So what? This will have the same net effect as cutting off one of a sea star’s arms. The remaining parts of the organisms will be little affected and the removed portions will grow back.

Obama forgot to mention HIS blunder from earlier today in his “I, I, I, I, I, I, I, got Osama” speech…
“Libyans burn UK, Italy missions after NATO strike- AP
Angry mobs attacked Western embassies and a U.N. office in Tripoli Sunday after NATO bombed Moammar Gadhafi’s family compound in an attack officials said killed the leader’s second youngest son and three grandchildren, ages six months to two years.”

I’m going to be watching with great delight as the right wing and its echo machine look for a way to spin this against Obama.
And by the way George, do you just wait for any excuse you can find to engage in racist name calling?

    Stratfor Analysis:
The United States has killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and recovered his body, according to numerous media reports May 1 citing U.S. officials. U.S. President Barack Obama is scheduled to make an announcement on the subject. It is not clear precisely how bin Laden was killed or how his body was recovered, but the assertion that he is dead is significant.
Bin Laden had become the symbol of al Qaeda, even though the degree to which he commanded the organization was questionable. The symbolic value of his death is obvious. The United States can claim a great victory. Al Qaeda can proclaim his martyrdom.
It is difficult to understand what this means at this moment, but it permits the Obama administration to claim victory, at least partially, over al Qaeda. It also opens the door for the beginning of a withdrawal from Afghanistan, regardless of the practical impact of bin Laden’s death. The mission in Afghanistan was to defeat al Qaeda, and with his death, a plausible claim can be made that the mission is complete. Again speculatively, it will be interesting to see how this affects U.S. strategy there.
Equally possible is that this will trigger action by al Qaeda in bin Laden’s name. We do not know how viable al Qaeda is or how deeply compromised it was. It is clear that bin Laden’s cover had been sufficiently penetrated to kill him. If bin Laden’s cover was penetrated, then the question becomes how much of the rest of the organization’s cover was penetrated. It is unlikely, however, that al Qaeda is so compromised that it cannot take further action.
At this early hour, the only thing possible is speculation on the consequences of bin Laden’s death, and that speculation is inherently flawed. Still, the importance of his death has its consequences. Certainly one consequence will be a sense of triumph in the United States. To others, this will be another false claim by the United States. For others it will be a call to war. We know little beyond what we have been told, but we know it matters.

I will be watching for –
    1. The fight for succession by al Qaeda lieutenants who will attempt to demonstrate their power and prowess by launching attacks against the west.
    2. The course of the current ‘Islamic Spring’, will it become focused on individual nation-states becoming more liberal and beneficial to their citizens, allowing them fulfillment in pursuing their own personal goal.
    3. The catalysis of the much-touted moderate Muslims worldwide, and especially in the US, to publicly denounce and actively resist their radical factions seeking a global Caliphate. Their silence to date has been deafening.
In sum, President Obama got this one right.

Hot Air has a series of reports on the breaking news here.
    Here is a sample:
Update (AP): The city where they got him is named Abbottabad. It’s not in the tribal areas; it’s in the northeastern part of the country, just 75 or so miles from the seat of government in Islamabad. A telling aside from O’s speech: He said that he called Pakistan’s president after the incident to let him know — which, presumably, means there wasn’t Pakistani cooperation after all. As I said earlier, relations between us will never be the same.
All credit to Obama, though, for pulling the trigger and sending troops in to take care of business. If OBL hadn’t been there or if things had gone wrong, this would have been an international clusterfark, especially given how deep they were inside the country. Well done.

