LavabitRIP Lavabit.
Lavabit has demonstrably been one of the most secure email services on the internet.  It is now closing its doors much to the consternation of the feds who have not been able to hack into Lavabit’s emails and servers.  And this story is worth a consideration to all Americans who pay lip service to maintaining our freedoms.  According to the report in Xato.net Lavabit’s founder and CEO Ladar Levinson refuses to play along with the feds in opening up his email service to government spying.  The exact nature of the government threat has yet to emerge, but the high hard one is clear –  “The message here is that US courts can force a business to subvert their own security measures and lie to their customers, deliberately giving them a false sense of security.” (H/T to RR reader)

The damage by teachers unions is more severe than even I had anticipated.  This especially in California where the CTA has f&*#ed over the young people of the state for some decades now.  California teachers get paid at the highest rates in the country, and they produce students that rank among the lowest in literacy and numeracy in the nation.  But the story doesn’t end there,  as academic Jonathan Jacobs writes ‘As Education Declines, So Does Civic Culture’ in the 16sep13 WSJ.  He strongly underlines and extends the message that Charles Murray (Coming Apart) has delivered (covered much in these pages with more to come).

The bottom line is that we’re turning out millions of 2x4s with faces painted on them.  These students can neither read, write, cypher, nor reason.  And it all comes together in the workplace where “… employers attest, as college instructors will too if they’re being frank, that many college graduates can barely construct a coherent paragraph and many have precious little knowledge of the world—the natural world, the social world, the historical world, or the cultural world. That is a tragedy for the graduates, but also for society: Civic life suffers when people have severely limited knowledge of the world to bring to political or moral discussions.”

BushPricesLiberal history book guts second amendment.

As a footnote to the above, leftwing academics continue to do their
share in supplying students a distinctly ‘progressive’ perspective of
what went on before that got us to where we are (more here).

Played out daily in the public round is the truth of ‘a nation ignorant and free, that never was and never shall be.’  (Thomas Jefferson)

Bush2 ended the financial crisis before Obama took office.  As pointed out by an RR reader (here), let’s circle that barn again and take a careful look at what happened before that cold, garbage strewn January 2009 morning in Washington.  Stanford professors Keith Hennessey and Edward Lazear give a succinct accounting of the events and their aftermath (here).  But as we now know, this was a crisis too good to waste in advancing the American socialists’ agenda and fundamentally transforming the nation.

Ending on a high note and a conundrum for collectivist ideology, it turns out that long ago humans evolved brains built for charity.  This has been obvious to the celebrants of American exceptionalism for a couple of centuries or more, now science weighs in with some clinical evidence.  ‘Hard-wired for Giving’ presents the research story (here), but the bigger thrust is that we really don’t need the government gun to make us care for our neighbors and countrymen.  We did it before socialism, and we can do it again if the feds would back off a mite on their forced redistribution programs.  But that is not the progressive view, and the sheeple (see above) are quickly receding out of the reach of reason.

Finally, a little ‘pojetry’

The time has come, progressives say
    to speak of many things.
No not of Obama, the here and now,
    or what the future brings.
But of the past, the then and there,
of Reagan’s sins and Bush laid bare,
and the shape of Clinton’s wings.

[19sep13 update] … and a little food for thought.

We are told NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of more than a few Islamic lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics.  Makes you wonder …

I dunno. Clinton played the Republicans for a fool with the budget showdown stuff. Look, we just got Syria to be put on hold and the Fed ain’t ready to take its foot off the gas pedal cause they simply are not convinced that the economy is going anywhere put flat.
So, just as we catch our breaths, we now could have a partial shutdown of goberment by the end of the month, a possibility of a bigger shutdown in Oct, looming proposals to defund/delay Obamacare and the hits just keep on coming. Lots of risks.
More exciting times, my sistas from other mistas. The only good thing is that the immigration bill has been put on hold (like we all knew it was just political posturing anyway) so we all don’t go off the deep end. Trick or Treat? day is just around the corner.
Time for a bigger popcorn maker.

Yep, Romney by 7….looking at Todd’s site it seems many of us damned Democrats were a lot closer in our prognostication.
I say go ahead and shut it down…..I love how Cruz hung them out to dry…then the internecine fighting in the Republican party can really start as they dethrone Boehner, put Cantor on the hot seat, probably only lose a few seats in 2014, and get ready for the slaughter in 2016. I mean really, do Republicans think Christie can get the nomination? The rabid right will kill him in the primaries…it will be Paul, or Santorum, or some other crazy…..
The Republican party needs to do some serious soul searching….they are so out of step with the vast majority of the American people that it is not even funny anymore.
The sad part is that I know many Republicans who are torn..they recognize the need for a valid, rational opposition party, as a matter of fact our systems almost depend on a loyal opposition to work well…to vet issues…to maintain compromise…but the current Republican leadership has so isolated themselves that they cease to be able to do anything..

Ah Joe..you poor deluded nitwit…the Nobel Foundation doesn’t give the “Nobel Prize in Economics”. The swedish central bank does. The official name is: Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. The Nobel organization aren’t thrilled with the notion, neither are some of the recipients. “Friedrich Hayek stated that if he had been consulted whether to establish a Nobel Prize in economics he would “have decidedly advised against it” primarily because “the Nobel Prize confers on an individual an authority which in economics no man ought to possess.
As one might expect, a guy (Krugnuts) who joyously touts the party line on central banking and government spending might find himself in line for such an award.

