Free speech again on the progressives’ chopping block.  The Left is ever busy to squelch the First Amendment in America since they have no counterarguments against liberty, constitutionalism, fiscal prudency, constitutionalism, etc that can stand in a forum of the even mildly read voter.  Their solution du jour is to start branding anti-Left political speech as “hurtful”, and then seek to broaden legal remedies they have already emplaced to stop such speech under the categories of ‘hurtful racism’, ‘hurtful homophobia’, and so on.  As John O’Sullivan points out (here), the new category will claim that ‘offensive’ speech will also be deemed ‘hurtful’, and banned accordingly.  People promoting this are not stupid, but evil? Yes!  Another paean to the Great Divide.

Quarantining has a long and successful history in the US.  Peggy Noonan reminds us of that (here) as she recounts her great-aunt’s Atlantic crossing to Ellis Island –

On a bookshelf in my home in a glass-and-brass frame I keep my great-aunt’s Ellis Island health card. It’s cardboard, about as big as your hand. She wore it on her coat during her nine-day journey from Ireland. Every day the ship’s surgeon (possibly brusquely, probably officiously) examined her for signs of acute or long-term illness. The card noted her details—immigrant, steerage, age about 20—and other facts. SS California out of Londonderry, 1909, Mary Jane Byrne, last residence Glenties. On the back it says, “Keep this Card to avoid detention at Quarantine and in Railroads in the United States.” If she failed the physicals she would be held at Ellis Island or sent back. There’s a little notch to mark each day the doctor found her healthy. In the end there were nine.

By the time of the great post-WW2 migrations the US government got much smarter when ‘screening’ and quarantining immigrants.  As I recount in a couple of ‘My Story’ pieces (here and here), the screening of immigrants during 1949-51 involved a quarantine in Germany where we were kept locked up for weeks at former German military bases behind barbed wire while being examined daily for anything bad that might have been cooking in our bodies.  The process was unquestionably a wise one given the untreatable infectious diseases of the time.  And it continues to be a wise policy today, albeit still rejected by the ruling regime on political grounds, given the infectious diseases that we can’t successfully treat today.

[2nov14 update]   Our 'NO on S' was stolen on Friday from Cement Hill Road.  It seems the election sign stealing scumbags are particularly busy on the medical marijuana issue.  We put up a new one yesterday.  Russ Steele has more on this here.

[3nov14 update]  The meteorological mavens at the NOAA's National Weather Service reported on NPR this morning that California's chances for above normal rainfall in November were a bit over 30%.  Then with equal confidence in their voice the meteorologist went on to say that the chances for near normal rainfall were around 33%.  And no one cracked a smile or recognized that the weather guys don't have a clue about rainfall in November.  They just described a flat probability distribution which is the probabilistic definition of total ignorance.  But hey, no one does numbers any more.  It's the authoritative sound that counts to keep us sheeple content that they are cared for by another government agency.  Now, you wanna talk about climate change?

The only thing that is disingenuous in most of your opinions on such topics is that you pretend it doesn’t happen in every ideological circle.
For the record I support Rush Limbaugh freedom of speech, just not on public airwaves. He can stand on the corner all he wants spewing out his bigotry and lies.
“And it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion…” Senator Obama 2008
Was the right supportive of candidate Obama freedom of speech? Not even close.
Another example of right wing intolerance of freedom of speech.

“We’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.”
“In 2003, the female country band, The Dixie Chicks, are at the top of their game being one of the most successful bands of all time. However with the US invasion of Iraq about to begin over frustrated worldwide objections about this needless war, one of the Chick vents off the cuff in concert about being ashamed of US President George W. Bush.
This statement sparks a firestorm of organized and personal right wing attacks against the Chicks for daring to think they have the right to express a negative personal opinion about the President. This film covers the band’s effort to ride out the turmoil that would leave their careers under a cloud, but would eventually give them a opportunity to grow as great artists who bow to no one.”

