From recent developments we again see that compromising your principles to play the ‘go along to get along’ (GATGA) game does not work.  It looks like the two Republican strategies I outlined in 'Republican Rumblings' were spot on when we consider what went down at CPAC this week, and what the Repubs are doing to themselves and having done to them by the Dems in the GATGA game.

Rand Paul and other speakers at the conservatives’ conference definitely stated their firm preference to stick to principles no matter the short term pain.  According to their lights and available evidence GATGA does not work within or without our borders.  Look at what the established Republican leadership is doing across the country.  Never mind, just look at the nearby race for California's 4th congressional district race in which the party’s establishment wants to weaken incumbent Tom McClintock who gets highest marks from conservatives for not playing GATGA.  They will run Art Moore against him who in 2014 sounds like one step removed from a Democrat, and that small step is opposition to Obamacare in which he is today joined by many Democrats.  (more here)

As predicted, the recently passed farm bill has now been rolled up tightly and shoved up the Republicans’ collective you know what.  It took only about a month for the Dems to erase the much touted (by Repubs) but iffy $800M food stamp savings this year through a clever gaming of the ‘heat and eat’ gambit that for some reason they never saw coming.  This involves the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (Liheap) – great name since it is a heap of lies.  Liheap beneficiaries automatically qualify for food stamps, so state level Dems have started spreading around heating checks for amounts as low as $1 to one cent to increase their federal food stamp rolls and buy a bunch more votes.  So the projected savings from raising the Liheap trigger to $20 is out the window when states send out checks for $20.01 and $21.  The wealth redistributors' math is on the mark; for spending an additional $1 they receive about $48 extra dollars from Washington.  Congressman Doug Lamalfa, call your office.

Detroit and Chicago will really show how liberals play the Chapter 9 (municipal bankruptcy) version of GATGA.  Its short name is ‘Unions Win, Creditors Lose’.  The banks which made those less than doubtful loans are either dumber than 2x4s with faces painted on them, or thought they had a GATGA wink-wink with the feds to bail them out when the cities go belly up.  The unbelievable part is that they’re still making these loans even though towns like Detroit, Stockton, Vallejo, … are demonstrating that it is perfectly ethical to stiff the lenders (and taxpayers) when you get your tender parts caught in a wringer.  It’s part and parcel of our new progressive culture.

Here in California we also have the Calpers and Calstrs version of GATGA that has been played by our double dummy or scumbag (take your pick) local politicians for decades.  Calpers, claiming it made a mistake reading mortality tables, has raised annual contribution requirements by $1.2B.  Calstrs, whose teachers can’t do math let alone teach it, have underestimated their contribution requirements and are now raising them somewhere between $5.3B to $5.7B annually.  And we’re not even going to get into the unfunded liability totals for those pension funds, which have been covered extensively in these pages.

Going overseas to see how GATGA is working out there, we all know that Putin has been playing pin the tail on Obama with every turn of the diplomatic screw from the so-called Arab Spring to Ukraine crisis.  NPR’s Mara Liasson this morning pointed out that all those problems can also be laid on Bush2’s back, since he didn’t go into Georgia with guns blazing when Putin rolled his army across the border and essentially annexed a couple of Georgian provinces.

But things took a definite turn for the worse when our president-in-waiting and then SecState Hillary took Obama's big red reset button to Moscow.  That little plastic toy was supposed to demonstrate America’s willingness to enter a new round of GATGA with the latest version of the ever-insecure and corrupt Greater Trans-Ural Slavic Empire under whatever name it now presents itself.  You’d think someone in that administration would have read a history book that was written before the Great Society kicked in.

That Putin loathes Team Obama from the boss on down is no secret.  The best great white hope to assuage Putin resides in Dr Angela Merkel – they both respect each other and speak German in private.  Merkel can talk to Putin about Russia’s legitimate concerns – e.g. the centuries old fear of being attacked from multiple sides through indefensible borders, and the shrinking Slavic demographics.  Angela can lay out for Vladimir without any military overtones that he needs to change Russia from a corrupt thugacracy to some version of free or state run (a la China) market capitalism.  I believe that Merkel can also dangle a future Russian membership in NATO (or its successor) if Putin can straighten out and fly right – in short, invite him to try a round of GATGA with the west which would cooperate by not setting up a grim array of NATO countries on its border.

Such a new geo-strategy makes all the sense in the world given Russia’s shrinking population that attempts to guard and develop untold riches in its trans-Ural regions.  Those same riches are in the cross-hairs of China and pan-Islamism which easily unites under the banner of colonizing to spread the faith.  (Look at the diverse sources of Islamic funding for maintaining and spreading Muslim conclaves throughout Europe and America.)  Angela can have that conversation with Vladimir and act as a trusted go-between with the EU and America, especially now that our Chief Community Naif has more flexibility.

Gregory’s cogent argument – “It really would be worse for you without the current GOP house majority. Trust me.”
In what way? The Dems have a habit of overplaying their hand. See Obama care.
Even Dems are running scared from it.
You boil the frog slowly, and the GOP establishment just argues with the Dems about how slowly. Sharon Angle would make a better representative than most any other I’ve seen. She might actually follow the Constitution and follow the law. Horrors!
The debt continues to grow, the govt continues to grow and our freedoms continue to shrink.
I have asked you to show some reversal and you can’t – trust me.

“Sharon Angle would make a better representative than most any other I’ve seen.”
Not without winning an election, and she couldn’t keep her foot out of her mouth long enough to do that. Harry Reid even supported her surreptitiously during the primary campaign; he knew who he wanted to run against.
If you want to get rid of Obamacare, you need to get a GOP Senate next year. And for the next presidential election, you might think about not nominating either a political neophyte or a first term Senator who doesn’t have a record of getting things done.