The story about the demise of Lavabit is an extremely important post. If you Google “Ladar Levinson”, you will find several videos and articles that will give you some details about this man’s decision to close his business and throw away 10 years of hard work rather than knuckle under to government demands that he considers crimes against the American people.
The demands apparently came from a National Security Letter (NLS) (a device authorized by the Patriot Act) which, in addition to the demannds, contains a gag order that would result in 5 years in prison if he tells ANY OTHER PERSON what is in the letter. He cannot even tell his attorney!!! In the videos I have watched, he often has an attorney with him, who has stated that he hasn’t been told everything. Specifically, he cannot even reveal whether he received an NLS (although from his answer to questions that “he cannot disclose whether he received one” makes it obvious that he has (otherwise he would just say “No”).
Apparently he has been trying (unsucessfully) to fight this in a secret FISA court. I recall the disgust I have felt in the past when reading about secret courts in other countries, and the thankfullness I have felt about being an American where such a thing could not happen. Now apparently it has.
I do not think this is a partisan issue. The Patriot(?) Act, with its secret courts, was created by the Bush administration, but is being robustly exploited by the Obama administration, as evidenced by Snowden’s revelations about NSA spying on Americans, and the gargantuan facility being built in Utah to process the results of this unconstitutional activity. The parallels between what is happening in this country and the movie 1984 are scary. And for the scariest things in the movie that haven’t happened yet — I suggest those are a preview of what will be happening in the future if we do not reverse course.
It seems to be the nature of government to attempt to accrue more and more power to itself. While the rest of us have been bickering over partisan issues in our now divided nation, the government has been quietly dismantling the protections given us by the constitution. I do not think this is a conspiracy by one party or the other; I think it is just the nature of government.
I am wondering and hoping whether perhaps this is an issue that can begin to reunite our divided country. Cannot all Americans, both Democrat and Republican, liberal and conservative, come together and agree that at least the constitution is sacrosanct? Perhaps a start would be to require, in order to receive our votes, a commitment and a plan from any candidate of whatever party in next year’s mid-term elections that he/she will make it his/her first priority to roll back this unconstitutional activity and restore our lost freedoms, and for us to refuse to vote for any politician, of whatever party, who does not do so? Are we so blinded by our ideaologies that we will lose our American freedoms over them?
“We act not for ourselves but for the whole human race. The event of our experiment is to show whether man can be trusted with self-government.” Thomas Jefferson, 1802
    Well, can we?
I’m open to better ideas about how to proceed. Any constructive suggestions?

Two flights of heavily armed Apache helicopters and Blackhawks have flown over headed South. Hellfire missiles and rocket pods were visible. Basically,,, armed to the teeth.
That must be one hellofa training run.
Then again,, it’s pick’n season. Who just got ” CAMPed”,,Or is about to be…..?
BTW,,, See the LIBS walk out on the Benghazi testimony? They didn’t want to hear
what the family members had to say. Now would be a great time to drag Hillary back to testify.

Damned if I know. This is the first I’ve ever even heard of it. Steve does make use of the facility, but as far as I know, he is/was just a renter. Keep digging, I’d like to hear more.

Again Steve…the prize that Krugabe won is not the same prize that the Nobel prize winners in physics, chemistry, medicine……and dare I say peace receive. if you need to bitterly cling to a progressive Nobel winner you’ve still got the Conqueror of Syria upon which you can hang your progressive chapeau.

    Hey kids, guess what?
Over at sierrafoothillsreport.com, Sheriff Royal reported directly to Jeff Pelline that he will not be introducing “Sheriff” Mack on October 18th at the Grass Valley Veteran’s Building: http://sierrafoothillsreport.com/2013/09/20/scoop-sheriff-royal-drops-plans-to-introduce-sheriff-mack-after-learning-more-about-his-beliefs/
Apparently a real sheriff, and some other real sheriffs, shared notes and realized that “Sheriff” Mack had some untoward beliefs that they weren’t exactly comfortable being mistakenly represented as their own by introducing him at a political event.
I applaud real Sheriff Royal and am glad that he reviewed the evidence and Mack’s record and made his decision. And just to once again make this perfectly clear, let me emphasize that this was NEVER about trying to silence “Sheriff” Mack or influence a politician’s beliefs about Mack’s subject matter. My position was clearly a criticism about Royal’s seemingly poor political acumen, of which I have a new view since he has changed course based on reviewing Mack’s record and finding things with which he did not agree.
I will be attending the October 18th event and am actually very much looking forward to it.

I would like to see Sheriff Taylor rise from the dead and bring Aunt Bea to GV. That would create an even bigger stir.
Times have changed. Nobody got their undies all crinkled up when Sheriff John sang “Put another candle on your birthday cake.” Nowadays that would considered offense to the Jehovah Witness’s.

Ok, I will go way out on a limb here and comment on Dr. Rebane’s update to this post concerning gun rights and Muslims: “We are told NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of more than a few Islamic lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Makes you wonder …”
Examunto good doctor. These crank pots that shoot up students and movie goers are all mentality ill. Nuts, one oar in the water, not playing with a full deck, elevator does not go to the top. Most all the school shooting involved somebody that was on mental health anti-crazy drugs as a teen. Now, that really makes me wonder.
As far as lumping all gun owners in the same kettle, it does not even need a response. If you are against gun ownership, then of course everybody who owns a gun is the enemy to a twisted feeble control freak state of mind. Like their OCD really kicks in when you say bang, bang.
No worries from this tiny speck on the Planet known as Earth. I do NOT have a collection of Assault Rifles. I do however have a nice assortment of defensive rifles. Peace out.

You don’t have any assault rifles, assuming you’re a civilian living in California. Assault rifles, like all machine guns, have been banned here since the 1930’s which was before the assault rifle was even invented.