Before you guys go apeshit over the public air wave statement, Rush can say what he wants on public airwaves but should not be able to have a FCC license approved show to use the public airwaves to spew out bigotry and lies. There has to be accountability involved using OUR air waves.
Where you guys fall from reality is the tools or medium of free speech being intertwined with the free speech itself. Money is not speech, money is a tool to amplify free speech. Public Airwaves aren’t free speech they are a medium to amplify free speech that is supposed to be controlled and regulated by the people not advertising dollars.

Ben – let’s look at the examples you serve up.
Dixie Chicks: there was no attempt to use any arm of the govt to silence them. The public is free to shun or boycott them if they wish. The DCs were free to continue touring and make recordings. Fail.
Obama: “Was the right supportive of candidate Obama freedom of speech? Not even close.” Actually it was Obama that wanted that bit of speech silenced. It was the conservatives that made sure you heard about the ‘clingers’. It would be nice of you to give an example of some arm of govt silencing Obama or any conservative trying to have that happen. So far – Fail.
Saying that you support Limbaugh’s freedom of speech but that you want him taken off the air is absurd. The airways don’t belong just to you. Everyone has a right to be heard unless they incite violence.
It’s easy to say Rush is a liar because you don’t like his views, but you might give some examples of Rush deliberately trying to deceive his listeners.
Here’s a great example of R Maddow deliberately lying about a Fox business news segment with Varney. Varney was quoting from a article from the WSJ and discussed the issue from both sides, clearly coming to the conclusion that was the exact opposite of what Maddow claimed.
    http://www.mediaite.com/tv/rachel-maddow-dings-fox-for-blaming-obama-for-low-gas-prices/
This isn’t the only time she’s been caught making things up. Should she be yanked off the air? Ah, but she’s on your side, so she can lie all she wants to.
Most of the left does not want freedom of speech or even freedom of thought.
They want only their views heard.

BenE 1247pm – I don’t think it is we guys up here “going apeshit” at all. The realization of the progressives’ longterm program to silence their opposition is well known, and has been so by tens of millions of Americans for at least two generations. (After all, this phenomenon of the radical Left is periodically covered by the world’s leading newspapers like the WSJ and even center-left Economist.) Isn’t trying to ascribe it again to a remote and radical minority becoming tiresome, even to you?
I fully agree with ScottO’s 208pm response. Ben, but here’s the main point – what you have never been able to discern is the difference between being critical of the ideas expressed in someone’s free speech, and attempting to stifle that kind of speech altogether. I do realize that it is one of the weaknesses of the liberal mind (and have so covered it in RR’s Liberal Mind category) when it tries to analyze such a question, it just doesn’t seem to work, and we wind up speaking past each other.

Ben Emery is a great example of the left regarding free speech. Rush can have it but only where Ben wants it. Dixie Chicks spew crap and the public doesn’t come to their concerts. We did not ask the government to shut them up. But as I recall when Rush told the truth about that sex tart wanting us to pay for her birth control, Ben and the loons wanted Rush off the air and went after his sponsors. Regarding college campii. We on the right and the students on campus from the right are constantly shut out by Ben’s pals from the left on campus. His buddies steal and burn conservative student newspapers all the time! They throw pies in Ann Coulters face and shout down speakers they don’t like as they did with one of our generals. Conservatives don’t so that at all. Rather we want more speech to counter speech. Ben says Rush lies, well Ben, give us those lies so we can see them. And don’t use Media Matters or Daily Kos.
The problem is that Ben Emery and his pals are the new version of the old school of propagandists from the Stalinist era and even Goebbels. We on the right will meet you on any op-ed page, any radio debate or TV show you want and we will defeat your attempts to squelch free speech in this country.
Oh, and Ben Emery, Bill Maher is now a target of those on the left for actually speaking the truth about Muslims and their propensity to terror and murder. Your Berkley students!

Those who want to limit others viewpoints come to your blog to discuss. Hmmmm….isn’t it wonderful there is such a place where they (we) can? And Scott you’re so right concerning the interesting and funny Rush Limbaugh. If I don’t like listening to someone on the media I don’t, but who the heck am I to think I have a right to dictate to others. Many opinions give us a liberal education that grows with personal experience. Live, pay attention and maybe learn something along the way.

