In his 19feb14 column on Townhall.com, national commentator and academic Thomas Sowell takes a disquieting look at the prominent freshman Senator Ted Cruz, who he claims is weakening the Republican Party with his man-the-barricades, no compromise stance against the Democrats’ rampant expansion of government that is led by President Obama who has clearly thrown the Constitution under the bus. He sees a strong Republican Party as the last great hope to save the Republic.
In Obama’s accreting unbridled power to the presidency, Sowell points to the parallels of the bit by piece process with which Hitler and the Nazis subverted the German state after gaining a minority position in the Bundestag in 1933. In his analysis Sowell repeats the very points I have made on RR, using the exact analogue he now warns us against. And on another parallel track Sowell wonders if the tipping point to violence and the fundamental transformation of America has not already been passed. I remain convinced that it has.
It is interesting to compare the hysterical and accusatory comment streams on RR when I first introduced these notions. Now it seems that a lot of what I and other bloggers saw as the disastrous path of our nation, is finally becoming visible to the acknowledged socio-political sages of our time. I believe that they remained wrapped in their measured responses too long as the obvious unfolded across the land. Apparently for the Sowells, Krauthammers, and Wills the time has now come to start running after a train that left the station long ago.
Don’t conclude from this that I am not an admirer of Thomas Sowell, Charles Krauthammer, and George Will. I most certainly am, and have here demonstrated my admiration. But I do take them to task on their rather dignified absorption rates of what has come to pass, and for foregoing the hope that earlier and less nuanced warnings from their pens may have made a difference.
