*** Putin moves, Bush muddles …
*** … thundering herd of lemmings heading for climate change cliff …
*** Victor Davis Hanson, a quiet voice of reason

T80u20firing20in20midair1 *** When he heard about the Russian tanks coming through the Roki Tunnel, Bush should have been on AF-1 within the hour heading back to the White House (or Tiblisi?).  Instead he hung around the Olympics soaking up photo ops with his arms draped around various athletes.  That act itself sent a clear message to Putin, Hu Jintao, Bin Laden, … .  Every pundit in the world now has three opinions as to what will happen.  And as we fondly look back on 2008, we will remember that day in August when the world again changed.

*** New Jersey legislator urges his state to pull out of the thundering herd of lemmings heading for the climate change cliff.  More on NC Media Watch and here.

*** Through the cacophony.  The other day our beloved Onion published a column, ‘Brave Old World’ (also here), by Victor Davis Hanson that to these eyes was the epitome of quiet reason about Hanson_victordavis_biophoto1_2 what is happening in our world.  Hanson is a man with the credentials any left-wing liberal should admire, yet how he sees the world is almost diametrically opposite from what our socialist compatriots observe –literally they seem to be looking at two different planets.  Readers of these Ruminations will correctly conclude the core commonality of our two perspectives.  I invite you to find out more about this learned man and political essayist at his website and his Wikipedia entry.

Hanson also sees the world heading back to the international tensions of the 1930s as the US begins to relinquish its role as the world’s good cop on the beat.  But the future is never exactly the same as the past, and our future has some important differences which will not bode well for us under the forthcoming messianic leadership that this country seems about to embrace.

George, thanks for sharing Victor’s thoughts. He wrote the following on April 10 2008: “It is politically incorrect to say so, but an oil well in Alaska might cause less damage to the world environment, less strain on our own food supply and more savings to poorer American consumers than most of the present alternatives.”

Victor Davis Hanson (AKA George Rebane),
Glad you caught up with the “news” that the award-winning local newspaper added Hanson (months ago) as a regular to the Opinion page. He adds a little more depth to conservative dialogue than Rush Limbaugh, don’t you think? Ha!

I have always enjoyed Victor Davis Hanson and have posted links to his writings on my blog many times, long before the Union added him to the editorial page. I had suggested to the previous editor at the Union that they employee VDH as a regular contributor, but my suggestion was rejected. So I was pleased to recently find VDH’s rational thinking in the Union. Good job Jeff! Lets have more writers like VDH on the Union’s editorial page.

According to the newspaper’s own search engine, the earliest VDH article is dated 27 June 2008, less than two months ago. I suppose it took a little time to assess that this was not a flash-in-the-pan addition. A tip of the hat to JeffP.

    No it was March:
    From a column March 29
On the Opinion Page, we introduced a new conservative columnist, Victor Davis Hanson. Hanson lives in California, rare among national political columnists, and is a historian and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford. Once a full-time farmer, he now lives on a farm near Fresno.
“Really glad to see Hanson in the paper,” one reader said. “A thinking person’s conservative, unlike the Ann Coulters, Sean Hannitys, etc., of the world.”
We’ll still run Michael Reagan’s column, but not on a weekly basis. Instead, we’re publishing a column by Floyd and Mary Beth Brown, founders of a conservative citizen’s action group and the ones who oversaw the building of the $20 million Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara.

Thanks for the clarification Jeff. I still have to stand by what your search engine reveals – the first published VDH article shows up 27 June 2008. I suppose mentioning him in one of your March editorials does at least count for leaning forward in the saddle a little. We all began holding our breath in March, but had to let out some of it when nothing happened for three months. Then it took a little longer to re-establish the reality. In any event, thank you.

George, I did the same search you did and turned up this, from April:

    George,
My real-time comment suddenly disappeaed from your Web site, but I searched just what you did and came up with this article from VDH, from April:

Got it Jeff. Apparently the summary of article titles in the search results don’t all have ‘Victor Davis Hanson’ in them as do the later ones. That clears it up the April article. Thanks much.