“The realization of the progressives’ longterm program to silence their opposition is well known, and has been so by tens of millions of Americans for at least two generations.”
Do you make this stuff up or is their some think tank that spreads this bunk on the internet? Bandwagon, glittering generalities, and at least two or three other techniques are present, yet I see it as another example of classic Karl Rovian propaganda expertly administered for consumption and propagation.. That is to say that whatever skullduggery the right is up to, they cover their tracks by accusing the left of doing the exact same thing. 1) Voter Fraud: the right accuses the left of voter fraud (with no factual evidence) to deflect attention from the Diebold voting machine scam while implementing policies (voter ID laws, reduced early voting, voter roll purges, a Republican appointed supreme Court majority weakening the voter rights act) with the net result of disenfranchising millions of poor people who usually vote for democratic candidates. 2) Liberal media bias: Attacking media for a liberal bias creates deniability on any number of fronts while at the same time media ownership laws are changed allowing a few very large conglomerates to buy up a large portion of the nations’ media outlets with the net result of shifting the center of the national dialogue three clicks to the right while screaming foul on the left. Remember it was Nixon who created the Environmental Protection Agency. If someone like Romney were elected they would further dismantle if not eliminate the EPA.
    3) And now we have a long term conspiracy by the left trying to silence the right; just as the aforementioned Republican appointed Supreme Court rules that money is free speech and corporations are persons basically selling free speech to the highest bidders and silencing everyone else.
Good one George. Way to pass on the “real dirt” on those damn progressives for trying to destroy the Amerika conservatives know and love.

And I would really like to see evidence of the Right “silencing everyone else.” But the Left’s initiatives and exhortations to do just that are in the news daily. You can start right here in NC with the multi-year and constant call to get me off the air, and also shut down RR. Free speech? Well, commercial speech is neither free speech nor free, but I started right off the bat with going off topic.
Back on topic, the Progress/Marxist mindset is to squelch free speech of All contrary views, not just merely disagree or critique in a critical manner..
As far as I can tell, the only difference between Obama when he went to Berlin and drew a crowd of 200,000 and Adolph Hitler is that Hitler drew much bigger crowds. The liberal Marxist mindset is that of the brown shirts. They even try this bogus argument there should be free speech for others as long as they (the Brownshirts) get equal time, equal exposure, and a equally as large of an audience. Bogus because the Marxists use the ploy with the intent of diminishing the opposition’s exposure and bull horn.
Just look how BubbaBubba went ape when the State of Jefferson folks gathered at a local park with permission, authorization, and permits in hand. And the Tea Party dared to have a get together at the same park in the past. Despite the fact the liberals are free to pay the piper as often as they want at the same park, Bubba was not to be satisfied because there was not equal time. His idea of free speech is equal time, something not found anywhere in the annuals of the Federalists papers, the Declaration of Independence (independence from the Brownshirts), the Constitution, nor the irritating First Amendment. Free speech is always under assault by those self appointed controllers of every thought, word, and action. A miserable lot the Brownshirts are.

Hate speech vs free speech vs offensive speech. I understand every aspect of the hostile work environment laws and spirit of the law. Don’t matter if was unintentional or not, whether offensive or not, but how others take it. That is the workplace. No problem with that from me, even after hours with co-workers doing the bar-b-que thang, the hostile work environment laws stifle what one says. Even at the hotel on a business trip. Still, no problem with that cause money talks and bull pucky walks. I once refused to help a client because of his anger. The surprised client asked where the hell I was going. I replied that his profanity has created a hostile work environment for me (at his own house!), and go find another provider to meet your needs, lol. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
But what really bothers me is this relentless march of proper speech/thought and it’s daily assault on folks from sea to shining sea. Stories of a 8 year old school boy kissing a young school girl arrested for sexual battery. Cities like Boulder, Co making up local ordinances that it is not “Boulder Friendly” to call someone a “fruit”.
Yes, we all want to protect our children for bullies, hurtful words and taunting from others. But, do the speech Nazis consider all of us their children? Society has a way of policing free speech/offensive speech. Consider the use of the N word. Don’t like these restrictions coming down from the Marxist Elitists (the progressive 1%ers). I prefer society give the thumbs up or thumbs down to speech regulations as set forth in the 1st Amendment, not some faceless bureaucrat in government straight out of the world of academia.