Pelline wasn’t the only one making that slip of the tongue, Geraldo did exactly the same thing on Fox.
I’m a little confused about the above use of the term “racist.” My information is that the most troublesome of the Muslim communities are those loosly referred to as “Arabs,” though like most modern nations, the group includes some truly racial admixture. That said, Arabians, Iranians, Afghans, Pakistani, Egyptians, Libyans, Tunisians, Algerians and Morrocons and most Indians (whose populace includes the largest national population of Muslims on Earth are all cacusians- white people for the truly ignorant. Most, not all Arabs are of the Semitic branch, like the Israelis. How does calling a misbehaved bunch of white trash “ragheads” come to be classified as “racism”? ‘Splain me, please. L

While this will certainly boost Obama’s short term ratings, it will be the economy that will be his down fall. As the Clinton staff wrote on the wall “It is the Economy Stupid” And it will be the economy again that insures that Obama is a one term President. No one pumping $5 dollar gas in 2012 is going to remember who got Osama! Or care. We all vote our wallets, not who got Osama.

Before you release the balloons for the early inaugeration Jeff, you might remember that twenty years ago George Bush the elder was riding high from the ouster of Saddam from Kuwait. His reelection looked so bulletproof that most prominent Democrats decided to sit out the ’92 campaign, giving the nomination to a backwater Governor nobody ever heard of.
The battle cry of the campaign was “It’s the economy, stupid!”
Throw in a rich independent candidate and you got a contest. Obama will win or lose depending on how many people are still unemployed by November, 2012.

Precisely Mr Crabb. The “It’s the economy stupid” line still applies.
Kudus to Obama though for at least taking action. If my memory serves me, Bill Clinton had the opportunity and failed to take action. And Obama’s helicopter mission has turned out better than Jimmy Carter’s helicopter mission in Iran.
Looks like Obama might have just barely escaped being the worst President in modern history.

By ending the myth of Osama’s invulnerability, recruiting new blood will be more difficult. My guess would be that Obama, being the chess player that he is, didn’t charge right in. No internet or phones ? no, not physically there, but I’m sure Osama stayed connected, at least for inbound traffic, using cables snaking out from the compound to other locations nearby. Obama’s Intelligence Operations would have found those nearby sites, and milked those for everything he could, and then released his birth certificate probably within the same hour he gave the go ahead to Special Forces/Navy SEALS. The information gleaned between August 2010 and now may result in a whole series of additional precision hits.
Trump actually played a small but important part. By stirring up the birther activity, and seemingly provoking Obama into releasing his, the Play’s the thing!
Osama thought Obama was hopelessly tied up in trivia, and was probably a little lax around the compound.
It’s wildly possible Obama and Trump worked together on this, wouldn’t that be The Great American Sting!

New York Times on the economy.
It has long been clear that economists do not see the world the way people experience it. That disconnect is especially pronounced now.
The economy lost steam in the first quarter. Growth in personal consumption — the single largest component of the economy — slowed markedly. Business-related construction cratered and residential construction fell. Exports stumbled. The only unambiguous plus was continued business investment in equipment and software, which is necessary but not sufficient for overall growth.
In all, economic growth slowed from an annual rate of 3.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010 to 1.8 percent in the first quarter of 2011.

Our local left thinks that killing Osama will be good for the economy and assure his re-election. How is personal consumption going to increase, because Osama is dead. Personal consumption has slowed because people have run out of money. How will the death of Osama restore these funds? What am I missing?

Several hours after the news broke, the Daily News hit the streets with a big picture of bin laden on the front page with the headline “Rot In Hell”. The last word was in bold 4″ type. I pray that the economy goes through the roof and that our country can actually spend what we take in. This is a great victory for the Obama administration. We can talk about the economy later this week after we are done celebrating.

Why can’t you guys just admit that President Obama handled this thing correctly?
When you read some of the story leading up to OBL’s killing you have to realize that not only did Obama make the correct call, but the smart and courageous ones as well!
    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2011/05/president-obama-had-authorized-bombing-of-compound-in-march-but-wanting-evidence-of-obls-death-cance.html

Let’s face it, Obama did what your boy Bush couldn’t get done and it says a lot more about you than it does of President, that you simply can’t just say “Good Job!” and move on.

What impact this will have on the ongoing Islamic assault on Western Civ remains to be seen. Effect on the 2012 election, probably nil.
