JWilliams Juan Williams of NPR surprised the living *#%@ out of me last night not once, but TWICE!  First, that Bill O’Reilly chose this dignified and sober liberal journalist to guest host his show.  And second, that Juan immediately launched into a relentless pursuit of a truth, the discovery of which would be clearly embarrassing to Team Obama and the Democrats.  Candidate Obama took McCain to task and promised numerous times that his programs (specifically for climate change and health care) would not raise taxes on any family earning under $250K a year.  Writhing on the spit, he mercilessly questioned Bill Burton, Deputy White House Press Secretary, about this promise and had the poor weenie sputtering into the mike.  It now turns out that Barack Obama was lying through his teeth, so Burton wouldn’t answer the question.  But in the final moment he thought to rescue himself with a real whopper, President Obama “has brought about the biggest tax decrease in history with the passage of (ARRA).”  Wow!  I must confess, I have to re-evaluate my entire take on ol’ Juan.  This man may yet rescue journalism single-handedly.  (BTW, does anyone know of any liberal show which has had a conservative guest host?)

First General Electric and now Wal-Mart, all of our big corporations are beginning to see the benefits of government run social and green programs.  Kinda takes you back to the days when old Europe became Old Europe.  Wal-Mart’s jumping on board the ObamaCare bandwagon is just another case of what I have modestly dubbed Rebane’s First Law of Capitalism – The bad thing about capitalism is that it will always seek to game the system; the good thing about capitalism is that it will always seek to game the system.

The big corporations are quickly realizing that the major impact of Obama’s socialism will be to punish the country’s small businesses and start-ups.  These new government programs continue to build up the barriers to entry, and hence, competition to the established giants who might get knocked down a notch or two or even made to go the way of dinosaurs by some spunky small fry.  How do you think the Siemens, Thomsons, and Krupps of Europe got that way, and why is it so difficult for European businesses to grow from small to large?  They have no Microsoft, Intel, Oracle, or Wal-Mart stories to tell.  Twenty years from now, will we?

Federalization of America is advancing on all fronts – the Tenth Amendment has become an atrophied appendage to our Constitution.  The latest insult quietly going through Congress now is the disguised Clean Water Restoration Act (S787) – it is up for a hearing today (video).  If this becomes law, then the feds will regulate EVERY body of surface water in the country – public or private – that is standing, flowing, or subject to intermittent runoffs.  You will have to get a permit to do anything on your land that may affect the water, even if you want to drain a ditch.  And soon, to the required permits will be added maintenance and monitoring fees, and, of course, expanded staffs to inspect, test, and enforce.  (Not in America?)

Isn’t it wonderful what our new controlling party is doing? I mean they are coming at us from every direction. If the right one don’t get ya, the left one will.
The new clean water act will remove the word “navigable”, a pesky little word. A simple word, but it limits their reach to waters that you can take a boat up or down. Take the word out and you can control everything that is associated with water. Waters of the US.
“Power to the Government” instead of “Power to the people”.
This will be a Government for SOME people by a select few people. Oh, and paid for by everyone, more for some, less for others.
It is almost too much to keep track of. But then maybe they want it that way for now, so all of this can happen quickly before you figure it out.

I do agree John, it is all of a piece – the rush to conquer before the opposition can figure out what is happening. The military figured this process out and formalized it as “getting inside the enemy’s decision cycle”, a concept discovered and first proposed by John Boyd (brilliant tactician and fighter pilot) in the 70s. And their plan will work, unless we get our heads out of where the sun don’t shine.

The OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act) is an information strategy concept for information warfare developed by Colonel John Boyd (1927-1997). Although the OODA model was clearly created for military purposes, elements of the same theory can also be applied to business strategy. Boyd developed the theory based on his earlier experience as a fighter pilot and work on energy maneuverability. He initially used it to explain victory in air-to-air combat, but in the last years of his career he expanded his OODA loop theory into a grand strategy that would defeat an enemy strategically by “psychological” paralysis.
Boyd emphasized that strategy should always revolve around changing the enemy’s behavior, not annihilating his forces. The parallel between Boyd’s ideas and Sun Tzu’s masterpiece, “The Art of War,” are obvious. Both Boyd and Sun Tzu advocate the ideas of harmony, deception, swiftness and fluidity of action, surprise, shock, and attacking the enemy’s strategy.
Colonel Boyd viewed the enemy (and ourselves) as a system that is acting through a decision making process based on observations of the world around it. The enemy will observe unfolding circumstances and gather outside information in order to orient the system to perceived threats. Boyd states that the orientation phase of the loop is the most important step, because if the enemy perceives the wrong threats, or misunderstands what is happening in the environment around him, then he will orient his thinking (and forces) in wrong directions and ultimately make incorrect decisions. Boyd said that this cycle of decision-making could operate at different speeds for the enemy and your own organization. The goal should be to to complete your OODA loop process at a faster tempo than the enemy’s, and to take action to lengthen the enemy’s loop. One tries to conduct many more loops “inside” the enemies OODA loop, causing the enemy to be unable to react to anything that is happening to him.
Colonel Boyd stated that the the enemy’s OODA loop can be lengthened through a variety of means. Boyd’s aim is to generate “non-cooperate” centers of gravity for the enemy through ambiguity, deception, novel circumstances, fast transient maneuvers, and the use of Sun-Tzu’s idea of Cheng and Ch’i. By isolating the enemy’s centers of gravity and developing mistrust and cohesion within the system (making them “non-cooperative”), friction will be greatly increased, paralysis in the system will set in, and the enemy will ultimately collapse. By attacking the thought process of the enemy / competitor, his morale and decision process can be shattered.

OK folks, now that we know what needs to be done, let’s do some action planning.

Great comment (essay?) Russ. Now that you know some of the depth and fame of Boyd’s strategy, you might want to spend some fascinating hours curled up with the page-turner biography by Robert Coram – Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War. All US combat and war gaming systems designed and fielded since Boyd’s theories became known in the Pentagon are based on the OODA concept. Powerful stuff. (BTW, in his day Boyd was also the top gun of the Top Guns in the Air Force. No one could out dogfight him. The best of the best who went against him lasted an average of about twenty seconds before he was on their six, and game over. Great read.)
