HecklerVetoFor years RR has documented the sad retreat of our fundamental rights and liberties, the withdrawal of which has not caused many an eyebrow to be raised among the country’s gruberized hosts.  Instead, it has given rise to celebrations of every newly minted political correctness by our neighbors on the Left – for an enlightened society is a society mandated, monitored, and moderated.

The latest of these celebrate the advent of what has become known as the ‘heckler’s veto’.  This is where a protest – no matter its size, source, or legitimacy – can shut down free speech and cause exercises of the First Amendment to be reclassified as “mechanisms of subordination”.  This, in the eyes of the Left, removes any such protested speech from under the protective umbrella of said amendment.

In the recent past we have seen hecklers’ vetoes shut down entrepreneur Peter Thiel’s speech in Berkeley, invited commencement speeches by Condoleezza Rice and Christine Lagarde, and (seatbelts please) the ban on wearing American flag T-shirts in an American school on Cinco de Mayo “to avert violence”.  The list can be extended indefinitely, but you get the idea.

Other initiatives are in the works such as Muslims colonizing western countries working through their Organization of the Islamic Conference to pass laws that prohibit the “defamation of religion” and “any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination”.  On the secular side China has successfully squelched the participation of their dreaded Falun Gong – a religious society proscribed in China – in holiday observances and exhibitions within these United States.

Starting back in 1989 with the fatwa calling for the murder of Salman Rushdie (for writing The Satanic Verses), we have seen a progressive growth of such hecklers’ vetoes that most recently gave us North Korea’s attempted censoring of Sony’s movie ‘The Interview’.   To my mind the greatest victim of this scourging of the First Amendment has been the abrogation of free speech on the campuses of America’s colleges and universities that are run amok by their leftwing administrations and professoriates.  And sadly, when we listen to our indoctrinated young emerging from government schools, there is much more of that to come as we recall that great nations, impervious to outside assault, have instead fallen from within.  (More here.  Image by David Klein from the 30dec14 WSJ.)

[update]  From this post’s comment stream with contributions on both sides of the ‘who suppresses free speech’ issue, I have noticed that the main point which I and David Klein want to emphasize seems to have been either completely missed, or is simply not accessible to some readers.  So let me be more explicit.  The protesting of something by speaking out against it is does not satisfy the definition of ‘heckler’s veto’.  For example groups or event speakers railing against abortion clinics or gun rights has nothing to do with such a veto, simply because the target of the speech – operation of the clinics or private gun ownership – is not impeded by the protesting speech.  But if such protest or threat of protest suppresses (or effectively vetoes) someone’s ongoing or planned expression of free speech, then that is a de facto ‘heckler’s veto’.  In other words, to be a heckler’s veto such heckling must make the targeted speech impossible or induce authorities to shut it down and/or prevent its future expression.

Paul Emery, yes, the sources you use are not actual Limbaugh quotes but those made up by Media Matters and other leftwing sources. Limbaugh uses humor and hyperbole to make a point and you have as usual, fallen for the lefty demagogues BS. But keep trying. You may get it right someday.

Can you offer some specific examples of this?

    One of hundreds of references:
    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/03/islamic_states_push_to_crimina.html
Judging from the articles, the push seems to be a two steps forward, one step back kind of thing. Between demographics and the ongoing philosophical collapse of the West, I expect that their efforts will be quite successful over time. It’s certainly not a situation you would have predicted in Western Europe as it was rebuilt after WWII.

For your readers can you give a brief timeline of Western Colonization of Muslim nations/ regions going back a few centuries. In this you will see where the term “Chickens coming home to roost” is taking place.

