Lance Armstrong came out of retirement this afternoon to win the 49th Nevada City Classic while being cheered by a town packed with about 20,000 fans. It was a wonderful event in a wonderful setting. But then Nevada City is my home town, and I am unabashedly biased.
Jo Ann and I went to see the race with our neighbor Jim. His lovely wife (Saint) Mary took us into town without camping chairs (Jim’s fault), and then came back with the chairs when Jim called her just about the time she got back home. The chairs were delivered forthwith and with good cheer. Upon special dispensation and skipping beatification, her sanctification was rushed through, completed, and bestowed when she again came to pick us up after the races, having spent the interval caring for the sick and wounded.
It was a great day to sit on the sidewalk and cheer the athletes as they went streaming by. Armstrong showed everyone why at 37 he still is a champion. Good luck to him this year in France.
