Woke up this morning to a blatant Obama-centric report of last night’s debate on National Propaganda Radio’s Morning Edition.  Talk about being in the tank for everything progressive.  Of course, Mitt’s promise to pull their federal funding doesn’t help that already biased outfit to cut him any even-handed slack.  In any case, it was a masterpiece of journalistic subterfuge.  For example, their handpicked ‘expert’ was asked the same question Romney asked Obama about how many federal drilling leases were cancelled after Obama took office.  The expert mimicked Obama and started talking about the ‘complexity’ of the energy situation, blah, blah, … .  Apparently the correct answer is that Obama cancelled about 60+% of the sea leases, and about 30% of the land leases.  The NPR journalist just ignored being ignored, and went on to the next question the answer to which was another Vote Obama ad.

Re the debate itself – I don’t know exactly how to characterize its impact on the Rebanes.  Most certainly it had more than one dimension for which people awarded ‘debating points’.  On the charisma, animation, and enthusiasm parts we definitely saw a comeback from the President.  He was more like the man he deports himself to be on his stump appearances.  That must have given great comfort to all his supporters who last time saw a man who looked like he was planning his return to Hawaii next January while Mitt was talking.

On matters of substance, Mitt was a slam dunk and Obama was a lying sack of … .

Immigration – Obama couldn’t pull off his promised immigration reform with super-majorities in both houses because he was too busy screwing up the economic recovery.

Energy independence – He had to torpedo real initiatives (i.e. increasing fossil fuels production and distribution) because he was too busy picking losers in his ‘green jobs’ disaster.  The latest to solyndrize yesterday was A123 battery developer for the new Fisker electric cars which explode in flames.  In quiet embarrassment the feds have pulled the remaining funding for them after flushing over $500M down the Fisker toilet.

Economy – Sang the ‘I Created 5 Million Jobs’ medley again to which Mitt was too tongue-tied to mention that Obama’s economic and tax policies inhibited the creation of the needed (and historically ‘normal’) 10M jobs that would have put back to work all who lost jobs and new workers looking for jobs.

Foreign policy – here the air became thickest with lies and the clear build of a cover-up which I will call the Benghazi Bamboozle.  With moderator Crowley’s help Obama was able to skate past using the word ‘terrorist’ in his day-after announcement in another context to cover for his contention that he told the nation our consulate had been attacked by terrorists, and then going on for 14 days talking up the ‘video riot’ before finally fessing up that it was an al-Qaeda terrorist attack.

In the meanwhile, his lackeys – most notably Susan Rice – shamelessly maintained at every opportunity that their best information to date was that Benghazi was a video riot, and everyone was waiting for “all the information” to come in.  The bullshit just flowed out of the White House from all doors and windows, and the lamestream lapped up all of it.  Finally the truth, that State had real time communications with Benghazi during the attack, hung the lie label on the video riot story, and now the dance starts as to who knew what when.  The lamestream and countrywide local lackeys are in full smokescreen mode until the election they are betting on winning.

Again, Mitt failed to capitalize and didn’t ask Obama, ‘If you knew it was a terrorist attack on 9/12 and claimed to have said so, then why did you have Rice sing the video riot song all over Sunday TV five days later?’, and, oh yeah, ‘What was that crap you had Joe put out last week about no one telling the President what was happening in Benghazi when State was on the horn with our consulate on 9/11?’

The Repubs will have to work hard to snatch this defeat out the jaws of victory.

[18oct12 update]  The record of Debate2 bears study from so many different angles – here’s one on the outright lies about energy policy.  The only Obama strategy that will remain intact until 6 November is summarized in the graphic below.

The intelligence failures in Benghazi are thin soup compared to those that happened under the Bush admin on Sept 11 2001 and the false information about WMD’s that led to the justification of our invasion of Iraq.

This is another example of the Repubs war on free thinking Libertarians and Gary Johnson. Pretty pathetic and shows their insecurity about the election. This is after they changed the rules at the Convention to banish Ron Paul delegates. Supporters of freedom ? Yeah…
“In August, the Republican Party establishment violated its own rules by disenfranchising Ron Paul supporters and squelching dissenting voices now and in the future in order to assure the nomination of Mitt Romney for president.
As Election Day draws near, the same coterie of kingmakers has set their sights on the ballots in all 50 states, filing legal challenges to the presence of third-party candidates that might siphon off voters in the tight race for the White House.
One candidate targeted for ballot exclusion is former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party’s candidate for president….”

