RL strikes again. Having been the subject of a Crabb cartoon, I know that you just need to laugh, as that is what political cartoons are all about.
I particularly like the picture of George…very funny.

Now that the cheers, jeers and gnashing of teeth have subsided, I’ll respond to the comments on Tuesday’s cartoon. I am an editorial cartoonist (muckraker to some) and anyone who knows me or has read my chicken-scratchings over the years knows that I have strong opinions about politics and bad behavior, and that I will gladly gore any sacred cow regardless of which side on the fence he or she chews their cud on.
I am an independent contractor and my cartoons appear in the local newspaper. The subject matter is mine and mine alone, and may or may not conflict with positions the paper has chosen to take. They have never pushed me to take one side or another. Have I been rejected? Yes, maybe three times over the course of thirteen years. Not a bad track record.
Recently, one blogger in particular accused the paper and the reporters of being biased, bad reporting, and me personally for “coddling” racists. Many people are critical of the paper and there are times I agree with them, but not this time. In my opinion, the blogger was way off base. I found his criticism distorted, convoluted and hypocritical. He called me a phony, and that my comments “sickened” him. Well, one cheap shot deserves another.
Having said that, it is also my opinion that all the local blogs have sunk to a new low. The conversations degenerate into endless, repetitive name-calling. If you haven’t noticed, the country, and the world, are teetering on the edge of total collapse while you bash each other. Many of the more thoughtful commenters have left the fray, and others are leaning that way. Our community needs cooperation, not confrontation. We’ll all need each other if we are going to survive in this new world.
This will be my last cartoon on the subject of local blogs. I can find more fruitful endeavors to occupy my time. From now on, my cartoons will be my voice in the community, as long as I can hold a pen.

โ€œThe post concludes with this summary of the Waxman-Markey-Inslee argument as follows:
We know what is good for America and the world. Itโ€™s a future without fossil fuels. We canโ€™t persuade the peopleโ€™s representatives to support our agenda and turn it into law. Therefore, it is necessary for EPA to implement our agenda regardless of the defeat of cap-and-trade, the November 2011 elections, and the separation of powers. Our agenda is more important than any constitutional principle that might interfere with it.

    Barry,
โ€ข”He used to be a Democrat and changed to Republican a few years ago,” is what Bob’s friend said.
โ€ขAnd you’re wrong about my voting record. I voted on a DS ballot last year. In fact, just to be sure, I just checked with the CR’s office to confirm that. They can confirm it for you too! In addition, though it’s not a matter of public record, I voted for Doug LaMalfa and said so on my blog.

So, Jeff, who was the last non-Democrat you’ve voted for Senator or President?
In speaking at local waterholes with the esteemed R.L. I’ve not gotten a whiff of him being Republican, and we were talking politics.
The funniest affectation among modern US journalists is that somehow registering decline-to-state is a badge of non-partisanship; all it means is you’re not telling what your partisanship may lean: plausible deniability is not high journalistic standards.

If you voted a DS ballot, LaMalfa would not have been on it. Nice try.
Question: While you were calling to confirm your lie, did you confirm that RL is a DS instead of talking to “Bob’s friend?” Answer: No.

    Barry,
Who’s the liar here? I voted on a DS ballot in the June election (when I also voted against you), and the clerk-recorder’s office can confirm that for you. In fact, I encourage any of the readers to confirm that with the CR’s office and report back, thus exposing your “lie” that I voted the Democratic ballot each primary that I moved here. I voted for LaMalfa in the November election when he ran against a Democrat. Again, it was Bob’s friend, who knows him well from Shifters, who said: “”He used to be a Democrat and changed to Republican a few years ago.”

For the record, I was registered Democrat from 1972 to 2002, when I switched to Republican. I did this because it gave me the opportunity to vote against John Doolittle twice. I changed to DTS at the town hall meeting on Healthcare hosted by the Tea Party. In the last election, I voted for two Republicans (Cooley and Maldonado), two Dems (Lockyer and Bowen) and the rest Libertarian or Peace and Freedom.
    Hope that clears the air.

Bob, I sincerely hope that you will reconsider those sentiments about covering the local blog scene. Yes, the comment threads get a little tacky when they sink to naked name calling. But a careful perusal of the posts here will reveal that RR posts, while occasionally taking their positions to task, do not besmirch other bloggers by name.
Bending us all in turn over your knee from time to time has been a positive and bracing experience. At least that is what this old dinosaur thinks.

