[This is the transcript of my regular KVMR commentary broadcast on 16 May 2014.]

We just heard about another manufacturer leaving Nevada County and California, heading for Texas.  KACO New Energy is a ‘green’ company that makes solar panel electronics.  Their move will relieve them of the double whammy of manufacturing here in a mountainous backwater that is also located in arguably the most business destructive state in the Union.  In the meantime the torrent of lies out of Sacramento and Washington hyping our economy grows by the day.

The latest job report is a farce when considered in light of the record reduction in the country’s workforce, now down to 62.8%.  If you remember your fractions from grade school, and apparently most people in the country don’t, then you know that any such quantity can be increased by making the denominator shrink.  And that’s where we put the number of people who work, including those who still believe they can find a job.  Any number of dubious new jobs you stick in the numerator will then improve the unemployment rate.

But what really puts a drag on the country’s economy is the heavy burden of regulations that in reality are an off-budget tax, a tax which the nebbishes voting for big government never think about.  The Competitive Enterprise Institute publishes a yearly update on regulations titled ‘Ten Thousand Commandments: An Annual Snapshot of the Federal Regulatory State’.  In it the authors point out again and again the several ways government raises monies it wants to spend – direct taxation, borrowing that increases the national debt, printing money out of thin air, and indirect taxation through its ever growing regulatory labyrinth.

The latter is the invisible tax that is neither seen nor debated.  Nevertheless its effects are still felt, but even then they are misconstrued by Main Street.  In that way elected politicians duck responsibility for their centrally planned programs, shifting any blame quietly onto the federal government’s bureaus and agencies.  Wrap your mind around this – in 2013 compliance with federal regulations cost Americans over $1.8T.  The federal government’s outlays of over $3.5T now account for 31% of the country’s economy, and that is before the full costs of Obamacare kick in.  Add to that the states’ and local governments’ share, and all layers of government account for almost half the spending that makes up our GDP.  What we need to keep in mind is that these monies come as a drag on the productive sectors of our economy – private sector workers and business people doing their best to generate the wealth, attempting to keep the whole thing above water.

Our regulatory compliance costs total more than the entire GDPs of countries like Canada and Australia.  We have to hire legions of lawyers to continually study, interpret, and argue both sides of cases arising from the 80,000 pages in the federal register that contain over 87,000 rules – unfortunately I don’t have time to go into the equivalent amounts of additional state and local regulations.  The federal regulatory burden alone amounts to almost $15,000 per household annually.  To provide some perspective, this eats up 23% of the average household’s income, and 29% of its spendable budget.  CEI reports that for the average American household the regulatory costs exceed “every item in the household budget except housing – more than healthcare, food, transportation, entertainment, apparel, services, and savings.”

Small businesses suffer most.  That is the sector that creates and maintains most of the jobs that keep this country afloat.  But small businesses are hit particularly hard by regulatory costs and pay more per employee, averaging over $10,000 annually, than do the big corporations that average less than $8,000 per employee.

In Washington and the state houses politicians get credit for spending that buys votes.  But since they are able to dodge the true costs of their giveaways, they have no motivation to stop passing laws, each of which pumps out another seventy plus regulations that drain money from the private sector.  In the end it is we who are dumb enough to reelect these people again and again.  So which regulation happy politicians are you voting for in this election year?

My name is Rebane, and I also expand on this and related themes on georgerebane.com where the transcript of this commentary is posted with relevant links, and where such issues are debated extensively.  However my views are not necessarily shared by KVMR.  Thank you for listening.

According to this, http://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat01.pdf, the percentage of employable folks has not changed all that much.
Also, note that during the 1982-84 period, that percentage was about what is it now, and unemployment was nearing 10% which is quite a bit higher than it is now.
Regarding KACO, I would expect a rapidly growing business to have a hard time finding workers in this area. Housing prices are higher, housing is more scarce, and the place is basically a retirement community.

Oh, Brad! You know how thesis played; never let facts, historical record, or external causes interfere with ones ability to make ones predetermined ideological point.
By the way many economists are saying the reason the percentage of employable people is dropping in the US is the aging and retirement of the largest generation in American history, the baby boom.

BTW, Rebane is ranting again at KVMR — on the “news hour,” no less. He doesn’t even bother to cite his references anymore. And KVMR doesn’t hold him accountable. It just spills out.

