[This is the transcript of my regular KVMR commentary broadcast early on 11 June 2014 due to this weekend’s bluegrass festival which will dominate this Friday's air time.]

As the VA healthcare scandal builds, it is putting on exhibit the disaster that Obamacare will deliver to the doorstep of every American.  As with so many other big government programs, Obamacare will continue to not deliver on a single promise made during the campaign of lies used to pitch the ignorant.  We recall that it was cobbled together by liberal interest groups and finally shoved through Congress in the dead of night with only Democrat support.

Today the VA scandal demonstrates how government bureaucrats are incentivized by bonus policies to toady to their superiors, and victimize the veterans they are paid to serve.  The methods used can be understood by any interested citizen, and their use is not limited to the VA.  In fact such practices are common throughout all branches of government that systematically separate performance and reward.  Yale Emeritus Professor Peter Schutz has studied and reports on such endemic failures of governments in his just published ‘Why Government Fails So Often’.

The current poster child of such failures is the VA in how it has worked its healthcare scam.  A study of that massive failure is imperative so that we can recognize it in other government departments, and most importantly see it coming as Obamacare is exposed over the next two or three years.

Here’s how the VA runs and rations its healthcare services.  To begin with it operates two ques (I have never liked the idiotic long spelling ‘queue’) – one is the real que with long wait times, and the other is the shortened fake one with handpicked patients that gets reported.  VA’s management and many workers are spiffed (or receive bonuses) for not making waves and keeping the politicians in Washington safe.  The VA’s annual lump sum budget is about $160B which it allocates internally and runs an organization that employs over 300K government workers.  Those numbers are second only to the entire Department of Defense.

The VA is run so poorly that they cannot afford to give enough vouchers to veterans so they can get timely and adequate healthcare in the private sector.  That would require restructuring the remainder of the VA, expose decades of mismanagement, and make plenty of waves in Washington.  Instead, when death and infection rates began to soar in 2011, the VA simply stopped sending remediation teams to their bad hospitals.  Also doing away with those reports kept people inside the Beltway in the dark for another couple of years. (more here)

The crack in the VA’s façade came with last fall’s report of 40 veterans dying while languishing in the hidden patient que of the Phoenix VA hospital.  This finally brought attention to the kind of service ailing veterans have been getting for more years than people can count.  Following this revelation the investigation has expanded and discovered that the dual waiting lines bamboozle is standard practice in over 70% of the country’s VA hospitals.  The scandal has now grown so large that a polarized Congress is finally passing a bipartisan bill that would enforce the issue of such vouchers, and ease the firing of corrupt and incompetent managers. (more here)

Finally, there is an unasked question that I would like to leave with you.  Consider that there have been at least 90 VA hospital management teams forwarding fraudulent wait que reports for years, thereby maintaining the rotten status quo.  These people knew they were playing with veterans’ lives with these sham reports telling VA headquarters that they were delivering adequate services.  All this time none of them had the character or guts to blow the whistle so that something could have been done sooner than later to save the veterans.  In order to look good, qualify for bonuses, and cause no ripples in Washington, these civil servants, by the hundreds across the country, treated their patients as if they were cheap potted plants to be shuffled as their careers demanded.

The real question is ‘What kind of people would knowingly perpetrate such suffering and death on fellow Americans, and keep doing it year after year?’.  Yet today many still think that a government healthcare program serving 320 million instead of 9 million Americans, managed by the same kind of scumbags, is going to be run more efficiently.

My name is Rebane, and I also expand on this and related themes on georgerebane.com where the transcript of this commentary is posted with relevant links, and where such issues are debated extensively.  However my views are not necessarily shared by KVMR.  Thank you for listening.

What a horrible commentary. Usually I disagree with your commentaries but find nuggets of agreement. This one is pure ideology driven and very dangerous. The VA has had problem for years and many of those decades Republicans were in charge of the federal government. Both parties like to talk about supporting troops but it is only propaganda but will say the Democrats are better than Republicans on veterans issues for sure.