    Walt,
Isn’t it the same for Christians within Muslim nations? They want protection from discrimination. Remember the Golden Rule. Christians first discriminated against Muslims therefore they are returning the favor.
    Violence begets violence
    Bigotry begets bigotry
    Discrimination begets discrimination
According to one of your own right wing ideologues John Bolten the US is Chief Enabler of Christian Persecution.
    http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/4312/muslim-persecution-christians-january
So why in recent years has the problem gotten worse? Could it be the west invasion of Muslim nations and the US policies of torture, Muslim round ups without charge or due process, and overwhelming military presence in their nations. With the invasions of both Afghanistan and Iraq we accelerated the hatred and violence. Until you guys can admit our illegal invasions of these countries and our current illegal drone warfare program throughout the middle east has greatly contributed to the current day problems we are only going to make things worse. “Terrorism” has only gotten worse since the US declared war on the emotion of “terror”.
    Remember
    Violence creates more violence
    Bigotry creates more bigotry
    Discrimination creates more discrimination
I don’t remember Jesus preaching or teaching any of these qualities to get into heaven, do you?

BenE 919am – A good question that would lend perspective to the conversation. For openers, there should be no contention that Islam and Christianity have both traded territories over the centuries in conquest and colonization. The timeline is not all that complex and begins with the spread of Islam by the sword from the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century. By the end of the first millennium Islam had conquered and colonized all of north Africa (and most of its eastern coast), the middle east, Europe’s Iberian peninsula, and all but the eastern seaboard of India. During the 800-1000+ period Muslim navies sought territorial footholds on the Italian boot and the Balkans.
During the second millennium Islam’s armies expanded into south central Europe and what today is the Indonesian chain of islands. At the beginning of the second millennium Europe’s Christian kingdoms launched a series of ‘crusades’ to retake their Holy Land and blunt Islamic expansion. These had limited success with Christian control of the Levantine quickly dwindling and ending before 1300. Meanwhile the Ottoman Turks emerged as the Islamic power in the Levantine, conquering most of north Africa, the Levantine extending into Arabia, and all of south central Europe. This control lasted well into the 18th century, and it remains today in the Caucuses (Azerbaijan, southern Russia, Georgia) and the Balkans (primarily in Albania and Kosovo). The Islamic conquest of Europe began a hiatus with the Ottomans’ 1683 defeat at the Battle of Vienna.
European pushback into Islamic territories began in the 15th century at the end of which the Iberian peninsula again was all Christian. European conquests of Islam began in earnest in the 18th century and ended for all intents and purposes after the Treaty of Versailles concluding WW1, and legally with the ending of WW2. Today Islam again controls all of Asia Minor and is again on the march in Africa and has established itself in the population centers of Europe. According to their current geo-theocratic leaders, 1683 was considered to be the beginning of halftime used for consolidation, retrenching, and planning the resumption of the battle to establish the global caliphate.
A marked difference between Islamic and Christian territorial conquests during this thousand year see-saw was the way each sought to proselytize the populations of the conquered lands. Christianity’s efforts ranged between lame and non-existent since the latter day colonizations were done for economic purposes and not to spread the faith. Opposed to this was and still is Islam’s intent to become THE global religion with its enduring ‘Accept Allah or die!’ Today Islam tolerates no Christian territories or enclaves in its lands.

Ok y’all, time to shut this thread down and button up the hatches. Oooppps, wrong blog. Me sorry. forgot where I was at. Carry on.
Ben E, Jesus taught the one can never get into heaven by good moral conduct. It is solely by belief in Jesus as the Messiah, the one from God and who is God, that one can get into Heaven. As he said, no one can come to the Father except by me. He also said that he and the Father are one. It is by faith and not by works, so no man can boast. The great trip clause for those that pride themselves of their superior altruistic lifestyle.
In the beginning God said let US…….wrap your head around God said let us….hmmmm. Hard to comprehend that ain’t it, but I digress again. ,
Brother Ben, honesty, good morale conduct, and love for all people is great and God like, but is the result of belief in Jesus, not the path to Jesus or heaven as you put it.. Of course there are natural laws like karma that Jesus reinforced, as we all know exist. What you sow is what you reap. Forgive us AS we forgive others. Jesus taught us to love God with all our mind, will, and attention and as a direct result of that, we will naturally focus secondarily of our very important human relations with our followers on this temporary orb. Me thinks you fall into the trap of putting the cart before the horse. No man enters heaven by being a caring person or good person. This ain’t about winning the caretaker of the year award.
Jesus was clear. No one comes to the Father but through him. He said he is the way, the truth, and the Life. Bold proclamations indeed. Either he was a madman, a nice moral instructor, or who he said he was. The Great trip clause for most who endeavor to live a life of upstanding moral and philosophical convictions. Most prideful, IMHO. But be patient, God is not through with me yet.
. Like the thief on the cross with Jesus who lived a bad life, Jesus told him this day you will be with me in Paraside. Why, the thief was never even baptized or never received the Good Samaritain Award. He just believed Jesus was who he said he was. Not very scientific I might add