You ever hear of someone on the Right trying to shut down a progressive blog or commentary or radio program —
How about Air America? It went down after large corporations advised their advertising agencies to pull ads on stations that ran AA shows. Stations pulled the shows rather than lose advertising revenue and AA folded. That is the left’s claim. The right claims the lack of listeners caused the pullback of advertising the led to AAs demise. So we have two conflicting arguments as to why Air America folded.
As for providing links: We both know that is a waste of time and energy. For every story there is a counter story with its own set of “facts” somewhere out there to prove any and all points of view. Otherwise there would be no debate about climate change, taxing levels and job creation, pollution, or anything else. It is more of a matter of which source to believe or disbelieve and the right is going to try and disqualify the left’s sources and visa-versa. That is what the whole “bias” debate is all about.. trying to discredit contradicting “information”. You are going to label my sources as bias and I am going to do the same so there really is no point in going to all that effort. You aren’t going to believe my sources and I am not going to believe yours. The problem is that with so much information and counter information out there, it becomes next to impossible to determine what is truth and what is fiction and that determination seems to rest in the realm of political belief and a belief is just that, a belief. Beliefs can’t be proven. It is unfortunate for the planet and its inhabitants that the truth has become a political football rather than a guiding light.

JoeK 848am – Well, maybe not. The AA account is verifiable by the credibility of the services that measure listenership, and their results are a matter of record. Also, capitalists have a habit of selling collectivists the rope with which they will be hanged. Highly unlikely that such advertisers would have given up all those AA ‘ears’. Yet your argument has just innuendo by disgruntled progressives who would never admit that their message in the large has never sold, and continues to be shunned by the very people who are their ‘sound bite constituents’. That is why progressives never go synoptic but stay topical with lots of anecdotal recountings appealing to emotions to support their position. The current Measure S is archtypical of this – not a shred of evidence to support their position, only stories of individuals’ pain and suffering to be relieved by easier access to MMJ.

In the marketplace, it is all about the bottom line. If any broadcaster can’t sell advertising for a particular program, that program/show is dropped. Wonder why so many pilots are thrown onto the editing room floor? I know, I worked on a few that never aired. It is because research by the broadcaster reveals the ratings will be too low and on occasion, advertisers don’t want to be associated with the program content. it’s all about image and corporate image and keeping the workplace doors from shuttering. Proctor and Gamble and others have no problem airing Tide Detergent commercials during soap operas and who has ever seen the old Mutual of Obama’s Wild Kingdom without Lorene Green pitching Alpo dog food? Research showed old people liked the show and old people like Ben Cartwright and also have dogs. Some programs thrive on controversy, others avoid it like the Black Plague. Letters to the Broadcaster still works like a charm, even in this day and age. Threats of boycotting advertisers gets everyone’s attention, especially those who pay for the ride.
Some unfortunately still confuse commercial speech with free speech. A most surprising find even in 2014. Say what you want on a street corner or even burn Old Glory. But, you cannot say what you want involving commercial speech because of various vested interests control that and rules I am still amazed that some ignorant louts think otherwise.
The marketplace is not the marketplace of ideas. Apples and carrots.

The demise of AA was primarily due to mismanagement and financial woes. This from Alan Combs does a good job of explaining the situation. “”Because conservatives were so entrenched on heritage stations, the progressives on Air America were relegated to smaller, less powerful, under-performing signals that could not compete with their more established counterparts; certainly not without lots of promotion and time to develop, both of which were denied in most cases.”

Concerning Dr. Rebane’s update and his derogatory term “scumbags” referring to the disappearing signs due to misliscious mischief. Bad Dr. Rebane, bad.
Good grief man, get a grip on yourself. Calling political opponents scumbags is the very definition of hate speech, intolerance, and, yes, racism. You bully you. How dare you call them thieving dickless low life yellow bellied pieces of human debris “scumbags”? Haven’t we evolved beyond name calling?
Yes, I do respect your right to freedom of speech, but I am offended and troubled by your sinking down to my level. Perhaps next time you should let emotions cool before posting an update and replace the term “scumbags” with the more politically accepted “scum sucking baboon jizem”.
Now, here is a sign that rarely if ever gets misplaced.
funny pics of sign no warning shots
Had an old sign that read “Trespassers will be Violated” hung proudly and unmolested for years until old age decay and a storm finally took it down. Done fell apart. Was always partial to that sign I made in high school wood shop. Those were the days you learned in school from excellent instructors. Even got an A, but I digress.

