There is a bill (HR808) before Congress to create a cabinet level Department of Peace (DOP).
The movement to expand the Executive Branch in this direction is quietly gathering steam among the country’s progressives. Their social theoretician is a Howard Rosenberg, a journalist and social critic who appears to be a cartoon of the progressive left-winger. His essay – ‘A Strategy for the Dept. of Peace to Enhance National Security’ – could not be improved upon by the writers of Saturday Night Live. A snippet –
Within this strategy, the role of The Peace Alliance/Department of Peace will be the "systems architect" and facilitator to establish a self-organizing network of capabilities (nonviolent conflict resolution, micro-finance, business, environmental stewardship, truth and justice, women and children's rights, healthcare rights, etc.) focused on peacebuilding by strengthening the capacity for civil society throughout the world. The idea is that, while virtually all the "raw" capabilities exist to do this, the management challenge is how do we orchestrate various organizations (NGOs, businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, military, police, healthcare, etc.) to holistically come together, share a common vision, work as a team, and build the capacity for a strong and vibrant civil society, while respecting diverse cultural perspectives.
In this he also gives away that the progenitor outfit, The Peace Alliance, will have more than a cozy relationship – a la ACORN? – with the new DOP.
Rosenberg’s understanding of history is starkly revealed in this piece. For example he cites, as our past successes in forging this kind of peace building in nations, the rebuilding of Germany and Japan under the Marshall Plan and MacArthur’s benign dictatorship. He believes we can attract the bad guys on today’s geo-political stage to play nice without first having to go through a little inconvenient tussle. Somehow the role of World War II in making Germany and Japan more compliant to the kind of nation (re)building we imposed on them seems to have eluded him.
Other examples of his naïveté could and, no doubt, will be assembled. But for now, and as a minimum, the gentleman has every right to demand a full tuition refund from the University of Oklahoma for his degree in history – they screwed him, pure and simple.
After some reflection, I wonder what has been and will then be the role of our State Department. Have they not also been charged to promote, nay, achieve our national interests on the world scene through peaceful diplomacy? The Peace Alliance seems to be ignorant of this as witnessed by their silence about this begging question.
Also, I wonder if this will be the cabinet level organization that will run Obama’s proposed Civilian National Security Force – perhaps called the Peace Police with uniforms to match – to enforce (“orchestrate”?) all the new federal laws that will enable DOP’s domestic agenda of peace. Check out this on HR675. (I wonder how they pronounce DOP?? … Nah!)
And finally, in our little town of Grass Valley, the DOPs are going to have their own parade on, catch this, the second of July. This is two days before the town holds the traditional 4th of July parade. If DOP is such a good all-American idea, in addition to proposing a humongous expansion of government (the theme du jour), why aren’t they marching with everyone else in the big parade? Here is the piece that appeared in our local Union, which is probably similar to something that was written for your local paper.
It really staggers the imagination that all this is going on in the presence of news reports from NKorea, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Russia, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, … , all in response to recent performances of President Barack ‘Peace in Our Time’ Obama’s concerto for genuflected knee and orchestra. Where do these people come up with this crap?!
One that Chairman Mao got right – ‘All power grows out of the barrel of a gun.’
Rebane's Corollary – 'The might of the pen rests solely in its ability to arouse the sword.'