    George,
Would you say that Europe’s colonization was more about resources than religion? Keeping the engine of prosperity for a small few in a Monarch and Feudal ridden continent, in my opinion.
Also my opinion the reaction of modern day false Islam is just that, a reaction to the colonization and resource theft that has taken place over the last 150 years. The difference is they are using Islam as a rallying point where European conquest or colonization was forced military service and then occupation, using Christianity as a justification for the violent policies. Personally I don’t see a big difference between the behaviors of killing and oppression. Islam is not any more violent than Christianity at this stage in its development. Remember what was taking place in the name of Christianity 600 years ago really up until the early 20th Century. This is the stage of development Islam is at the moment. Then we need to think about how violent Judaism was towards Indigenous people/ beliefs and Christians to understand where Christians and now the last sect of Abraham in Islam gets their violent tendencies.
Now here is where we really split apart even more. I don’t see Islam trying to take over anything other than the region which traditionally has been Muslim for the last 1400 years. Basically kicking out the influence of western society and trying to force a very strict form of a specific interpretation of Islam on the people. As horrible as I think these policies are I truly don’t believe it is in the US interests to intervene. I do believe it is in the world interest to intervene to stop the assaults on human rights but not the US as the major force time and time again. Through cooperation not force is the answer, in my opinion.

BenE 1122am – In my 1055am I did say ” Christianity’s efforts ranged between lame and non-existent since the latter day colonizations were done for economic purposes and not to spread the faith. Opposed to this was and still is Islam’s intent to become THE global religion with its enduring ‘Accept Allah or die!’ Today Islam tolerates no Christian territories or enclaves in its lands.”
The rest of your comment illustrates the vast differences in our interpretations of recorded history. For example your “using Christianity as a justification for the violent policies” – I can find no evidence for that, can you? Nor can I find evidence to substantiate “Islam is not any more violent than Christianity at this stage in its development.” Islam is 1,400 years old, Christianity is 2,000 years old. Christianity was 1,400 years old during historical times when ALL nations practiced brutal punishments on their subjects and enemies. Islam is 1,400 years old in a post-Westphalian world with totally different standards, institutions, and treaties which condemn the very core institutions of practiced Islam. To argue/apologize that all human developments must follow the same paths no matter the different ages in which they find themselves is IMHO beyond naïve.

    George,
Just take a look at the Crusades against Islam or at the military life of Oliver Cromwell with Protestant over Catholic in Ireland and then Scotland as good examples. There are hundreds if not thousands of examples.
Some will say the Christian Crusades against Islam was defensive, which could be a very valid point. If that is the case, couldn’t we say the same thing in today’s Islam not necessarily against Christianity but against a culture of Western Society that has encroached Muslim lands for the last 175 years. Again, we are talking about violence creating more violence. Your solution seems to be based in the same line of thinking, a holy war.
Although I do not support missionaries of any particular religion I would say their strategy of a less violent approach is more successful for lasting positive change and in line with my solution of cooperation and inclusion instead of might makes right or my way or the highway.

