BradC 1056am – do you really think that such hyperbolic attribution of Walt’s thinking 1) is correct, and 2) contributes to your debate?

George 1171am,
“Accidents can happen anywhere, to anyone, no matter HOW well trained, or precautions exist. Sh*& happens.
How bout all the youngsters down at the S. Yuba? We lose at least one a year in those dangerous waters. Yet that doesn’t stop parents from taking their kids there.
Nice try Brad. Just because a gun happens to be involved. There there are those parents that think it’s OK to let a child drive an ATV, and people wind up dead.
Pick your activity. things happen.

My response seems about par for the course. Maybe Walt can tell us where, or if, we should draw the line.LikeLike

I think your outrage should be directed at the murders in Chicago. Every weekend a whole lot of black men kill each other. Or don’t you care about black men?

“Don’t want that nanny state telling parents they are endangering their children letting them play with automatic weapons while supervised by “weekend warrior” range instructors.”
I don’t have a particular problem with, for example, legislation binding owners of automatic weapons to not providing supervised use of the weapon to someone under the age of, say, 16, which is the age we allow them to fly airplanes solo, unless the barrel is physically restrained from pointing uprange. I do have a problem with the outrage borne of ignorance and irrational hate of firearms and their owners.
Fatalities of staff and users at ranges is nearly zero, despite the inherent lethality of firearms, because they really are safety oriented, and everyone in the business has already taken note of the problems with this sad affair and moved to fix the problem.
It should also be noted for those of you without a clue that the cartridge the Uzi fired, 9mm, is about equivalent to a standard police .38 round, and has been around for about a century (checking, 112 years). It’s a handgun bullet, not a magic high powered military rifle round, that is reportedly used by 60% of the police departments in the US.

Would I spring $100 to have my 9 year old (set the wayback machine to 2008) fire an Uzi? Not a chance.LikeLike

Time to end Burning man. There has been a fatality there. ( use the same knee jerk reactionary rhetoric as the gun grabbers)

“…tell us where, or if, we should draw the line.”
Yes, lines should be drawn. They should be drawn by the children’s parents rather than by government.
Children and the circumstances in which they live vary greatly so parents should be free to raise their children as they see fit. As always, though, freedom comes with responsibility and if parents fail to be responsible there should be consequences. In the case of the child shooting the range instructor I would have no problem with manslaughter charges against the parent(s).
What we do not need, in my opinion, is still another one-size-fits-none solution in the form of still another legislated restriction.LikeLike

MRK, I think by long established doctrine of in loco parentis, the one responsible was the deceased instructor, who was also the adult in control of the weapon, or at least the adult who was supposed to be in control of the weapon.
Note my earlier suggestion does not bind private parties.
In any case, by the even older guidance to not kill your customers or employees, the ranges providing that experience are all modifying their guidelines as we type.LikeLike

Uzis walk to the left for those unprepared. The instructor should of stood on the right. Tragic, avoidable mistake. For any Monday Morning Quarterback (there are numerous), any attempt to grab the barrel or control the muzzle is ludicrous. Happens too quick and believe you me, an Uzi’s barbell will burn your hand ASAP. Them tips get friggen hot. Once slung a couple of Uzis I just shot off about 100 rounds each with and threw them over my shoulder. Burned the begeezes out of my inner upper arm on the tender side near the armpit as I was careless in tossing them on the shoulder. Won’t do that again….even us “experienced” ones make tenderfoot mistakes. And they were empty to boot, haha.
Love Uzis. They are lightweight, small, easy to conceal under a coat, fast, pretty accurate, and very very cute. But, Dr. Rebane is correct. The proper hand on the Uzi above the trigger could have guided the walking, put standing on the right of the girl would have been better and not spoiled her fun day. Wish I still had those Uzis and macs, but moved on to bigger toys. They sure are cute little buggers, and mean as a baby rattler. A must for a good bodyguard and fits nicely in a quick open briefcase.LikeLike
