USpoliceYesterday’s 11am PST nationwide FEMA radio alert made many people of all political persuasions sit up and take notice.  It appears that the federal hardwired capability to control content on all broadcast media is now in place, is operational, and (here’s the interesting part) ready to be exercised with non-emergency content.

Infowars.com reports (here) that this technology demonstration is just the first step in a systematic government takeover of all broadcast and internet media via existing executive orders.  The claim is made that the feds have already notified all radio stations to “prepare for multiple hours per day” of government programming.   Sorta like the street propaganda and patriotic music loudspeakers on city streets in totalitarian countries.

Even though the technology exists and is in place, the whole affair seems a little farfetched; don’t we all have ‘Not in America!’ ringing in our ears?

How about some basic tests and standards for those that run for office?
After watching and listening to Bachmann, Perry and Cain it’s clear we could use some standards!

RL you never answered the questions. As for me pontificating, no, I have an opinion just as you have an elbow. BTW, what is a vegetable colored citizen?
Enos, there should have been a test prior to your campaigning and winning in Grass Valley. What would we have found if you had been tested?

I responded to your post and you complain. Are you saying you are not personally attacking the people in your post?

Of course there are some people who should not be able to vote, Todzilla. The mentally incompetent, felons, (at least until the terms of their sentence have been fulfilled), zombies, primates, and non-citizens. Did I not say that one should have a valid ID at the polling place?
George seems to think we need a higher standard. Should you be a property owner to vote on taxes? Should there be some written test to determine one’s knowledge of the Constitution? Enlighten us, George.

    Steve E,
Your comment “How about some basic tests and standards for those that run for office? After watching and listening to Bachmann, Perry and Cain it’s clear we could use some standards!”
I’m sure it was said in jest but the voter will take care of these candidates. The question will come next election cycle whether or not partisanship will win the day or will the people finally figure out their voting freedom/ liberty has been taken from them by being forced to vote for party over their best interests and party over country? When we vote for the lesser of two evils we surrender one of our most basic freedoms, to have a say in our government that affects our lives on a daily basis.

Well Bob, back in the real old days the voters were supposed to be only smart enough to recognize someone smarter than themselves. The republican form of government was supposed to take care of the rest (how higher level decisions were made and more complex laws passed).
Now the politicians duck the hard questions and throw them back at the voters. Reading and understanding spoken English seems to be a skill required to understand what you’re voting for. Understanding the basics of how our government is structured seems reasonable to ask. Understanding the basics of how and from whom governments get money should be included. Understanding from where money comes from in a society/economy would not hurt. Basically, I’m talking about very fundamental things that every kid would have learned in high school. Nothing approaching an IQ test.
But arriving at a polling place clueless, and marking the ballot according to the wishes of a friend or relative subverts the whole system in my mind. Of course, the voter should be unambiguously be able to demonstrate identity, citizenship, and residency. I don’t want to impose any requirements for material possessions.
This conversation can only proceed between people who believe that the present voting system is essentially broken. It goes nowhere when one party holds that all is well and we should just stay the course.

In an ideal world, everyone would understand what makes our nation work. In an ideal world, honor and justice would be upheld. The truth is that we do not live in that place yet. We never have. The best we can do is stumble forward and work to make America a better place.
As you know, I have rejected the two-party duopoly, which I see as the barrier that divides us. I’m certainly not right all the time, but I do what I can. There will always be those who don’t pay attention, and those who abuse freedom. Still, I can’t see telling a free-born citizen of the United States he or she can’t vote. You know, we are all created equal. You take the good with the bad. Otherwise, we create two classes of citizenship. Isn’t that what we are trying to avoid?

Well said BobRL. I don’t mean to sound glib in my 923pm; attempting to limit the franchise further is a difficult issue to undertake. We recall that we already do have limits on who can vote – for example we don’t let the institutionally criminal or insane vote, and until fairly recently the minimum voting age was 21. Did we do ourselves a favor by reducing it to 18 on the specious argument that ‘if you’re old enough to die for your country, you’re old enough to vote.’ – why not sixteen, fourteen, ten?
I agree with you that minimal enforcement, such as proof of citizenship and identity, should be implemented immediately. But it seems to me that some awareness of what people vote for should be required in these increasingly complex times for citizens to practice that holy of holies in a democratic republic.

George: having actually worked at a radio station and dealt with the EAS system on many occasions, I’ve seen no proof that they are part of the grand conspiracy that you guys are trying to elude too. On the other hand, all one has to do is to read through the pages of RR and other right wing blogs to see how you guys pivot from conspiracy to conspiracy to conspiracy as a justification for your paranoia and persecution complexes.
Now lets compare that to the times when people showed actual proof that the government was engaging in illegal domestic surveillance and wiretapping. These efforts were more often than not aimed at groups you usually love to denigrate. When people complained, the regressive echo chamber shouted them down, questioned their patriotism and their very right to live in America. Frankly, it’s hard to take any of you seriously anymore.

Mike, what is the point? These guys are so insane that they are more than willing to attribute the most evil of intentions to the most benign of activities. George even equates my position with being an accomplice of the Nazi takeover of Germany up above. Fortunately no one gives a _____what these guys think.

If the shoe fits, as I said above.
It was George who implied FEMA testing the EMS is “the first step in a systematic government takeover of all broadcast and internet media”. It was Mikey who said, “I am sure FEMA is subliminally peppering us with anecdotes like “there is no unemployment” or “its Bush’s fault” …”. It was George who re-posted. “The claim is made that the feds have already notified all radio stations to “prepare for multiple hours per day” of government programming. Sorta like the street propaganda and patriotic music loudspeakers on city streets in totalitarian countries.”
This is just such an obvious paranoid delusion that it cannot go unnoticed.

I do this for fun, Steve. There is absolutely no hope that the “Gang of 8” will change any of their perspectives or positions. They’ve walked themselves and each other into a corner that they can’t get out of. The good news is that, if it weren’t for Enos, You, the Emeries and Crabb all RR would be left with is a right wing circle jerk, wrapped in faux intellectualism and patriotism.

There is certainly no hope that either Frisch or Thornton will show significant signs of sentience. The both of you are so busy trying to intuit what was “implied” you ignore what is actually written.

Arriving at a presidential debate without knowing all three of the departments you want to eliminate should eliminate you from the debate. That’s like passing the ball to the opposing team as you are trying to dig out from your own two year line, or possibly having too many libations to remember Libya or China’s nuke capability. That those two are still in the running speaks volumes about the intelligence of the average voter.