The problem is also that when the ‘line’ is crossed the Republican and conservative establishment is not held accountable.
People in our county will prop up Richard Mack, Rafael Cruz, Tim Donnelly, Rosa Korie, Stewart Rhodes, Doyle Shamley, John McManus, William Jasper, Cliven Bundy, and Mark Meckler as ‘heroes’.
Those ‘heroes’ will propose all kinds of bizarre conspiracy theories about how government is destroying their lives and some people who feel disempowered and disposed will have a straw man to hate.
That hate will be echoed in the chamber of right wing media and web sites (like Rebane’s Ruminants).
Some poor soul will take it ‘over the line’ and bomb the Murrah federal building killing hundreds of people, or try to assassinate the head of the Tides Foundation, or kill a radio host, or bomb a USFS office.
And everyone will say, “Oh,my God how terrible!”
And someone will go on the radio and say, “The actions of this individual in no way represents the values we stand for.”
But the people who created the conditions where some sick bastard feels justified in murder will get off without having to account for their support.

How do you propose holding them accountable Steve? Shall we suppress first amendments rights….surprising coming from Uber Patriot, tax scofflaw, and noted constitutional scholar Steven Frisch.
Maybe throw that internet kill switch that everyone was talking about a while back.

This anonymous “fish” character/coward whom Rebane happily allows to comment on his blog, with his flow of personal insults, is a true idiot. He proudly shows a link to Rebane’s commentary, suggesting it is “sourced.” http://cei.org/10KC Yet this is radio commentary on KVMR.

And consider the source: The president of this outfit was formerly an officer at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Does this mean George can write off his annual “snowbird” trip to the Mercatus Scottsdale conference?
You want to quibble about the ideological perspective of the reference thats’s one thing…..to suffer from another jeffylike case of the vapors and make a false accusation is something else entirely.

Unfortunately we are doing exactly want Jeff wants, recognizing his voice from the echo chamber. The wise strategy is to ignore him and his rants, drive him nuts. Ignore him and we live in his mind rent free. If we read him and comment then we are paying the rent. If we are silent, he never knows if his targets got the message.

Ah, Fish, the anonymous, unaccountable, self loathing government wage earner who does not seem to ever work!
Never proposed limiting the fist amendment Fish, I propose holding your friends accountable by calling out bad behavior and naming it for the fascist, fear mongering and hateful lie that it is.
Sorry, not a ‘tax scofflaw’ anymore, and have not been for years, besides I never claimed to be a fucking saint, and don’t hold myself up as one.
Finally, I own the Constitution just as much as you, the Tea Party, or any other American does. I would hope every American would know and love the Constitution.
Constitutionalists….Hah! I think George would have a hard time telling the Constitution from the Sears catalogue. Todd wouldn’t even try, for him it would be any port in a storm.

Ah, Fish, the anonymous, unaccountable, self loathing government wage earner who does not seem to ever work!
Sums it up pretty well…well not the self loathing part…it’s not quite so bad as that yet. I’ll keep you posted should things change. Would be happy to do more “work”, but there is a bureaucracy and it has instituted processes and procedures that make “work” that rarest of things. Get the government to defund my agency and I’ll happily look for work elsewhere.
Richard Mack, Rafael Cruz, Tim Donnelly, Rosa Korie, Stewart Rhodes, Doyle Shamley, John McManus, William Jasper, Cliven Bundy, and Mark Meckler as ‘heroes
No friends of mine…..not really sure how one would hold any of these people “accountable”. I’m responsible for my opinions and they for theirs.
Really Steve…fascist… I know the argument tank is almost empty when you start this….. I seem to recall a sad little boy last week upbraiding George for labeling commenters as socialist…and pooh….even communist! In truth though none of the old labels really work anymore. But I guess it’s okay to fling them when you hold the “proper” opinions. Fear-mongering….? Shit, eliminate this and your side might as well just fold it’s tent……Koch Brothers anyone?
Finally, I own the Constitution just as much as you, the Tea Party, or any other American does. I would hope every American would know and love the Constitution.
Funny….I use the “constitution” argument less than anyone here (correct me if you think I’m in error) but I’m pretty sure that nowhere in the document will I find that am I required to police the thoughts and opinions of my “friends” no matter how much Steve Frisch may disagree with them,
Constitutionalists….Hah! I think George would have a hard time telling the Constitution from the Sears catalogue. Todd wouldn’t even try, for him it would be any port in a storm.
I’m sure George would have no difficulty at all examining the legislative bilge that has spewed out sewage like since the “Great Society” programs and seeing it as unconstitutional under a strict reading of the document. Truth be told it hardly matters anymore as we’ve lost the ability as a country to make these judgements….compelled to purchase health care…under a taxing authority..that for the purposes of the legislation wasn’t to be considered a tax….that started as a gutted bill in the senate. Yeah…do go on about your knowledge and love of the constitution.
    Call it societal entropy.

    4) Re: the “nowhere in the document will I find that am I required to police the thoughts and opinions of my “friends” ; you must note I never asked you to police the thoughts of others, I said I would do so to the best of my ability…..

In all the years of reading your tripe though I find you the least concerned about the Constitution. Having taken the oath to uphold the document twice I can assure the readers here that you are simply a silly man with fascist tendencies. In America! Whew, you must have no friends. Too funny.

