Hard to come up with another alternative.  Do we stiff the Chinese and then fight them?  Or do we stick by our obligations to them as our prime creditor, and become an economic colony of China to pay off our debt?  You know, sort of like we were in the 18th century to Britain, to whom we didn’t owe a penny.

    George,
Thanks for posting this. I have received several requests to post at NCMW. I will just point them to your post.

Ah yes, the Chinese…Funny how our country has changed its attitude toward the Dragon in my lifetime.
When I was a kid in the fifties I was always told to clean my plate because there were children starving in China. I always resented those children for making me eat Brussel sprouts, and it’s stuck with me all these years. Thanks to the brutal Nixon and the geo-political realities of the Cold War, that all changed in the seventies and the Chinese became our allies against the USSR.
It never changed my prejudice, though. Over the years I have done numerous cartoons warning of the Red Threat. My personal favorite was when China hosted the Olympics and I drew a picture of the five circles as a chain connected to shackles. (I’m still waiting for my Pulitzer for that one.) Just this Labor Day, I drew a monument to the American Worker, with small letters at the bottom saying “made in China.”
The right has never been too sympathetic. For years, the left has complained about the poor treatment of Tibet and the Dalai Lama, but it has always fallen on deaf ears. Just about every vehicle in San Francisco sports a “Save Tibet” bumper sticker, and I had one too on my old Ford Courier truck. Rednecks used to sneer at me for that, but they never understood my motivation.
You see, years ago some friends from Seattle met up with my wife and I in SF. My friends always wanted to enjoy the culinary diversity (multiculturalism?) of the City so we would humor them and go to whichever restaurant they chose. This particular time they wanted to try out Tibetan fare, so we did. The only thing I remember about that meal was my attempt to choke down curdled yak’s milk. It was so horrible I felt the need to help these backward people, so I picked a “Save Tibet” sticker on my way out.
    It’s all about the food.

I can’t fault the creditor to the extent I can the debtor. I do find irony in China using capitalism ‘against’ us.

The Democrats posturing on Tibet has changed. in 2009 the Chinese flooded the California legislature protesting the annual Senate resolution supporting the freedom of the people of Tibet causing the Dems to table the resolution at the last minute with several hundred Tibet supporters in the gallery. It was a Republican, Senator Sam Blakeslee who futilely supported the resolution and the people of Tibet. Here’s a good overview. http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=69876223534
I covered the story for KVMR. The Democratic response was that since Obama was President California no longer had to concern itself with human rights issues. The resolution died in Committee