    Bill T,
I would say you are misreading the teachings of Christ. All of the teachings of Christ is about moral behavior of the individual since “God”/ Christ is within all of us. Unless we recognize the “God”/ Christ consciousness in ourselves we will not experience heaven, which is here and now. So the examples of Jesus behavior towards others is model for us to experience heaven. In the afterlife we will be in the presence of “God” in a space that time no longer exists.
Teachings of Jesus are a path to the edge of spirituality or connection to the ultimate power source a.k.a. “God” and that last step is where faith comes into play. For most people, the last step comes at the end of life and we all need to take that step towards the next journey by ourselves. Again by ourselves doesn’t mean without “God” since “God” is within us all.
Go ask a minister or priest about what I am trying to communicate and I bet almost all of them will agree. Some might not but I would say they are more about growing numbers of their congregation instead of the teachings of Christ.
Here is where I think you like most people misread or are taught a very different version of the teachings of Christ. It is our actions that makes a person a Christian. In Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is telling how to live a righteous life and by doing so will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. That Kingdom is our lives and if we try and live the righteous life on earth we to can experience heaven along side of Jesus and this is done within ourselves.
Here is a passage from the Gospels of Thomas. What this is showing is just like you and I those who wrote about Jesus differed in their perception, interpretation, and opinion of what was said.
Heaven is upon us if we are living the correct way. Gospel of Thomas 113.
His disciples said to him, “When is the kingdom going to come?” , “It is not by being waited for that it is going to come. They are not going to say, ‘Here it is’ or ‘There it is.’ Rather, the kingdom of the father is spread out over the earth, and people do not see it.”
Here is where Thomas is speaking about the fact that “WE” are one with Jesus and therefore it is through our own actions we will experience heaven or the connection with “God”.
“Whoever drinks from my mouth will become as I am, and I will become that person, and the mysteries will be revealed to him.”

BenE 1233pm – We could indeed say that Islam’s onslaught of western civilization is a defensive strategy. RR is on record for years attesting that Islam’s assertion that they cannot live with western civilization because it will taint and then destroy Islam as taught by its prophet. But the big difference you miss is that Islam has a much bigger and more comprehensive objective which is anathema to western civilization. This oft repeated statement of purpose from the Quran to present day leaders is rejected in toto by western progressives. That is among the many reasons I believe your ideology is harmful to me and my progeny.
And in your 1252pm you cite the Gospels of Thomas in your interpretation of Christianity. Please recall that those gospels, among many others, never made it into the Christian canon, and were specifically expelled by the Council at Carthage when they codified the Christian Bible.
There is no symmetry in today’s war with Islam – the west continues to fight that civilization at our margins in an ineffective reactive mode, while allowing Islam and other cultures to hollow out its core values, traditions, and social contracts.

You might want to ask the people of the Iberian peninsula, Constantinople, or Vienna about that. In recent history, the power vacuum left by a collapsed Ottoman Empire is likely the primary driver.
In any case, long term wars between cultures aren’t a very good place to apply the morality that individuals might feel towards each other. People in the mass have their own logic.
In the final analysis, at some points in time I suppose everyone has to choose up sides. Just because you do not take an interest in clashes between civilizations doesn’t mean clashes won’t take an interest in you.

I’m shocked no one has mentioned the invasion and centuries long occupation of what is now Spain by Arab Moslems, including the Emirate, later Caliphate, of Córdoba.
From the wiki: “The indigenous Christian Mozarab majority were Catholic Christians of the Visigothic rite, who spoke a variant of Latin close to Spanish, Portuguese or Catalan with an Arabic influence. The Mozarabs comprised the lower strata of society, heavily taxed with few civil rights, and were culturally influenced by the Muslims.
Ethnic Arabs occupied the top of the social hierarchy; Muslims had a higher social standing than Jews, who had a higher social standing than Christians. Christians and Jews were considered dhimmis, required to pay jizya (a tax for the wars against Christian kingdoms in the north). The word of a Muslim was valued more than that of a Christian or Jew in court, and some offenses were harshly punished when a Jew or Christian was the perpetrator against a Muslim; the same offenses were permitted when the perpetrator was a Muslim and the victim a non-Muslim.”

Some things haven’t changed but Jews have obviously lost standing…

Since World War I, Lebanon was a nice place. Beruit was called the Paris of the Medetranin Sea. Then the PLO moved in, starting charging the poor citizens a tax, and the place went down the tubes. Hmmm. Name one place that improved when the PLO went there in exile. I know, I know, it is all the Westerners’ fault.
In today’s language, Mohammed would be labeled a war lord like Boko Harem , a murderer, a liar (like Hilter to Chamberlain) a child exploiter, a slave taker, and a terrorist. Had some issues too. Like who is so desperate he would marry a ten year old girl? What, he couldn’t find someone his own size to marry?
Pushing all the history aside, look at the ragheads today.