Obama will veto any repeal they pass. And what will the Rs offer in place? We will get rid of Obama care when Americans wake up to the fact that it was a con from the start and they were lied to. Doesn’t matter how many Dems or Rs are in office. Dems have no morals or principles and will do whatever it takes to stay in office. There are a lot of Dems that would vote to repeal it now.
Sharon Angle did way better than any other R that had run against Dirty Harry in a long time. Foot in mouth? Doesn’t seem to hurt other pols one bit.
Depends on R or D. The Dems regularly get folks elected that have an IQ of bath water or lower. If Obama had been an R and wanted to run for pres on his pathetic qualifications, you would have said what a mistake to run him. Didn’t seem to hurt him one bit. Without his tele-prompter he barely makes it to local alderman if that. We have a crappy govt because we have way too many idiots and greedy morons in the electorate. How many even bother to read the ballot initiatives?
Hate to beat a dead horse Greg – but you are not addressing the TPs main issues. The debt and the size and scope of govt are going through the roof and our freedoms and liberties are declining. R vs D these days means only how fast we decline. The only rays of light are from the TP.
Read the latest stories about DHS – our new national police force. I fear them far more than I fear terrorists. Obama care is a bell we can un-ring. Not with out a fearsome loss of money and folks lives disrupted, but it can be gotten rid of. Once we have a thug-ocracy in place, it will take violence of a terrible scale to rid ourselves of. And that’s if America finally wakes up – not a sure thing.

    Here you go, folks.
    http://www.politico.com/story/2014/03/hillary-clinton-iowa-gop-2016-election-poll-104621.html
I realize it’s a poll and they can be wrong, but really – Hillary?
Crooked as a dog’s hind leg and just as big a liar as her husband.
And she gets 48 to Christie’s 35. And Christie was the great white moderate R hope of the sort that Gregory thinks will win for the Rs. The ‘reasonable’ R that could win in the blue state of New Jersey. You are chasing an electorate of complete idiots. Until they wake up, the country slides down the chute.

Be honest, you love beating dead horses.
No, I’m not addressing the “main issues”, which sprang from the libertarian side of the aisle, where the TP gets all of their good ideas. This is about getting the TP-GOP past the next elections despite their proclivity towards shooting themselves in the feet.
Sharron Angle might have been your dream candidate but had cooler heads in your party prevailed, Harry Reid wouldn’t now be in the Senate.

Never said she was my ‘dream’ candidate, Greg. Just way better than the pathetic crooked morons currently running our country into the ground. It doesn’t take a lot of whole numbers to beat a zero. The Rs have run ‘cooler’ heads against Harry and they didn’t do as well.
If you don’t think the 3 main points I have challenged you with are the most important, I’d love to hear what you think are the 3 most important. When the country is broke, you’re going to have a hard time ignoring it.

She wasn’t “way better” than the candidate she edged out in the primary who could have beaten Reid, and the likes of McConnell aren’t “pathetic crooked morons”.

First Greg says we should run folks who win and then he says the loser is the better candidate who would beat Reid. I’m having a hard time following your logic, Greg. How do you know he would beat Reid? If he had won the primary, the same machine that went after Angle would then turn on him and destroy his image.
Have you already forgotten how the LSM loved Christie until it looked like he was going to be a formidable candidate against Hillary?
Mitch is looking better now that he admits it was a mistake to go after the TP. I think Sharon would have won had the R establishment actually helped her, and Mitch knows that now. Too late.
And could you please answer my question? Or do you just want to distort what I write and throw rocks? What is your idea of the biggest problems facing our country?

Because the guy she beat in the primary (with Reid’s help) would have gotten all of Angle’s votes and a number of middle of the roaders in November. Running for Senator against an old battleaxe like Reid isn’t an entry level political job and she didn’t have the knack of keeping her feet from tickling her tonsils.
You really have a hard time grokking politics, don’t you?

No Greg – he would not have gotten all of her votes. You are the one that doesn’t get it. You are the poster child of George’s post. Just win with a Dem light and we continue to slide downhill, but hey, we won the office. If you are so up on politics, why won’t you give us a bit of wisdom as to what are the principal problems of our country? You are free to criticise me, I don’t mind but where are your opinions?
I’ll be the first to tell you she gave her detractors plenty to distort and run with, but she knows more about running our country than Reid. It seems you would rather have a slick and polished liar in office that the so-called educated elites approve of than a competent leader. You seem obsessed with style over substance. The LSM loves to portray honest folk as hee-yuk rubes and the slick liars as polished and urbane. This country needs leaders concerned with what’s best for our country and to hell with what some one from the NYTs thinks of them.
I think the bottom line question for you, Greg – if it was Reid vs Sharon Angle on the ballot, which would you vote for? I would hope it would be for Angle. Clearly, in Nevada, the voters decided the slick liar was the better choice than some one the NYTs would disapprove of.
I understand politics as practised in this country – and I don’t like it. It’s killing our country. You vote for my scam and I’ll vote for your scam. See how grown up and polite it is?

Scott, you’re inventing history. The #2 behind Angle in the primary was the darling of the likes of Limbaugh and Hannity. Not an Obama acolyte, not a RINO. She, a former state senator, state party chair and beauty queen would have gotten all of Angle’s votes and then some.
This isn’t about being a Democrat in GOP Clothing to get some votes; it is about not throwing bombs that cannot result in a governing coalition in order to prove how conservative you are, and until the GOP can get control of the Senate, demanding the Speaker pick fights he cannot win is a recipe for your party shooting itself in the foot. Again.
My small government cred goes back to the ’80’s, and am quite used to friendly fire shooting friends who aren’t pure enough; it’s what keeps libertarianism (including its bastard child, the TP) from gaining a real foothold. You need a bigger tent.
