By any measure America would be seen as clinically insane by an alien observer arriving on earth.  The insanity is marbled in at all levels of society starting from the highest levels of government to the dishwasher in a small town hotel.  But the real problem is that about a third of our population is afflicted beyond redemption, and another third doesn’t really know or care what is happening around them.

The next step in granting de facto amnesty and immunity from deportation to illegal aliens is the new vote-accumulating Obama administration order that gives certain foreign nationals a pass just because they are related to an ex-GI.  The latest reported ‘heart warming’ case involves an Hispanic-American veteran who decided to marry an illegal alien, and then lobby for passing a new law that would exonerate law breakers who are/become his relatives (more here).  As usual, liberals see such a law as covering a tightly circumscribed, anecdotal circumstance that would have no spreading ripples.  But the US Code is stuffed with these kinds of laws that have become collateral damage bombshells after passage.  Starting such new dispensations for law-breakers related to vets, where do you think it would stop?  How soon will other criminals be able to plead for mitigation and/or extenuation because they are related to someone who served their country?

Dontadrian Bruce held up three fingers in a school picture signifying his jersey number on an athletic team, and was promptly expelled for the rest of the school year under the school’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy.   Totally plausible protestations of innocence (more here) didn’t do much good.  The kid’s sentence was reduced to about a month’s suspension apparently because he and everyone else should be up on the local gang signs in his town.

Things have gotten so out of hand about guns in school that kids who make an index finger gun with their hand or have half-eaten pastry that resembles the outline of a gun are kicked out of school by the bureaucratic thought police.  These worthies have thoughts that such behaviors precede the kinds of mass shootings by the insane that we have witnessed during the last decade or so.  Now Maryland and Florida have finally responded with their versions of the so-called ‘pop tart’ bills that are coursing their way through legislatures.  The hope is that when passed, these laws will reign in the zealous idiots in the schools’ administrations.  To be seen.

Our distinguished Nevada City hotelier reports that California will now require that his bartenders start wearing latex gloves when serving drinks that have a bit of vegetable matter added to them.  (Then the gloves must come off when handling the customers’ filthy lucre.)  Everyone in the state handling food will be so attired according to the new law.  The numbers of deaths and debilitations resulting from the hitherto mishandling of foodstuffs must have been massive to call for such legislation.  Oh yes, and everyone who is even remotely connected with food service in the hospitality industry – e.g. dishwashers in the kitchen – must now apply for and receive a ‘Food Handlers Certificate’ from the state of California – and that’ll be $15 please.  Of course no one has thought of the added cost and impact on productivity that this latest spate of feel good legislation will have.

This list is already very long and can be expanded indefinitely when we have tiers of underworked lamebrains (at their jobs of last resort) in the ranks of government trying to think up new ways for the state to benefit the people.  And who knows, each new law or regulation also has the possibility of expanding the public service sector because someone has to be hired to do monitoring and enforcement as the law is implemented.  After all, it’s all for the common good.

But the thought I want to leave you with, dear reader, is that there is no discernible strategy, plan, tack, … for correcting or slowing down this slide into autocratic madness.  There are even many otherwise sober and reasonable people who oppose such idiocies, but just throw up their hands and counsel going along to get along (see GATGA).  The age-old reasoning here is that it’s better to bend over today and be re-elected in hopes of then getting a backbone tomorrow.

[12mar14 update]  America’s resident mush minds have caused an explosion in deer populations, primarily east of the Mississippi.  The nation now has over 30 million deer, a hundred times more than it did in the 1800s and possibly more than ever lived on the continent.  They are busily destroying forests and crops and gardens, and even people who drive into them on highways (more here).  The leftwing idiots who have mangled our culture so that culling them by hunting is taboo in most areas, have also created this mess among their many other messes, and are now attempting to solve the problem through a bigger government that will create unfunded programs to either sterilize the deer or put the does on the pill or, I don’t know, train the stags to strap a balloon on their peckers before … (you can't make this stuff up).  And we all know that this type of madness is not limited to deer.  That the obvious solutions evade such people is further support of the proposition advanced by some serious thinkers that liberalism is indeed a form of mental illness.  From the available record, it has sure looked like that for at least a century now.  (for more on the psychological and psychiatric aspects of this notion, just google ‘liberalism, mental disorder’)

Eastern meetings? Oh sure. You weren’t there either. I think you are just a BSer Frisch. Cut and paste mostly. No intelligence springs from your noggin. Plagiarism mostly.
Walt can believe what he wants. I only try and keep the left’s lies from sticking. That is why I correct you. You know you did not attend any of those meetings yet you think you can get away with them. Too funny.

