[Everybody hear the latest about Moonbeam convening a new water resources conference so that "California can again take the lead" as it has in matters of protecting the environment, climate change, and green energy – disasters all? My (no brainer) prediction is that the state will attempt to regulate and ration ALL well water so as to create further difficulties in trying to live outside of stack & pack communities. It's all for our own good. Can everyone spell 'Agenda21'? gjr]

The root problem is government interference in the market place. If we had a true free market agriculture system, there would be no government subsides. But, once the government started messing with the market, it is play the government’s game or quit farming. Those are the only options.
Read this boast from the UDSA on the 72 billion they have invested in CA agriculture from 2009-2013, all to promote the rural economy. http://www.usda.gov/documents/California_Investments.pdf
See the government looks at it as an investment, you see is as greed on LaMalfa’s part. Other see it a CA tax dollars coming back to California. The subsides that LaMalfa gets are not stuffed in his mattress, it is spent on labor, fuel, machinery, and transportation. All that spending produces jobs in valley. That is why the USDA calls its an investment.LikeLike

Gentlemen, I really don’t know where this ag subsidy issue is going. Most certainly, given the realities, I am not willing to throw LaMalfa under the bus – the alternative is too horrendous to contemplate (‘The devil that you know, and all that’). Many of you above have outlined the realities, and I am long on record for agreeing with these. Political posturing could well be a reason for rehashing the IDENTICAL accusations and attributions of LaMalfa’s family farm business. The solutions, unpalatable as they may be to the participants, are obvious to us all.

Democrats War on Women?
Our local lefties (we know who you are, the Internet does not forget) supported this Democratic effort calling Sarah Palin dumb and stupid.
Van Jones tells Dana Loesch: Yeah, Palin had us ‘shaking in our boots’ in ‘08
In a stunning admission, Van Jones said Democrats purposefully destroyed Sarah Palin and painted her as stupid because they were ‘afraid’ after her amazing convention speech. They saw her as smart and a threat – so they made stuff up about her and destroyed her political career. Sounds an awful lot like a… war on women.LikeLike

“Thanks for confirming my observation Gregory that LaMalfa is engaged in a business that is only profitable because of taxpayer subsidies.”
Paul, it doesn’t mean that at all. It does mean that every other producer, taking the money, would be able to sell at a lower price and will increase production until LaMalfa Farms cannot sell any product at a profit. If all are subject to the same market, only the most inefficient producers would be unable to raise prices to, on average, the point at which it is profitable and a wee bit more. The better farmers with the better suited land will make the most.
At least that’s my best 1st or 2nd semester Econ take on it. YMMV.
It’s akin to Thomas Jefferson and the plantation slave economy of his time, which (surprise!) in the old South was initially based on rice, not cotton.LikeLike

Russ 502pm – Good find. As I have pointed out here, there is nothing below the capability of that communist Van Jones. The sadness is that Democrats fall in line after the pronouncements of that former member of Obama’s administration. Yes, that indeed is the real war on women.
Paul 502pm – Paul, that the LaMalfa family farm is dependent on their farm subsidies has long been determined here and repeatedly discussed (see again Gregory’s 511pm). You seem to be circling this point again and again like a Sufi Dervish. I don’t want to inhibit your consuming interest in this matter; and if others are still being stimulated by these revisitations, then by all means continue. But in the event you do detect some waning attention, perhaps we can give your LaMalfa Subsidy Sonnet a number, say, 437. Then when the urge to pay another visit becomes invincible, you can just punch in 437 into the comment box and be done with it, all in the secure comfort of knowing that you have made your point, and once more laid down the gauntlet at the feet of the philistines 😉LikeLike

Good question Todd. I don’t have access to his tax returns and the question is irrelevant. The fact is that his family has received over 4 million in taxpayer subsidies from New Deal programs started by Roosevelt in 1935.LikeLike