PaulE 128pm – Don’t know what exactly your point here is, but in the post 9/11 era the pre-invasion intelligence from EVERY significant intelligence agency corroborated the notion that Iraq had and was developing more WMDs – that was the claim made by all the governments who signed on to the invasion. The intelligence assessment was not something that Bush2 was hatching in some dark corner.
To date the Benghazi Bamboozle appears from all available evidence as a third rate attempt to cover up a misdirected and inept foreign policy that has failed along every imaginable dimension under Obama. Everything that has still managed to work in that arena was put in place by Bush2 (and that includes the means, methods, and motivation to kill Bin Laden).

And the intelligence failures that led to us being unaware of the terrorism plans for 9-11? Why shouldn’t Bush be held to the same level of responsibility that you hold Obama?
And was the false evidence on WMD’s that led to war a failure of intelligence or not? Simple question.

PaulE 241pm – I think you missed the important factor here of Bush2 telling Americans what the world’s intelligent agencies reported to him before he went to war with congressional and international approval, and of Obama (and team) lying to Americans what his intelligence agencies told him re the security situation in Libya and the events of last 9/11. The former would arguably be an intelligence failure, the latter not – but instead, a failure of another kind.
If you judge them to be equivalent, I need to post another enlightening revelation in the Liberal Mind section of RR.

In my view there is plenty of evidence that the Bush team failed to consider in their rush to war that could have led to different conclusions but the wanted war with Iraq and were willing to cook the books to make it seem urgent and essential that we invade Iraq. Would you like me to post information that I have that that leads me to that conclusion?
Benghazi is a one month news story. Iraq and 9-11-01 and the mistakes that led to those events will be with us for ever. I don’t consider them different in nature only in significance.

I unfortunately was surfing past MSNBC at the time that Chris Matthews was gleefully gloating over Romney’s “Binders full of women” tongue tangle; obviously he meant binders full of RESUMES of women. If the best game that the cheap shot artists can bring is “binders” and “Don’t fire Big Bird”, then it is all over but the votin’. I personally attribute Romneys slip to his trying to state his point in an environment where Crowley was in the process of stiffing him almost 10% of time that she allowed Obama.

Even with the deck stacked against Mitt, and two against one, Mitt still came out on top. Candy tried her best to run interference to no avail.
That is why today, “O”‘s poll numbers are lower than they were 24 hours ago.
The “undecided” seem to be deciding for Mitt. “O” can smile all he likes. He’s just not going to smile his way out of this one.

The Mormon religion has a terrible record on woman’s rights. They’ve come some distance in the past four decades but they still have a long way to go. Mitt Romney is a Mormon first before anything else, including “politician.” This should give every woman pause, no matter her political party. No one wants to talk about this since JFK’s election made religion a taboo subject for discussion. I think it’s time to break that taboo.

I’ll talk about LDS religion. I don’t care, no more than I care about Obama’s faith, whatever that it is. I suppose this is all about the “binders” slip, which of course was a discussion about resumes and not the snarky meme it’s become out on the brain-dead Internets. Maybe RealClearPolitics can add it into their average?
Has everyone had a chance to see Frontline’s piece on Romney and Obama?

Please do. Way better than these faux “debates.” They talk extensively about both major candidates in a very sober way, including Romney’s Mormon faith, which again, I don’t care about.
Exit question: Who was America’s most “religious” President since WWII? Wait for it…

