So laments William Rivers Pitt of truthout.com, one of the most extreme leftwing commentators in my experience.  He starts his latest screed on the Wisconsin legislature’s attempt to balance the state’s budget that has suffered under the largesse extracted by its public service unions.  Pitt revs into gear with the now famous aphorism that ends in “.. and then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me.”  In full rage he condemns –

Governor Scott Walker, along with the Koch Brothers and the right-wing radicals of the Republican Party, moved in darkness and with shameless deceit to gut the ability of dedicated laborers to bargain on an equal footing for the right to earn a living wage and to have access to decent health care.

Kinda sounds like some of the local lefties when they’re in fine fettle with a full head of steam on.

In today’s (10mar11) WSJ, Governor Scott Walker writes ‘Why I’m Fighting in Wisconsin’ and lays bare some of the hard data that illustrate the fiscal and personal thuggeries perpertrated by that state’s teachers unions.  I don’t think that any of his arguments will make a dent in the screaming hordes bussed into the Madison capitol building.  They are calling for “revolution” in this country a la the violence that is happening in the Arab autocracies of Africa and the near-east.

We compare this with the more reasoned national discussions about the Great Divide (see category on right) which I have posted in these pages.  In public discourse, the collectivist’s historical route to violence has always been a short one.  The calls for revolution today are of a piece with this strategy, and should give us pause as we consider the future role of public service employee unions in our future.

[update] Today the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported a union death threat received by a Wisconsin state senator – “We have all planned to assault you by arriving at your house and putting a nice little bullet in your head.”  Can you imagine the nationwide apoplexy in the lamestream media if anyone from the right would have uttered such words?  Instead, the lamestream was silent.

Apropos to this, today in these pages I received a 'comment' from a prominent local leftwinger that in part reads, “…but rest assured the community knows who you really are, and what you believe, and will act accordingly.”  Do they all talk like this?

[11mar2011 update]  While the FBI is investigating more liberal death threats against Wisconsin Republicans, that peace-loving progressive propagandizing populist Michael Moore has called for the nation’s high schoolers to hit the streets today and demonstrate in solidarity with the revolution he wants to start on these shores.  For the full unedited text of the email from which the above death threat was quoted visit the website of WTMJ Newsradio.  Notice the silence from the 'middle of the road' lamestream.

[12mar2011 update]  This story just gets more and more crisp on the kind of people the left has always mobilized to 'get their message out'.  These public service unionists, and who knows what other criminals have been imported to up the body count, are out and out thugs.  Powerlineblog.com has more on it.  H/T to RR reader.

Mr. Pitt states that this is a fight for labor’s ability to bargain on an equal footing for the right to earn a living wage. If the unions were bargaining with a business that could be said, but in this instance, the unions are bargaining with J”oe Six Pack” (the taxpayer) for higher wages and benefits. When public sector workers make twice as much as their private sector counterparts, “Joe Six Pack” is the one getting the shaft…not the “evil corporations,” as the lefties would say.

Mr. Pitt and his ilk are sounding a bit violent, intolerant, and uncivil. Michael Moore was recommending a revolution yesterday.
Based on how the left/the unions have played WI to date, violence will work to their favor. Ultimately the whole nation will suffer if it comes to violence.
An unfortunate consequence of the great advances made in our nation is that huge numbers of people have become so soft that they are unable to effectively deal with negative events. Too many people have lost the ability ‘suck it up’. We need another “Great Communicator” to remind the left that we’re all in a tight spot and so we ALL have to share some of the pain.
Perhaps NPR could air a marathon of The Waltons.

The public workers in Wisconsin pay nothing compared to what we in California had to pay for our retirement and medical. They should be ashamed of their chanting about their “rights”. I see very little intelligent coverage of what goes on in Madison by MSNBC or NPB – Fox is clearly more fair and clear. Union violence and thugery is omitted from the lame stream coverage. By the way – what happened to the Dems insistence on being nice and polite? OOPS! Like all liberal and Dem deeply held beliefs – a million miles wide and a micron deep. And that’s being generous about the micron.

Their most pissed about the state not collecting the dues money and the fact that the teachers and such will not be required to join, as its mandatory now. Stroking a check for grand will get stuck in some craws I would bet, setting up auto debits will make it softer.
Florida is on it as well now and thats about all we have is PEU’s

Where is the outrage from the former editor of The Union? Oh yeah…this threat was directed at a Republican so it is all good.

That’s his audience, high schoolers and those with retarded development. This is so pathetic. It’s hard to watch ageing hippies longing for days gone by and trying to claw back their youth.

And the progressives call the tea party movement ‘fringe’ ‘radical’ ‘hate’! Hypocrites! Could you imagine the media rampage if Glenn Beck called for violent revolution like Michael Moore! Hypocrites! Civility is not a trait used to describe the looters. Walker is a stud making tough (and needed) choices. The conservative rallys i have been to have all been very civil; nothing like these animal union members who have been caught stealing.

And just what is the “trade” in this case? Looking at the wiki, I don’t see “public schoolteacher” or “DMV clerk” in the list of tradesmen.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tradesman
Tradesmen historically are involved in commerce, not government work.

Repercussions would be monumental for The Unions and The Democrats if violence escalates.

John its already over I think, they operate like the Mafia and this has opened a wound for all America to see. Both the unions and the Senators literally showed their ass to the world, there is no winning on this one. It wasn’t even a company vs the union, it was American taxpayers vs PEU’s big difference, the quote “middle america” that pays the taxes and their salaries and benies – all this opened up what they actually recieve and what they want. – not pretty – they educated America – stick a fork in them their done.

Dixon, that is a very hopeful assessment, and I sincerely hope that you are right. However, the Dems feel that this “assault on unions” will vitalize the left’s base of hard core socialists and double dummies with notions like ‘violating workers’ rights’. They are celebrating Wisconsin as “exposing” the monied interests, and finally giving the progressives a hot button issue that will camouflage Obama’s first term failures.

Your correct Steve on it being a war, its a war on the middle class not the PEU’s though. The other private sector unions are actually pretty insignificant since they ran most of their business’es oversea’s already. They then went to the PEU’s which obviously can’t move to Mexico or China, so this war is the PEU unions vs Middle America. MA has disappeared not for the lack of PEU’s but because of them. MA has been sucked dry by excessive taxes, fee’s and regulations brought on by ever increasing need to fund the beast.
I think the attack Steve must refer to is the Mandatory membership – the mandatory collection of dues to fund polical operations to hire the public contract negiators. I guess they don’t want to give the membership the opportunity to actually vote to see if they want the union to actually represent them. Maybe they won’t – Mandatory is always better I guess but I did think this was America, where we are supposed to have some freedom of choice.
I can’t see asking for 5% for health care and chipping in for a sweet pension being considered an assault.

Dixon, recap… it was not I that said it was an “attack”, it was George that stated this when he posted… “Governor Scott Walker’s bill, now signed into law, is “an assault on the unions”. Belated and focused too narrowly on the PELUs, I would fully agree that it is”.
Also my use of the word “war” was in the following context, no need for you to post what you think I was “refering to”, as you are wrong.
George was correct when he said…”this “assault on unions” will vitalize the left’s base”.
It was a bridge too far… someone did not read “The Art of War”. They over reached and over reaching is a big mistake, a mistake warned against in “The Art of War”.
    George was correct.
