TownhallMtg When the schools no longer teach, you can feed their ‘graduates’ any garbage you want; they have no means to tell the difference.  The American townhall meeting is a piece of history still alive in a few places, but now totally distorted into national political theater.  A townhall meeting was where local people met to discuss local issues and candidates, and make local decisions.  In such meetings the low and the high of the community could stand up and make themselves heard equally on the matter at hand.  Such meetings usually ended in a vote being taken to resolve some issue – grassroots democracy.

A townhall meeting distinguished itself from a speech or a circuit lecture by an outsider – politician, academic, entertainer – which may or not have involved a Q&A.  Such gatherings were more controlled and tightly staged.  No one in the past would have mistaken them for a town hall meeting.

Today our political betters are squeezing out the last drops of historical democracy from the townhall label as they spread across the nation to hold these theatrical plays where the fare served is usually pure fiction or outright lies.  In spite of this, it is heartening to see some of these meetings get out of hand when the politico-in-charge doesn’t control the audience and their questions.

The people at these meetings who still have the gumption to question and disagree are then called mobs, rabble, and paid lackeys of corporate special interests.  Our MSM requires no evidence to pass on as news such assessments from the producers of these townhall theaters.

ObamaLies As an example of the disrepute we hold our political leaders at all levels, in the latest poll/study just published, over 72 percent of Americans believe Obama lied and will raise taxes on the middle class.  And this is just one lie out of an outpouring legion.  Yes indeed, it’s gonna take a lot of them ‘townhall’ meetings to get the lipstick right on this heard of pigs coming out of Washington.

Please watch this interview with the town-hall-protestor du jour. Things of which she cheerfully admits being profoundly ignorant: health care, Russia, socialism, taxes, politics, economics, her own family’s economic situation, the Constitution, the difference between a tax-exempt HSA and a “deductible,” what constitutes health care “choice,” ANY pending health care legislation whatsoever. For some reason she is compelled to present an emotionally overwrought, wholly incomprehensible opinion on ALL OF THE ABOVE in a public forum meant to address specific legislation. Rockwellian this is not, unless one imagines the citizen in the painting gathering his breath to deliver a spittle-flecked demand for the president’s birth certificate. This pliant and proudly unaware woman, a female as conceived by the Taliban, is the current face of inchoate Republican despair. Equal parts fear with no name (or all names – Russians, Nazis, Death Panels, Modernity, Robots, Taxes, Barack Hussein Obama, Mexicans, especially Spanish-Mexicans, Canadians, especially French-Canadians, HELOCs) and unselfconscious reversals on everything from “faith in the government” to deficits to end-of-life decisions. Those who, not more than a year ago, lauded end-of-life counseling (Newt Gingrich) or proudly signed such into law (Sarah Palin) or professed utmost concern that the full weight of the United States government obtrude upon the medical decisions of Terry Schiavo, her family, and her doctors (the rest of the Republican party), now mutter openly dialogues filched from Logan’s Run, Eraserhead, and Red Dawn in reference to same. Presumably, the purpose and work of Sarah Palin’s feverishly fancied “Death Panels” would be quite unobjectionable were these to be privatized as a cost-plus contract for Halliburton or Cigna.
(BTW, interesting that you would use a propaganda painting inspired by an FDR speech, George)

Wade, I would strongly disagree with your assessment of this clip. She was a typical tax paying hard working soccer mom who was attacked by Mr. Talking head and I thought she won the debate. I heard her call for a return to constitutional values and “choice” (liberty?). BTW, she was correct about Obama’s quote about single payer healthcare which Mr. talking head called her a liar for ha ha ha ha Mr. talking head is a jerk – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpAyan1fXCE

Liberals don’t understand the tea party or town hall shouters because liberals don’t value liberty.

    Henry –
I understand she’s supposed to be “hard-working” though how do we know this? Her husband takes of the bills and stuff. Maybe she isn’t hard-working. I’m not sure how to divine that from the clip. What do you think she means by a “return to Constitutional values?” I think she means “not Russia” like she said, although I think her understanding of that extends to meaning “not bad.” Does she understand New Russian gangster/crony capitalism? Not likely. This is kind of like “Nazis are bad,” another thing I have learned from the “town-hall shouters.” Mr. Mean News Guy is, I think, remarkably restrained given her inability to articulate anything remotely incoherent. If you have some insight, I’d be interested in hearing it. Does she want her parents not to go on Medicare? Is Social Security bad? Why does she say she had “faith in the government?” Even presuming she means when Republicans were in control, isn’t that sort of right-wing/libertarian/Randian heresy?
Please enlighten. So far I have: Nazi/Communism (these are now indistinguishable because neither O’Reilly nor Glenn Beck can bother) is bad. Killing old people with death panels is bad. Taxes are bad. –SOMETHING– ergo, health care reform is bad. ???