It was a good debate. I don’t think Obama likes his challenger, but I have been wrong before. Obama won just by looking someone in the eye and did a little movement with his extremities. Much improved. A real victory.
Trouble is Obama won the battle but is getting closer to losing the war day by day. The Obama-manics shot their whole wad in the Spring. Poured millions in ads trying to win the whole enchilada by the 4th of July. Romney is a heartless money grubbin’ Mc Scrooge, 1%er, Bain Capital, tax cheater, tax dodger, murderer, woman hater, cult member, abortion hater, and ties his dog to the roof of his car!! Gasp! Well, at least he had his dog in the pet carrier while tootling down the highway.
Romney has survived class warfare and the war on women to boot. He has survived being too moderate and being too conservative. The liberals thought being pro-life would sink him, yet women are flocking to Romney faster than any other group, no matter how you slice it and dice it. Sign of the times. Its the economy stupid.
With each debate Obama keeps failing to prove that Romney is a bad man. A very bad man. Did not hear anything about Bain Capital yesterday or not much about Romeny’s evil sidekick Edie Munster kicking grandma off Social Security.
Nope, Romney looks like a worthy opponent standing next to our President. All that money wasted. Obama has no plan B. Maybe next debate we will discuss tax returns. Obama can will all the debates but he is losing the war. Its mid October and he hasn’t wrapped it up yet. Nor will he. No brass ring for Barry.

Oh Walt, I was simply parroting all the attacks (personal attacks) levied on Romney by the Obama campaign. Not on issues, just personal attacks. You know, the Chicago way. Plan A. No Plan B.
It is about time Obama lays out his vision for the future. Send everybody to school? OK, but what about the short term, Mr. Obama??
Walt, my real point is it does not matter if Obama wins a couple debates. His state of ship is unraveling and he is going down for the count. Let the libs claim victory in the next debate. After that its Boom, Boom, out goes the lights. Then fumigate the White House.
Momentum is a fearful thing. I would rather have momentum and be behind, than watch it all slip away. Take Wisconsin. Obama was up by 14, then 12, then 4 and now up 1 or 2. Tomorrow they will be tied. Obama is not gaining ground anywhere, Romney is everywhere. The Big Mo is going to steamroll right over Obama and smash him flatter than a pancake. Pity the poor fool who steps in what is left of him.

Beck had G. Johnson on, and gave him some air time, since most other media
won’t give him the time of day. He is on the ballot in 48 or 49 states.
His stance on some issues will yank some votes away from “O” and Mitt, but primarily “O”.( in those states that P.E. likes to brag about.)
Yes, he has some good qualities, and some good ideas that even I could

Paul’s right. If you can get beyond horse racing, If Obama takes Ohio it’s over for Romney. Although the momentum is decidedly with Romney and that should frighten the pants off of the Obama campaign. It’s not the current numbers, it’s the trends.
Mitt is a liberal Republican, folks. Just like Conservatives said he was. Just like his Dad and his entire family. George Romney fought Barry Goldwater (and lost) and the whole neo-Conservative movement.
He’s fiscally conservative and moderate to liberal on moral issues. Just look at his past record, particularly on women’s heath ones (abortion). A zebra does not change his stripes.
Romney had to wear the mantle of a neo-con to get nominated, it’s just that it probably took longer for him to shed it given the constant attacks from the Obama campaign as a ideologue right-winger. He shed it during the first debate and the Obama campaign had no idea what to do other than to continue with the same dumb script (will someone please send Axelrod this post?): Romney is a dangerous, right wing ideologue who is channeling the ghosts of Carnegie.

What have we learned from the first 3 debates:
1- Romney is Presidential (despite being painted otherwise by the MSM)
2- Biden is very angry and unintelligent (has great veneers), Ryan is a formidable opponent. Biden reminded voters about all the free goodies they have gotten from the Obama admin.
3- Obama desperately needs a teleprompter and has no moral code against telling lies. Whether any of the candidates has any understanding of monetary policy is unknown.

I think they all understand monetary policy. This is the “the guy I don’t like is ignorant metaphor” to borrow an argument from George Lakoff.(BTW, Lakoff should stick to linguistics and stay out of populist politics).
I am overstating the above to make a point, so I beg your pardon.
Obama’s clearly not dumb and it would be a grave error for his enemies to assume he can’t survive without a teleprompter. Obama, when it comes to monetary policy, is not thinking long term. When when the long term policy and structural monetary issues are brought up, one gets their hand slapped by Keynesians who disingenuously inform us that “we don’t know what will happen in 10, 20 or 40 years.” Well, we do/can by simply by looking back 40 years and examining what our monetary policy did to us. duh.
So the correct question is what is Obama’s long term strategy relative to his short term pumping? Also, what does he expect to come from the short term pumping? These seem to be rhetorical questions from my perspective.
BTW, on what would appear to be an off topic observation, I was looking at Google Maps this AM, and the White House is surrounded by the Treasury and FDIC buildings on its left and right side. Weird.