Blogs are now part of the political landscape and should be observe with your sharp eye and rapier pen. Please continue to expose those that need to be brought up short. I agree that there is too much name calling in the comment, but there are some interesting ideas worth discussing the body of many posts. I have to agree with George, take us over you knee when ever necessary,

That was a bold political commentary for RL Crabb to make. He sure didnโ€™t make any friends with Jeff Pellineโ€™s Purple People. In the spirit of Bobโ€™s expose perhaps we should make an effort to tone down our discourse.
Though it can be entertaining to read, sometimes the rhetorical bomb throwing getโ€™s a bit much.
Assuming RL Crabbโ€™s commentary has a positive influence on โ€œThe Purple Peopleโ€, perhaps we should reciprocate?
Given our small town, and the seriousness of current events, Iโ€™m hoping that animosity meter will go downโ€”at least for a while.

SteveE – you are a conundrum to us all here on RR. You comments never address the ideas in the posted article, but constantly and monotonously carp on the behavior of other readers and my conduct of this blog. The writing of such endless comments must also be wearing on you.
Why don’t you give it a rest and accede that the other readers are incorrigible, and the best plan forward is to just avoid the lot of them?
BTW, in the quote of what I wrote, I adhere to the convention that a โ€˜postโ€™ on a blog is the titled article. What the readers subsequently contribute are โ€˜commentsโ€™. Admittedly this may be confusing because the term โ€˜post a commentโ€™ is also in use. In that light, I do my best to avoid calling any specific person a pejorative name in the articles I post. But I often identify pejorative classes into which the reader can insert any specific person(s) they wish.
And I have noticed that you also have ceased personal name calling on RR – now if we can next work on shifting your remarks back to the posted topic, I wonder how the rest of the readership would react to that. I continue to believe that you have a material contribution to make to the topics and ideas you find on these pages.

George… as a recent example, under the story you did about what you call wormfarm II I posted about the local banking issue you raised in your story. I posted about specific issues regarding Citizen’s Bank .. a on topic post.
Regardless of what I post the result is personal attacks and off topic, name calling by a couple of your regular posters… that being Todd and Dixon.
George this is a fact and you must know this to be true, you are not a stupid person George. One can review my past posts and the resulting off topic, personal posts by Todd and Dixon, regardless of what I post.
This is the truth and you refuse to address Tood and Dixon and their off topic, name calling, personal attack posts.
So George, how about you posting a shout out right here to Todd and Dixon to clean up their act here? Will you hold them accountable?

SteveE, I reread the comment thread on my 4mar11 post on community partnership banking (Union column). In it you take me to task for not covering another topic having to do with a local bank. You often do that, and thatโ€™s OK. (I have limited space in the Union and my selection of the topic and its treatment is sacrosanct.) Your criticisms of me and presentation of your points were civil, and the response they received from other commenters were equally civil.
All was going well in the discussion thread until Mr Frisch showed up with his insinuations against the other commenters. Well, Frisch does not have too good of a reputation on these pages as either a clear thinker or a civil discussant, and there is a distinct group of RR readers whose hackles are easily raised by people of such persuasion, talent, and demeanor. For that reason he is among the dear departed from these pages โ€“ it just wasnโ€™t worth the aggravation that his hubristic participation (note his perennial dramatic exits promising never to return) engendered. Besides, he just pissed me off one too many times.
Now on that same 4mar11 comment thread, I didnโ€™t see anyone calling you names. They did point out the diversion that you were creating with Citizens Bank, but that was a valid response in such a discussion. So Iโ€™m still at a loss as to what your personal complaint is about the example that you cited. My strong feeling is that if you frequent RR with a civil tongue, stick to the issues, and minimize directed moralizing, then the readers about whom you complain will be equally civil toward you. It seems to have worked in the past.
Finally, I may be wrong, but too often I and others get the feeling that your prime motivation here is to carp about how I run this blog. That itself can become aggravating.

Steve, Pelline let Doug Keachie, a retired San Fran teacher with what appears to be a roaring case of adult attention disorder and a dozen or more sock puppets over at The Union blogs, pound me with libelous ad hominems over and over. Todd and Dixon’s pointed posts pale in comparison to what the Wingnut Big Boy both dishes out and encourages. How about less of a double standard from you and yours?
That said, Todd, you should think more and attack less.

RL Crabb has now discovered what happens when you cross or disagree with the FUE. Yes, we on the right get into heated debates and we defend ourselves vigorously when necessary but if you read the exchange on the FUE’s blog with Crabb then you can understand what precipitated the cartoon. I find it interesting that we so called “hard right” conservatives are the one’s doing the praising. Kind of of flows against the conformity doesn’t it?.