That’s entirely possible Steve…. after a while your silliness all seems to run together. The term MEGO springs to mind.
    1) While you are anonymous I can think anything of you because there is no ‘you’ to relate to.
Does this undeniable truth require a response or did it just make you feel smart to type it?
    2) I never said Mack, et. al. were fiends of yours, so why would you assume that?
    Fiends…nice.
People in our county will prop up Richard Mack, Rafael Cruz, Tim Donnelly, Rosa Korie, Stewart Rhodes, Doyle Shamley, John McManus, William Jasper, Cliven Bundy, and Mark Meckler as ‘heroes’.
I can recall no one at Rebanes Ruminants (more cute) holding these people out as heroes. If you would like to provide evidence that this has occurred I’ll offer a retraction.
Those ‘heroes’ will propose all kinds of bizarre conspiracy theories about how government is destroying their lives and some people who feel disempowered and disposed will have a straw man to hate.
More government generally means more taxation…..taxation the power to destroy…I seem to remember someone saying. That plus the obvious and ham fisted nature of increasing government regulation on peoples lives hardly qualifies as “conspiracy theory”.
That hate will be echoed in the chamber of right wing media and web sites (like Rebane’s Ruminants).
So again the great constitutionalist intimates that discussing political matters should be curtailed because it might be considered “hate”. Well how bout this Stevie I fucking hate all the money the government wastes on it’s various and sundry dubiously constitutional programs. Under the Frisch Plan this is off limits. Can’t talk about Common Core even though some of us have kids in the system. Can’t talk about the Bundy Ranch because it might be seen as inciting violence. Can’t talk about the health care debacle because the only people who don’t think ObamaCare is the greatest thing since the blow job was invented are clearly racists who hate the president because he’s black and racists don’t gets no freedoms to speech!
Just what’s on Steves approved list?!
Some poor soul will take it ‘over the line’ and bomb the Murrah federal building killing hundreds of people, or try to assassinate the head of the Tides Foundation, or kill a radio host, or bomb a USFS office.
And everyone will say, “Oh,my God how terrible!”

If you have a solution to these types of acts that don’t involve restricting thought or speech I’m all ears Steve. I don’t recall the left falling all over themselves to issue calls for restraint when Corkins tried to shoot up the Chick-Fil-A corporate office over the gay marriage issue. As far as “killing a radio host” good to know you have such heartfelt concern for the Limbaughs, Hannitys, and Savages of the world for they are far more likely to be a target than anyone claiming to be on your side of most issues. As far as somebody bombing a USFS office…those guys fall into your existential environmental end of the world camp ….as the spate of bombings and burnings in that category are clearly the province of the lefty ecoterrorist/Earth Firster types.
But the people who created the conditions where some sick bastard feels justified in murder will get off without having to account for their support.
People are always twisting off for this reason or that Steve…. stop trying to capitalize on their actions to silence the opposition.
    3) I have stated pretty consistently that as long as George calls people he disagrees with Communists I will call him a fascist…my point of course is that as a blog host he should set standards, but if he doesn’t he should be subject to the same lack of a standards…
I’ll repeat to you what I’ve said to your fat friend on a couple of occasions…..this is the internet….there are no Marquise of Queensbury rules in effect here. You want to call George a fascist knock yourself out just don’t whine about it later.
    4) Re: the “nowhere in the document will I find that am I required to police the thoughts and opinions of my “friends” ; you must note I never asked you to police the thoughts of others, I said I would do so to the best of my ability…..
We hold idiots responsible for their idiocy by naming it.

But then why this: The problem is also that when the ‘line’ is crossed the Republican and conservative establishment is not held accountable.
Clearly a plea for action. Try not to be so blatantly disingenuous. I knew spending so much time with jeffy would be bad for you!
So perhaps you could base your critique on at least a shred of accuracy you miserable piece of…..anonymity!
    Weak literary device Steve.
But lets be clear Fish, nothing we can say would make a difference here…..it is all kabuki theater.

