“It is seldom that liberty of any kind is lost all at once.” David Hume

FAHayek Nobelist F.A. Hayek wrote the 1944 classic The Road to Serfdom which is strongly recommended to all Americans, including non-calcified progressives, who care about the path our nation is on today.  Friend and RR reader Tony Medler sent me the following email which is reproduced here with his permission including the passages from Chapter 10 of the book.

While several of our group have previous exposure to the writings of Mr. Hayek, I feel fortunate to be reading him at a time when Obama and the socialist views bring home many of the points he makes.  In his chapter “Why the Worst Get on Top” the following two paragraphs really describe Obama’s base and a reason for his election:

“If, however, a potential dictator had to rely entirely on those whose uncomplicated and primitive instincts happen to be very similar, their number would scarcely give sufficient weight to their endeavors.  He will have to increase their numbers by converting more to the same simple creed.

Here comes in the second negative principle of selection: he will be able to obtain the support of all the docile and gullible, who have no strong convictions of their own but are prepared to accept a ready-made system of values if it is only drummed into their ears sufficiently loudly and frequently.  It will be those whose vague and imperfectly formed ideas are easily swayed and whose passions and emotions are readily aroused who will thus swell the ranks of the totalitarian party.”

How arrogant of you … That’s right. Everyone who voted for Obama is just “uncomplicated” and “gullible”. It couldn’t be that folks were simply smart enough to see how the previous GOP president allowed the pillage of our country to point our economy was on the brink of disaster, our armed forces spread so thin fighting two wars — one so unnecessary that his admin had to change the rationale for fighting it
on at least three occasions — and our status in around the globe in tatters. You have every right to disagree with Obama’s policy, but to suggest he gained power be because too many of our brothers and sisters are “uncomplicated” and “gullible” is so arrogant that it sounds like the “elitists” your Tea Party clan have been railing against since it’s inception. Do you really believe he pulled some bait and switch with voters? For crying out loud the actions he’s taken — including your “socialized” healthcare — is what he ran on and was elected to do. Go ahead and dissent, but Dude … Your guy lost the election and the reason for it is much more complicated than Americans being simply too “gullible.” But perhaps being among the intellectually elite, you just know better than the rest of us 300 million patriots.

I don’t think the effects that Hayek (and Bryan Caplan, etc) speak about requires one to assume “everyone”, but enough to tip the scales. And yes, Obama is putting in place certain things he promised, but doing it in a fashion that he misrepresented, and against majority public opinion when their content is revealed/discovered. Bush was no paragon of conservative thought, but another Republican progressive.
Given the country’s 310 million or so population, who are the 300 million patriots, and what do they believe?

Nuff said, if I had comments of such “weak sauce” I would not sign my real name either.

most of the people that elected Obama voted for the free ice cream pitch – unfortunately the wiser of the populous knows there’s no free lunch. Reforming healthcare was needed, although a government takeover wasn’t what they thought it meant – can anybody actually count how many campaign promises he has actually kept? thats a much smaller number than the broken ones – I can’t think of but one – Fundamentally Change America
