with opposing views will try to force the small business to make them a cake as well, in the name of fairness I suppose. While tempted to say “what’s good for the goose is good for the gander”, I will look at the big picture and ask what the heck are lawyers and judges and courts doing stickingg their snouts into a small business?
Sure, we have all seen the signs “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone”, but this is getting ridiculous. There is a difference between refusing service to a drunk falling off the barstool (or barring someone solely because of race, creed or National origin) and forcing a business to perform a service. The world has gone stark raving mad I tell ya.