re stevenfrisch 1258pm – would dearly like to see evidence of my calling anyone a communist simply because I disagree with them, so that I can properly apologize. Otherwise we will have to chalk these charges to the long list of progressive character assassinations and fabrications that get aired when substantive arguments run out (or were absent from the onset).
On the more general issue of our dysfunctional Congress. It is clear from the years RR has been ‘on the air’ that our progressive readers get first whiff of many major national happenings and, most certainly, of conservative viewpoints from reading my commentaries on this blog (why else would they accuse me of having such “hard right” and “extreme” views in their perceived world?).
Among the latest one-sided reports that have gained great traction among the Left (and information-lite citizens) is that the Republicans are solely to blame for congressional gridlock. No lamestream outlet has reported that ol’ Harry has regularly killed ALL Republican legislative initiatives in the Senate, and since last July has allowed Republicans to append only NINE amendments to Democrat passed bills. So the ongoing contribution of Democrats is that Harry 1) blocks all Republican bills, 2) claims that Republicans offer nothing of their own, and 3) sit in the Senate only to oppose the sterling legislative efforts of true blue Democrats. And, oh yes, the nation’s Chief Liar is immediately on the hustings the next day decrying Republican recalcitrance.
The reason is clear; Harry doesn’t want the Republicans’ bipartisan supported legislation to reach a floor vote so that Democrats voting for it would expose the president’s lies, and embarrass everyone seeking to fundamentally change America. Just thought I’d get the word out.

Then like any liberal who is whip assed in these discussions, he cries foul and goes home to mope. I seriously think there is a mental illness involved.

If so, what will happen to the Fresno Grizzlies?
It was thought that the A’s might go after that facility/organization as they will still need to have access to players who could report to the team within the 4 hour window they have with Rivercats players.

Nice! Glad you had a good day at the yard. Giants finally snapped their Marlins jinx.

More concern trolling from a member of jeffys rabbit warren.
I just went to Rebanes blog. It may have been my first time, I don’t remember, but, I feel like I need to take a shower. The pathology over there is breathtaking. It sort of scarey that these troglodytes are walking the same earth. And is it me or does “Fish” comprise at least 80% of their BS. This is a disturbed individual not worth indulging in conversation. I’m sorry I wasted those ten minutes that I’ll never get back.
Cousin Brucie there are days days I feel a little like the shark in the original jaws. I’ve landed, metaphorical speaking, in a hunting ground filled with much lesser fish (no pun intended), bait fish like yourself and KKKrazy Doug Keachie, Big fat hyper-emotional Groupers like jeffy and Soft Headed Ben…marginally more interesting prey like Stevie and Michael….can you really blame me for fucking with you poor sorry souls just a bit. I been subjected to your overwrought lefty nitwittery for years…time to have fun with you midwits for a while.
As far as traffic percentages, there are days where I am responsible for a fair percentage of Georges traffic…..what is your FUEhrers excuse for being responsible for 80% of the traffic on his site….you would think that the “Voice of the Sierra Foothills” would have a bigger following. Shit I’ve seen him post a topic and be responsible for all the responses….makes me think his family life is …err…um….unsatisfactory.
Anyway…it’s all in good fun…and truth be told I’m starting to get bored with you middle aged ex-inner city reprobates…..nobody is putting forth much effort these days!
    See ya round the internet!

Seems to me that the entire nation has become President Obama weary. So, we dive into various topics such as immigration reform, lawlessness by Executive Order, Keystone, and other topics. Getting harder and harder to find a rabbit Obamamaniac fan these days on Left or Right blogs. Independents are the most disheartened with the whole ball of wax along with a chunk of millennials tuning out. To the younger generation the biggest disappointment with government in general and Obama in particular is the NSA scandal. Those who live and die by hand held gismos while texting someone sitting next to them feel threatened and have lost trust in government. Welcome to the real world boys and girls. This ain’t high school anymore.
So, what does this have to do with regulations? The trust factor comes to play. Our rulers in CA can’t even call a tax a tax, especially since Prop 13. I don’t mind user fees or pay as you go. If I want to spend a night at Scotts Flat Lake or visit a state park at the beach, I know I have to pay to enter. I just don’t my pocket picked for moving 3 wheelbarrows of dirt. At least burn permits are still free, knock on wood.
This trust factor of government is an underlying issue of the great divide. Our founders and I always see government as the biggest threat to the people. Once established, governments big and small grow and grow and consume insatiably like the Venus Flytrap Monster in Little Show of Horrors. “Feed me Seymour, feed me all night long.”
Of course liberals/progressives have more trust of government than Republicans, Conservatives, Independents and now millennials. And this distrust is growing among life long Democratic.
Perhaps this is why. Our masters write regulations 24/7 and read from scripts instead of serving the people. They actually feel they are the law, above the law, and the final arbitrator, thus answering to the little people is beneath them. They serve themselves and their superiors first and foremost. They write rules and regs and fund themselves through fees and permits without ever having these regs become actual law. In short, humans in government have confused authority with power. And that is the crux of our distrust.

Yup. And was down in Baghdad by the Bay this weekend doing some family stuff and thought we might catch a Giants-Twins game but the seats available required oxygen tanks so we passed. Instead went to Pier 39 for the first time (huge mistake) and now I never have to go there again. Now I get what’s been going on with the SF waterfront, what sadness. I hadn’t been there in 30 years–last time was in the Alioto days, when things were messy and stinky–and now it just looks like all the other tourist traps in America. Oh well.