Poor Paul.. When a Repub. receives a subsidy he tries to make it sound criminal.
Yet not a peep about a LIB receiving the same, It’s OK when a LIB does it…
BTW.. isn’t your gig on KVMR “subsidized”? ( Just ask’n…) If so, you got no room to talk.LikeLike

Paul – you have run this into the ground. Never have you espoused what the La Malfa family is supposed to do. They just want to grow rice. They’re farmers. They didn’t start the crop subsidy program and they don’t run it. Doug is on record as being in favor to end the subsidies. You have already admitted you don’t have the all of the facts concerning this issue. I would think a reasonable person would gather the facts first and then come to a conclusion. If you want to make the point that the La Malfa family is existing on govt money, and is not a net provider to the govt, provide us with the facts. I’m waiting.

Funny how Paul Emery claims the jurisdiction on what is relevant or not. Paul, you cannot speak of subsidies as long as you receive them too. Your radio station receives public money and public grants. No one is pure, not even you. You grab on like a junk yard dog just like you have with your Bush derangement syndrome. No one is pure and the LaMalfa’s have played by the rules so good luck in your jihad.
I remember you libs telling all of us how Clinton’s sexcapades were his personal life and as long as he did his job then no problem. As long as Clinton was good on abortion the women’s libbers were OK with him screwing a 19 year old in the white house ante room. You just have a bias. Too funny!LikeLike

I have no problem with subsidies. My point is that George has set up high and mighty standards as to how wonderful Conservates or the Right are compared to Liberals and the Left. (He likes to speak in simplistic generalities which is OK with me since it makes discussion so simple)
My observation is that when a LaMalfa type comes around who is profiting like a suckling pig from taxpayer subsidies, as long as they are Republican they get a pass from the Rebane’s of this blog. You’d better believe it that if Heidi Hall were subsidized by taxpayers like the LaMalfa family he’d be on it like flies on poop.LikeLike

Looks like all of us who said perhaps we should wait for th facts of the Ferguson shooting were prophetic. If the “leaks” from the Grand Jury are truthful, it appears there will be no indictment of the cop. Watching the tube and the interviews with the “pastors” of Ferguson, they seem to be unable to have an open mind about the facts. Their over the top in their defense of the “gentle giant” and derision of the cop. So, expect more riots and the destruction of property./

Paul Emery, I think George has defended his position just fine here and your position is also fine. I have supported farm subsidies as a way to keep prices even for the consumer. Since only 50% of the people in America pay Federal Income taxes, that means the rich are paying most and out of their hard work, the poor and the farmers get a stipend. The price of food would skyrocket and the poor would be affected most. Since the rich pay the taxes anyway, I would expect you would support that. I am sure you support the grants and bond monies for SYRCL and their ilk. Heck, no food there for the poor. Hey Paul, what is the budget for the Tahoe National Forest?

I do enjoy watching you use it to axe grind about a politician with whom you disagree. How bout…”lets start winding down agricultural subsidies over the next five years…for everybody?” I don’t think you would hear any complaints from the board about that.
If I were to dig enough I’m sure I could find a politician of whom you approve who receives an unearned government subsidy of some kind. I’m curious if you would be so aggressive in that instance.LikeLike

Todd, of course there will be rioting and mayhem in the streets. The outcome is not going according to the script. Heck, when the local CNN tv station reported on the news about the autopsy leaks, the locals went over to the station and smashed the windows and have a jolly good time destroying the place. Mind you, CNN did not break the story or leak the information, just reported on it.
Thought we wanted the facts and get to the bottom of this. If so, President Obama and Eric Holder should say they are seeking the truth. Justice is blind, but nooooo. Holder is upset and exasperated by the leaks and no way will this Justice department let it go, especially before an election. Obama should call for calm and Holder lay out the facts and stop conveniently throwing the cop under the bus until the investigation is complete ( if ever).
In other news closer to home, this one was a no brainer.

