Stupak Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI) presents at the same time the best and worst views of a professional politician.  This man has pandered his voters for years on the notion that he was like most of them, against the federal funding of abortion.  Suddenly nationalized healthcare hung in the balance.  Then, recognizing the man for what he is, Obama invited Stupak to the White House and took him to the wood shed behind the Rose Garden.  There he explained the matter of Obamacare and Stupak’s chances of spending the rest of the year in the House broom closet working off of a card table by candle light.  Obama made clear what kind of support the party would give him for his re-election in November, and then reminded him that he probably wasn’t qualified for a job as checkout clerk at the local Home Depot.

It didn’t take all that much for a very chastened Stupak to emerge from that little ‘conference’, find the nearest array of microphones, and sing the party line like a canary.  And the seven or eleven or … moral midgets who had been following him around, all dutifully also fell in line.  The rest is history, including today’s signing of the executive joke for which the congressman sold his soul.

In the end, Obama was merciful in delivering the coup de grace.  He conceded to Stupak’s request that the signing be done behind closed doors with no press or photographers present.  The last thing Stupak wanted was the picture of him standing behind a grinning Obama, putting the presidential signature on a toilet paper roll.

Actually, Obama had a little self-interest in not publicizing spineless politicians in the Oval Office.  He will undoubtedly have to use this ruse again, and the memory of Stupak the Stupid plastered across front pages, blogs, and TV screens nationwide may stiffen opposition by future swallowers of this bitter pill.

But for the rest of us snuffies out here in Voterland, this should serve as a good reminder of the so-called principled people we send to Washington and the states’ capitals.  Almost all of them are stupid or spineless, or both.  Most illuminating.

    Elections have consequences.
This is what you get for cheering on Bush for 8 years and failing to address what the President and the V.P. were doing to our Country and the world.
I do hope that George and his clan keep up and even increase their hateful, nasty name calling, personal attacks, threats and even a growing number of acts of violence. Just keep moving hard right as fast as possible.
The faster the better as the American middle is getting tired of the screaming, nasty and violent tantrums and the clan of just saying no.

SteveE, “threats”, “acts of violence”?? what in hell are you talking about? If you want to comment on my post, do so. If you want to post something on another topic, let me know. What is your point? Copying and pasting irrelevant news stories does not contribute. If you disagree, make the case and paste a link. As I promised you in a previous comment thread, I will delete this kind of material.

George, here’s the “connection”. Attack Stupak, do some name calling and add it to this…
Democratic lawmakers have received death threats and been the victims of vandalism because of their votes in favor of the health care bill.
That’s the point George, that’s the facts.

Actually as a pro choice democrat I have been following the Stupak position and it has been entirely consistent. He was wrong before, the health care bill always required compliance with the Hyde amendment, and he was right when he crossed the line and admitted that it did have to comply with Hyde. I don’t like the Hyde amendment, but it is and always has been the law of the land, since it passed.
The real question is why should a woman be disadvantaged by having a legal medical procedure denied them by a modifying amendment.

SteveF – I don’t know what Stupak believes about abortion. I do know what his constituents believe about it as witnessed by Stupak’s pitch to them since 1993. As most of the nation knows, he defected from what he represented himself to be. And he did that after some weeks of what he told the nation was a principled stand to oppose the Senate version of Obamacare which is now the law of the land. This is for what I am taking him to task, and I expand it as an exemplar of what we so often see from politicians.
The “real question”, as you put it, is not the one I made the subject of this post, although it is a valid and important question in its own right to discuss.

Hey Mr. Hobert. Maybe you can post and provide something to counter my boring posts. Is the some part of my last post that is not factual?

Mr. Hobert, is this boring or is this an issue to be concerned about?
Seems unrest over passing (by majority vote of our elected representative)federal health care legislation has turned to vandalism and threats, with bricks hurled through Democrats’ windows, a propane line cut at the home of a congressman’s brother and menacing phone messages left for lawmakers who supported the bill.
The FBI is investigating the instances, which include shattered windows at four Democratic offices in New York, Arizona and Kansas. At least 10 members of Congress have reported some sort of threat as of Wednesday, and no arrests have been made.
You bet, this is boring and does not warrant mention.

SteveE – If I may step in here. The threats and vandalism against the Democratic lawmakers are as they are and are a matter of fact. I know of no one who condones them. Most certainly I do not, and I think they weaken the conservative cause.
Yes, there are many issues “to be concerned about” that I don’t cover in this post. Your somehow relating them to my criticism of Stupak and attempting to equate the two is juvenile, transparent, distracting, and generally boring to readers who understand my point (whether they agree with it or not), and recognize the extended agenda that your efforts wear on the local media, and especially on this blog.

The Hyde amendment is quite simple – no tax payer money pays for elective abortion. (there are exceptions) It seems that under the new law, a woman with no job and no money will have health insurance that will pay for her elective abortion if she chooses a plan that does cover that procedure. Her policy will be paid for with money handed to her by the Feds. The Feds extract the money from my wallet by force. Obama says the Hyde amendment will be followed. What in the “executive order” is there to invalidate any of the above observations?

The passing of the new health laws shows that the progressives in office are damn good politicians (passing laws, tax increases, excessive penalties/fines, etc which 78% of the voters opposed). These politicians know that 98% of Americans will forget this immoral legislation once American Idol starts.
Their inability to do as they promise makes them spineless and lacking anything resembling integrity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdKmc9aBELM).
