This morning you could not find a parking place within a quarter mile of the Holiday Inn Express in Grass Valley.  The event was the Small Business & Entrepreneur Seminar sponsored by our very own Economic Resource Council.  Speaking to an SRO assembly of small business owners, entrepreneurs, and those thinking about sticking their toe into business ownership was an array of qualified speakers from various local jurisdictions and NGOs all leaning forward to help get something going and going stronger to help our community prosper.

ERCseminar

Officiating in his finest fettle was Mr Gil Mathew the CEO and head honcho of ERC.  Gil has to be one of our community’s finest gentlemen who is constantly giving of himself to build Nevada County and help others enjoy the business success that he himself created right here where we all live.

I was also particularly impressed by the presentations of Nevada City councilwoman Sally Harris and Grass Valley Mayor Lisa Swarthout.  They spoke about their own business experiences here in Nevada County and how they used available government assisted financing to get things going.  Both women were knowledgeable about their subject and gave a clear, complete, and concise accounting of how it was done.  I am heartened that we have electeds in office with such business backgrounds.

And for you out there contemplating the use of other people’s money to start or grow your business, contact the city halls of Nevada City, Grass Valley, and even the county’s Rood Center to see if you can get your meat hooks into some of the cash they have waiting there for folks just like you.

All in all, it was another good and well-received gathering to promote local wealth generation and prosperity for the place we all call home.  Thank you ERC.

Meathooks? George, you crack me up. It appears that sometimes, the government is good for something. The word I get around town is that many businesses are just hanging on and hoping for better times. (Like Walker’s)

Yes, that is the word I also get Bob (see Russ’s blog on Walker’s).
And yes, government is good for many things, but it is not necessarily true that the more it does the better it is. When we see the folks in Ohio funding job development subsidies in Nevada County, and consider what the private sector could do with that money had it not been exacted, it isn’t always clear that such subsidies are the best solution for our ills in these mountains. As von Mises and Bastiat taught us long ago, when the government appears to grant us largesse, most of us automatically genuflect with gratitude because we never see or even consider the benefits bestowed from alternative applications of those monies by their original owners.

    George,
Thanks very much for your analysis of the Small Business and Entrepreneur Seminar. I was planning to attend but my own business operations kept me from it, so reading your blog this evening was very helpful. Great report.
You are certainly correct about what Gil has done for this community, he really cares about this place. Steve Frisch posted a comment on Russ’ blog this morning about the new entrepreneur–take a look if you haven’t already. He is right on the money, describing how capitalism is no longer the enemy with this new generation of business builders, and libertarianism (with a small “l”) loudly resonates. And yet, they see the necessity of gov’t stimulus when private capital is not available for whatever reasons.
I don’t think we’re ready to hold hands in a Big Nevada County Love Circle and sing Kumbaya just yet, but your post was most heartening. Thanks again.

I was thinking virtually the same thing during the presentations and came home and told Kim…I agree with you.

I can’t say enough good things about Gil Mathew, but, it is sad when entrepreneurs look to taxpayers to prime their pumps. At least 2 of my tenets keep me from applauding the use of government funds to start businesses. 1.) Such efforts are funded by an immoral progressive tax system 2.) I don’t trust government types to divvy up my taxes efficiently and without the use of collusion or corruption