BenE 617am – A more careful read would reveal that nowhere did I say that “the Democrats are better than Republicans on veterans issues”. In fact I emphasized that government’s bureaucratic sleaze has been equally applied over the years on the watch of both parties. We may differ about why it finally came to a head under Obama, but that was not addressed in my commentary.
However, in case you also missed the main point, I do say that the VA’s healthcare scandal is a template for what government bureaucrats and workers will deliver under the rotten arch called Obamacare. And that legislation and assembled delivery system is indeed an incompetent ideological atrocity that is 100% the handiwork of Democrats.
So maybe there’s hope for more agreement if you made it a practice to slow down and read my commentaries more carefully before galloping off on that mighty steed of yours named, I believe, High Dudgeon.

Good ol’ Ben.. The next one to make excuses for Dear Leader. And right on time,,”It’s Bush’s fault”.
Now the morning news has it, that “O” and Co. knew full well of the VA problems, and only after it was made public, got all uptight, and faked anger over the deal.
Seems the President’s “Cabinet” is nothing more than a group of fall guys, more than willing to fall on their sward to give “O” cover, and plausible deniability.” I,,I didn’t know that,,, I,,I read about it,,, in,, in the news. I listened to your commentary on KVMR and didn’t bother to read it again. Bureaucracy isn’t unique to government and the fact that you never acknowledge private sector bureaucracy is very telling and it is worse in many cases. Have you ever had a major medical issue that had to go through private insurance didn’t want to cover?

You may think its a joke, but you’ll notice that it’s insidiously hidden if you bother to read it along with the links. I feel sorry people being taken advantage of.

Dr. Rebane, suffer me as I butt in here. Brother Ben admits to the shortcomings and failing of inept corrupt wasteful disorganized self perpetuating government institutions. But, but, but, but the private sector is worse. They do it too. I believe Ben might have a wee bit of distrust concerning the private sector. Comparing the private sector (aka evil corporations who don’t give a rat’s about me or you)to government institutions is “ideology driven and “very dangerous.” “What a horrible commentary”. You didn’t even mention Wal-Mart or some seed company one friggin time… Never mind the facts presented, you used the word sleaze referring to the VA. You never once mentioned 1,394,953,236 years of slavery nor the Fascist system of greedy CEOs in bed with bought politicians who do not represent the people. Or is t bought CEOs in bed with greedy politicians? I get confused.
    Bad Dr. Rebane bad!
Brother Ben, you are correct once again. The corrupt folks that run the VA, along with those that have money don’t give a rat’s ass about you. But, they do care about whats in your wallet.

Concerning The VA model being the template for Obamacare, one has to ask if Obamacare is so wonderful, why does the Administration keep delaying it? Not ready for Prime Time? 2014 election?
Last time at my doctor a few months ago, he told me his business has picked up because of Obamacare and he can barely handle the work load. Doc seemed burned out. He said he can only accept 1 in 10 new patients that call (if that) and he is getting a lot of calls. Upon leaving my doc’s, I told him not to burn himself out and quit skipping lunch, lol. As I approached the door, the receptionist was fielding a call all the way from West Sacramento and she was encouraging the inquirer on the other end of the phone to seek a doc closer to Sacramento. Guess the caller was going through the provider list in vain.
Not enough docs, not enough providers, but more regs. Like I really need prenatal health or adolescent dental care at my age. Fortunately for me, my employer sponsored insurance never charged more for age or sex, but if I lost that, I would have to pay for women’s health, breast exams, and kiddie pediatric stuff cause without those gems, my insurance would be classified as sub-par, definitely substandard. Already have free meat wagon rides (ambulatory service) and my kid just racked up 13k (at least!) in an out of service area hospital. Cost her 400 bucks total, which is a lot more than if she got hurt locally, which would cost 125 clams for anything under 90 days if admitted. Guess the 400 bucks was worth a week in the hospital. Food was not bad and people were dying to get in.
So, whats the template again, in case I lose my insurance? Aren’t the Dems/libs/government employees all saying I will like Obamacare when I find out what is in it?

