It may turn out that the recent Chile, New Zealand, and now Japan earthquakes are related to some greater movement of the whole Pacific system of tectonic plates. Geologist Jim Berkland has an outstanding record of analysing these patterns and earthquake predictions. He is talking to Fox's Neil Cavuto about what may be happening here in North America. “Contrary to some reports circulating the Internet,” says NASA, “perigee Moons do not trigger natural disasters. The “super moon” of March 1983, for instance, passed without incident. And an almost-super Moon in Dec. 2008 also proved harmless.”
Some of Geologist Jim Berkland predictions have not happened, specifically an eruption at Yellowstone.

IMHO as I mentioned on your site we have had quite a few large quakes all around that plate. We also not long ago had the plate in Haiti move and that hasn’t moved in quite along time and never produced little quakes, just seems to be a whole lot a shake’in goin on. Chile and the one in Baja may have been because of that one moving though.

For what it’s worth, I recall that the 9 Feb 1971 Northridge quake happened just after a lunar eclipse. I remember wondering then if the extreme tide conditions which come at such times could lessen the weight of water over the land and allow the plates to slip. People thought I was crazy to imagine such a thing. Stick around long enough and speculation becomes science.

From a purely technical point of view, tidal forces on the earth’s crust do cause both strains (actual movements) and stresses (build up forces). The theory here being that if something was already ‘cocked’ and ready to go, then such tidal events could be the trigger. And if things weren’t quite ready to go, then tidal events could also ‘cock’ the junction of two plates. That such global forces do not affect the propensity of tectonic plates to slip is a notion that needs to be defended.

When you think of the amount energy necessary to lift the ocean, it’s not surprising.