The thing about getting to our age is that human stupidity becomes crystal clear and the sad thing is not enough people want to open their eyes to it. It may be a culturally different flavour in Australia, but the stupidity is the same.
Are you up-to-date with the Crimea situation? The idential situations occurred in Estonia in 1924 and 1940???? The big bad bear has not changed its blatant tactics.

Heli 349am – The situation with the Crimea has been apparent to me for some years now, and the recent annexation was totally anticipated as has been reported here about Russia’s intentions in its ‘near abroad’.

As we track the developments in our tepid response to this outright expansionist strategy, I will have more to say about it when we discover how Russia will continue to expand into the Ukraine. Tere tulemast!

I will take the first shift. And in the dead of night, spirit him off to Todd’s place. Don’t tell me who’s next on the list in case I’m captured.

Everybody put tape over their mouths and run to the hills. Then maybe we will be safe from the speech/thought police. I will never tell them my inner thoughts, NEVER!

Concerning critter population: I know when they (whoever “they” are) introduced the wolf back into Washington State among others states, the law of unintended consequences worked perfectly. The wolves of Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington drove the moose down to lower elevations. Thus more moose contact with humans and their hobbles this year and last winter. Tragically, people hitting a moose on a country road is more serious than slamming into Bambi. I reckon those motorists who have died from unexpectedly hitting a moose unseen before on their road or who are disabled for life think the whole re-introduction idea is horse pucky, aka, madness.
Concerning illegal aliens getting legal status, I do have to wonder what all the law abiding millions of people across the globe who are waiting patiently for their chance to come here legally think about the illegal aliens who cut in line and are given a fast track. Millions who are following the rules to gain legal status must think this is madness and most unfair.

But what is liberty without wisdom, and without virtue? It is the greatest of all possible evils; for it is folly, vice, and madness, without tuition or restraint.
I love the sentiment with a few reservations. I note that under the moral therapeutic state, man is never allowed to become wise. His actions are proscribed by an ever narrowing set of permissible behaviors and acceptable thoughts. He never has the opportunity to fully examine all possible options. He is forced to see life through blinders. The teaching of virtue is considered outmoded or only acceptable if dispensed by the state…to hold thoughts deemed inappropriate even if they are not acted upon is unacceptable.

Thanks George, for the re-direct. Accidentally ended up here, however fantastic reading how people are thinking over there. Isn’t freedom of speech wonderful! Do the Russians have a similar chat line, on similar subjects.
Problem here in Oz with fracking – need to find out the connection between fracking and control of water and corrupt State politicians presently under investigation. Perhaps fracking isn’t the problem, but corruption? (Water? will it be the new oil?)

walt 1017am – what is beyond belief is that self-styled intellectuals of the Left still believe that their ideology can thrive in a free give and take of ideas. Inimically tyrannical, their philosophy gladly embraces the asymmetric debate in which they appeal to the gun to silence those who oppose them and their ideas, all the while claiming that they are for free speech from all quarters. These pages are witness to such one-sided condemnations along with their subsequent denials.

I put nothing past the radical Left. Remember when they (yes, even we, including me,)laughed at Rush when he fist started saying “they” were coming after the SUV?
Now when a Leftist religion is on the line, dust off the brown shirts that have been stashed deep in the closet. A Progressive ” teacher” calling for jail for those that don’t buy his crap? HELL!! cut off an appendage while your at it.
I do believe punishment for Heresy is off the books by now.
I’ll never forget the words of a Berkeley U student who said to some TV reporter and camera,, ” You can say anything you like,, just as long as we agree to what you say.” ( Some tree sit-in if I recall)
Since jail for us heretics isn’t going to happen, the EPA has been doing a work around on that.
BTW.. Someone needs to check on Russ. Let’s be sure someone hasn’t thrown a bag over his head, and is sitting in some ECO jail.