Ryan, I will agree with you about Mitt being a liberal Republican in all aspects except for one: his understanding of the role women will play in the global economy in the 21st century.
My great-great grandfather was a polygamist and my mother was terribly critical of the Mormon religion’s treatment of women growing up in Murray, Utah (though she never left Mormonism officially, eventually receiving her PhD from BYU once all her kids had left the nest). There is a split among Mormons regarding woman’s role in life and the religion. Here’s a recent article that explains this split pretty well: http://nymag.com/news/features/mitt-romney-mormonism-2012-10/
If this election is going to be decided by women, then I think this discussion about Mormon feminism needs to happen right now.
My mom died in her early 60s from 2 types of cancer, which I am sure had something to do with her living under the smokestacks of the lead smelters in Murray while she was growing up. Mormons are not Calvinists, and I am the first person to say that a person’s religion is personal and probably shouldn’t be a part of the discussion. But if born-again-ism is important, so is this.
In this case I think it’s pertinent.

The point I attempted to make was that none of the debates discussed monetary policy (and monetary policy does not make for good stump speech material). We can look at what Obama has blessed over the past 4 years, though I think it is against the rules to point out his record.

Romney, despite his recent and fake conversion (see Frontline episode), is decidedly to the left of center on Women’s issues, notably heath topics. And I think it’s a formal hasty generalization fallacy to assume that his Faith, as wacky as I believe it to be, will have any influence more than any other President in the past. It’s as odd to me as assuming Obama is some undercover Muslim Manchurian or Christian version of the Weather Underground candidate. I don’t buy it.

Mormonism is indeed an exotic religion with an astounding cosmology that provides for Man’s evolution to the pantheon of gods and unending glory for believers. It is not an endtimer religion like Christianity or Islam.
Judging a politician by his declared religion of record is somewhat like judging a politician by his promises. There is little correlation between the talk and the walk.
However, I do believe that the most reliable predictor of a politician’s actions is an analysis of his total record – kinderstube, training/experience, private life, public service. But that analysis is always heavily colored by the belief system of the analyst, so its utility is not of uniform worth to others.
In Obama’s case this prescription is corroborated because Obama was inexperienced in executive management, affairs of state, and accomplished NOTHING before being propelled into the Presidency; and in office he has continued his record of accomplishments while doing (im?)measurable harm to the nation. And the best we can tell from his unannounced plan forward is that he plans to double down and reprise his first term’s achievements. (see 18oct12 update above)

It always seemed to me that the Mormons were the 19th Century version of Scientology with a few important distinctions. The most important being that the Mormons, who were savagely discriminated against, found the United States to be the real promised land. And our Constitution was the framework that provided the necessary space and freedom for God’s work.
I have a soft spot for Mormons in that regard.
Needless to say, the institutional bigotry alluded to by Michael A above is indeed a problem for the church, but I really see no evidence of that in Romney. This is despite the Democrat’s intense campaign to make him appear that way. The “binders” thing is a good example of that.

The America as Promised Land is a debatable point, I will concede that. However generally speaking, mainstream LDS folk believe and preach that. At least my Mormon friends frequently mentioned that when I was a wee lad. Also we had several “trips” to the Oakland Temple where I was subjected to films in the basement. (I was in the school choir and 80% of my companions where Mormons) Needless to say my Presbyterian Grandmother put a stop to that when she showed up at the temple and whisked me away one day.

Joel Kotkin writes about the present day Mormons in his City Journal article: It’s Mormon in America.
Here is and extract from the article:
Today, some religious fundamentalists continue to rail against Mormons, while coastal sophisticates scoff at their earnest approach to life, religion, and family. Yet the methodical Mormon way, which stresses education, ambition, and charitable giving, has succeeded in ways equaled by few religious groups. Mormons enjoy levels of education and wealth higher than the national average, for example. Some 54 percent of LDS men and 44 percent of women have secured postsecondary education; the numbers for the general American population are 37 percent and 28 percent, respectively. Mormons also enjoy the nation’s highest rate of charitable giving.