BillT 102pm – Appropriate criticism duly noted. Will now search for the misplaced ‘grip on myself’ that should still be around here somewhere.

Gotta love the lefties. Joe admits he won’t look at at any facts that don’t support his views and offers none for us to see. Voter suppression? Let’s see- how many thousands of dollars does a private citizen have to pay in order to exercise their Constitutional rights in NYC? Doesn’t bother the lefties one bit. It’s not a right they care about. Have to reach into your pocket to pull out your ID in order to vote? The left goes bananas. Joe and Ben – please give us a list of the folks that can’t vote because they are physically unable to obtain an ID.

Now what does Joe the K and the lefties say?
    http://www.kob.com/article/stories/S3607682.shtml#.VFcBfP6ZilM
Voter ID would have prevented this.
“Shearer said the fraudulent voter’s vote has already gone through a tabulator and cannot be identified or separated from all the legitimate ballots in the machine.”
Isn’t that swell? Not only can they not stop fraud voting, but they allow the fraud vote to stand.

The winter of 2013-2014 caught the wizards of NOAA by surprise according to Joseph D’leo, a highly respected forecaster.
Most forecasters including NOAA, the media and public, were caught by surprise. The arctic air pushed the grid to the brink of failure and led to supply issues and resulting price spikes for
other sources of energy stressing homeowners and businesses. Look for a repeat this winter despite NOAA and Department of Energy forecasts of a warmer winter and no repeat of the polar vortex.
I, and most all meteorologists, have a high regard for the work of our forecaster brethren at the National Weather Service. NOAA has done some great research on factors affecting longer term weather and they do a commendable job with medium range forecasts.
The government forecasters do a have a blind spot, however, with seasonal forecasts. Part of the reason, a former NOAA Climate Prediction Center Director once told me in 2003, was due to pressure from academia only to use El Ninos and La Ninas with an politically driven adjustment for long term warming trends (ignoring the fact they have been non-existent for almost two decades).

So, NOAA forecasts are political not based on science. Duh!!

Scott, not sure why “lefties” should speak to the alleged Rio Arriba fraud. Could a clerk at the county have made a mistake? Do New Mexicans get three days to vote in elections?
But the best part of the article is this: “Rio Arriba County also fell under scrutiny just two years ago when campaign workers were caught offering alchol (sic) to voters.” Now, that’s how to make friends and influence voters!

Booze? That’s a step up from the cartons of cigs the Dems were caught handing out to the ‘volunteers’ on the voting day tour bus. I’m still waiting for my check from the Koch Bros. The lefties say it’s in the mail.

Election by fraud is the ONLY way LIBS can win. ( by any means necessary)
We have to give JoeK a “little” slack. LIB news just isn’t reporting on the election.
as for the likes of MSNBC, CNN, etc.,, it’s like ” Election?,, What election??”

Since you’re on the subject of voter fraud, you might want to check out the movements of the pharaoh of the foothills (thank you, fish) on election day.
He claims to live in Nevada City, where he is presumably registered to vote, but has an inordinate amount of interest in ballot issues of the other side of Donner Summit.
He’s expressed his support for Art Moore for Congress and has written a letter to the Sierra Sun in support of two Truckee school bonds. (I’m surprised he submitted the letter to a spawn of the evil Swift empire instead of his favorite Truckee paper, Moonshine Ink. He probably wanted to make sure somebody read it.)
I’m not saying he’s registered to vote in more than one place, but you never know. If you have any poll watchers in the Truckee area, if wouldn’t hurt for them to be on the look-out for our local know-it-all. I’m told he’s not hard to spot.

Here’s one story about it, Paul. It was common knowledge at the time this happened.

Although I see some voters want a little more:

No wonder the Dems complain about the cost of campaigning – Sheesh.