    George,
For such an accomplished person you still have no clue that our government isn’t supposed to be separate from the people is governs, we are supposed to be the government. So every time you bash the US government you are bashing the US people and I am sick of it. I don’t support the size or scope of the US federal and many state governments at the moment. But I try to promote things that will improve our the one common thing all Americans share, our government. Where you on the other hand want to leave it to the wealthy and be damned to the rest of us. In our local elections on RR I admitted that I expect conservative representation because we live in a conservative area. You on the other hand live in a liberal/ progressive state and nation but have grown so bitter about the greatest nation on the planet was established with liberal/progressive ideals that all people should be able to live with dignity. It wasn’t established on day one but those who established our form of government gave the people the ability to create such a government through the progresive idea of a democratic republic. You see every other “civilized” government on the planet were based on oppression of average people until our revolutionary progressive founders set up something with the potential of being much different. Average men could hold office and vote for their representatives, due process, freedom of speech and religion, military cannot force themselves onto the people, privacy from the government, and so on. All very progressive ideas. All the way to the 1970’s the US expanded rights and opportunities to people in long hard fought battles, which is a perfect example of progressive ideals at work. Over the last 40 years there is a very disgusting group of people trying their hardest to move the US backwards instead of forwards. Taking opportunities away and excluding rights from American citizens. Unfortunately these people are the ones you look to for your information and facts.
Michael Anderson said something along the lines to GG of not bothering because he doesn’t respect him.
I don’t spend time any longer trying to research your ideological opinions on this blog because I don’t respect them. I don’t respect the hypocrisy of a life long dependence on government support/ contracts that fills your career while at the same time you bash it. I don’t respect the racist remarks. I don’t respect the lack of concern of US military/ defense spending going off the charts to protect corporate interests. I don’t respect your take on labor. I don’t respect the lack of compassion you have for your fellow human beings, unless they fit into your brand.
Basically I don’t respect serial ego driven hypocrites, which it appears you are one.
I tried to ignore all of this and give you the benefit of the doubt of being a decent person whom I might just disagree politically but the evidence is overwhelming that you don’t give a damn about people unless they are going to advance your immoral agenda. So take your bigoted very limited world view and shove it.
I would expect much more from a person whose family ran from the fascist during WWII era. Instead of showing how wrong the fascist were you have taken I will get others before they will get me approach to your political leanings.
Isn’t America great that I can come on your blog and bash the sh!# out of you and your neo fascist followers.

I want readers to especially note the progressive’s approach at attempting to understand only ideas that they “respect”. Which leads to the ultimate unreason – they disrespect ideas and ignore ideas without really taking the time to understand what they are. Nuff said.

I am on travel and had to compose my 649am on the run. Forgot to add that whatever government is “supposed” to be does not signify what it actually is. Our Founders left us a Constitution and multiple strong reminders that if we see government doing what it isn’t supposed to do, then as a free people it is our right, and more strongly, our duty to speak up and point to the error. Only citizens of autocracies remain quiet in the shadows when they see their governments go astray from their supposed paths. This is just another confirmation that the Left’s slippery road is always toward the total control of a society that is first and foremost compliant to the state.
Now to the notion that “our government is not supposed to be separate from the people.” That is definitely wrong, as our Founders warned us and made clear in their writings and in our seminal documents. Even Lincoln’s ‘by, for, and of the people’ does not succumb to that conclusion. The only ones to advance such an idea were the French Jacobins followed more explicitly by the communism introduced later by Marx. But the progressives attributing that to the principles of America’s founding is part and parcel of either their ignorance or hewing to Alinsky’s directions.

Hey, with this “People’s March on Baghdad” going on, it just might be a great time to invest in military industrial complex stocks. Even little ordinary folk like me can get in on the action. That is what makes this nation fantastic.
Brother Ben; concerning your magnificent list of progressive/liberal ideals and ideas, you forget to mention favoring State governments force those that have money to go solar. I see that as inherently unfair and against the equal protection clause/ideals. Why not force everybody to purchase solar. No free rides for “the people”. Mandate, require, force… be it solar panels or health care. Force them to. Opps, the Supreme Court said the Unafforable Piss Poor Care Act is a tax and you won’t go to the pokey for non compliance, so you aren’t really forced to in a literal sense. Just fined for not playing ball. Besides, IF one makes so little that they are not required to file their income tax forms for that year, then they are not required to sign up for Obamacare. THAT IS UNFAIR. Equal protection is being stomped beneath the heavy foot of the warped ideals of today’s progressive/libholes that would make our founding fathers wail aloud and enough to gag a maggot.
Nice to hear what you have to say Gentle Ben. Glad to see that you responded not reacted. See ya in the Medicaid line looking for a doctor. Its for Tiny Tim, the poor soul who has only one crutch.