No Paul, not even close. It would again be a level playing field and prices to rice buyers would be a bit higher because all would have higher costs. They could expect to sell less and would probably choose to plant less acreage, but there’s no reason to think they’d all be bankrupt.LikeLike

No Paul, that is not all you are contenting. You are trying to make the point that – again, in your own words – “My observation is that when a LaMalfa type comes around who is profiting like a suckling pig from taxpayer subsidies, as long as they are Republican they get a pass from the Rebane’s of this blog.”
Clearly you are contending that there is hypocrisy here. You are also conflating what the family gets vs what he gets. You have admitted you do not have the numbers on what the La Malfa family have contributed towards society and the govt. If they have paid more in taxes over the years than they have received, then they certainly are not sucking off the govt teat. We don’t know what they would make otherwise in a free market because there is no free market. If you think $4 million is ‘a lot of money’ consider that against the trillions poured down the rat holes of endless and growing free entitlements to generations of non-producers who make no effort what ever to become productive members of society. One gang banger can suck up millions in tax dollars over a life time of crime and indolence.
There are all sorts of things folks don’t like about doing business in this country. But we have to play by the rules and try to change what is wrong through legislative means. You can help to elect La Malfa and Tom McClintock and other free market politicians at the state and local level and we can have a free market economy.LikeLike

I would like to see Paul Emery do an in depth article on Dianne Feinstein and her husbands company. Appears that he has been the recipient of millions of dollars of taxpayers money and she has voted on land transfers and many other things that have befitted them. I think it is Catellus? Anyway, Paul Emery would have more credibility on these issues if he had some balance in his investigations and reporting.

“You can help to elect La Malfa and Tom McClintock and other free market politicians at the state and local level and we can have a free market economy.”
Free market politicians don’t fill their belly with taxpayer subsidies designed to keep their failing businesses afloat. If there is ever a definition of hypocrisy it would use LaMalfa as a poster boy “free market” advocate. What a hoot (to quote Todd)LikeLike
-
“Free market politicians don’t fill their belly with taxpayer subsidies designed to keep their failing businesses afloat.”
Paul… remind me… your formal education didn’t go past high school? Your economic and political knowledge is frighteningly limited and simplistic. The patron saint of the Democratic Part, the blessed FDR, oversaw the enactment of the Father Knows Best agricultural price management and support system we have in place. Wheat, corn, soybeans, rice, and cotton, which account for 90% of all the subsidies, were profitably grown before the New Deal, and could be profitably grown if repealed. What won’t happen is someone deciding to try to sell outside the rules or accepting the money all their competitors get. In short, it’s a guaranteed loser to pay the same taxes and be the only one to not get the money kicked back in subsidies, and, more importantly, even if the LaMalfa family did what you demand, you still wouldn’t vote for him or give them a fair shake in your news.LikeLike
-
One more time. Subsidies for any sector of society become a commons. Commons once established and consumed become a mandatory part of that sector’s life in the sense that anyone unilaterally withdrawing from consuming the commons gets unilaterally punished. This is most apparent in the commercial sectors that ‘enjoy’ subsidies.
The real (hidden) purpose of commercial subsidies, those that unite the enterprises which lobby for their establishment, is limiting competition for the receivers of such subsidies. Why? Because the subsidized businesses are ‘financially tuned’ to operate in a subsidized environment. However, a new business entering the subsidized sector has to jump through hoops to qualify for such subsidies. And they have to conduct their businesses without benefit of subsidies and therefore at a disadvantage in the marketplace while such jumping is going on. Not everyone can be sufficiently financed to operate until their subsidies kick in. In that manner subsidies insidiously create cartels favoring early receivers of such govt monies.LikeLike

We gave him a fair shake in the news by broadcasting the entire debate from the Rood Center. I have tried in the past to do interviews with him but received no response from his office. Tom McClintock is much different He appears on our airways several times a year.LikeLike
