ShelbySteele Western civilization is under attack from many directions.   One of the reasons that we are measurably losing on most fronts is that we have lost the moral authority to defend ourselves.  So argues Shelby Steele, author and senior fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, in the 21jun10 WSJ (here).  He writes –

“… the entire Western world has suffered from a deficit of moral authority for decades now. Today we in the West are reluctant to use our full military might in war lest we seem imperialistic; we hesitate to enforce our borders lest we seem racist; we are reluctant to ask for assimilation from new immigrants lest we seem xenophobic; and we are pained to give Western Civilization primacy in our educational curricula lest we seem supremacist. Today the West lives on the defensive, the very legitimacy of our modern societies requiring constant dissociation from the sins of the Western past—racism, economic exploitation, imperialism and so on.”

We are paying doubly under this administration which has mobilized the country’s dissidents, and is organizing them into cadres preparing America for a future where its sovereignty and European heritage will remain only as dark pages in the revised history of an age that no longer beckons anyone.  As for great cilizations of the past, our greatest threat comes from within.

It’s a tough balancing act, looking at our past. The United States has a lot to be proud of and a lot to be ashamed of. By confronting our shortcomings we are able to correct past injustices. Many nations sugercoat their history, and are therefore doomed to repeat it.

Given the Westernization of the world’s culture this is quite a confused set of claims.