Mr. Walt: I worry more about Dr. Rebane than I do Rush. Rush can buy a boatload of legal experts who attack like sharks to take on the good fight for freedom of speech, but can Dr. Rebane? I am not privy to the Good Doc’s current financial status, but let’s say they would rather line him up in front of a firing squad (after cutting out his tongue and chopping off all his keypad typing fingers) than simply bankrupt him. The Lefties want silence. Silence to them is Golden. The debate is over, so shut the F up and fall in line.
Madness, simply madness. I had a niece that took one semester at our local Sierra College (she was home schooled and only 16 at the time), but I digress. She took a collegiate creative writing course. The assignment was to write an article on any subject she chose, except one. The class was barred from writing ANYTHING about abortion. Not that a 16 year old home schooled kid who already passed our high school graduation requirements would want to write about abortion, but the point is she could write about donkey sex with her left arm or the weight of the fuzz in one’s navel, but not the forbidden topic. She told me she just did what it takes to get out of that class alive and with a good grade, even to the point where she learned that writing about any conservative topic (for, not against) was a sure way to get a poor grade. She learned to play the game early, thanks to our little Sierra College. That experience helped her get her Masters at Boston College. Even dark clouds have a silver lining.
Yep, them libs are so open minded aren’t they? You would be a fool to state otherwise because their idea of free speech demands that be the case. Gotta love them Libhole Progressive types. Its for our good and not their control freak egos. Ya right.
The madness continues. This current news blurb is all too familiar. Reminds me of that poor Vietnamese immigrant farmer that lost the farm and every penny he had cause his tractor killed a bug or endangered rat on his farm. So much for the American Dream. How do you explain that to any sane person?

Madness is a good phrase of the day because common sense has been tossed out the window. It is madness to think of every ever increasing role of government into our daily lives and all aspects of the human experience could result in anything but loss of liberty, loss of freedom and total control by the State. It is madness to think the Constitution is something other than a document of prohibitions on government. Common sense has become uncommon sense and good has been labeled evil and evil is now being called good.

Concerning the Lefties unrelenting efforts to silence anyone/everyone who hints at disapproval of their little schemes and designs, I retract my comments about Dr. Rebane facing the firing squad. The Progressives do not believe in capital punishment so Dr. Rebane’s life may be spared. On second thought, capital punishment requires a trail and conviction, which is messy, public, and its outcome uncertain. Ah, much easier for our Lefty comrade just to toss him in the Black Hole of Calcutta or secretly ship him off to Devil’s Island or some Disneyland House of Horrors Gulag. They might still cut off all his keypad typing fingers. Ever try to hold a bar of soap or wipe yourself with just thumbs? It ain’t pretty I tell ya.

    Remember Walt…anything unusual is “evidence”! A little warmer than you recall…GLOBAL WARMING……a little cooler…GLOBAL WARMING…..drier this year…GLOBAL WARMING….wetter….GLOBAL WARMING….haltosis……warts….toenail fungus…GLOBAL WARMING.
    You get the gist!
I’m a little concerned they’ve become more shrill recently….makes me think things might be much worse financially for the various governments (and their favored grant recipients……Hi Steve) than we’ve been led to believe!

Quite correct Fish. Hence the change to “climate change”. No matter WHAT happens,
they can claim the “high” ground. They gotta be “high”,, to keep up the bovine excrement. Catalytic converters coming to cow behinds in a pasture near you.
At least activated charcoal diaper cow fart carbon sequestration systems.
Not really proven to work, but a “feel good” measure probably invented with taxpayer dollars, needs to be implemented non the less.
I hear they are working on the same thing to put on wild life. Look at all the new government jobs that would be created. Tracking down all those carbon emitting critters will be big money, and a new tax will be needed.
Of course a feasibility study will be needed. ( let the local grant money fight begin.) The SBC will be all over that. Just sacrifice a acre of old growth timber to apply for the huge new grant gold mine. (Can’t get a dime without the paperwork.)
